25.01.2022 Doubling of Medicare sessions I'm pleased to see as part of the Federal Budget tonight, that the government has doubled the number of Medicare psychologist sessions to 20 a year. https://www.psychology.org.au//Media-r/2020/Budget-2020-21

24.01.2022 Vale: Ruth Bader Ginsburg. This morning I awoke to read of the sad news of passing of the American Supreme Court Justice the iconic RGB. https://www.abc.net.au//ruth-bader-ginsburg-notor/11256624... I have previously written about the documentary RGB (see the trailer https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=biIRlcQqmOc ) and the docudrama of her life "On the Basis of Sex" (see the film's trailer here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=28dHbIR_NB4 ) In addition to the films there are also various books, including this one, being a collection of her own writing in the form of speeches and other writings: https://encore.slwa.wa.gov.au/iii/encore/record/C__Rb5229599 The passing of RGB: A major loss to humanity, may she rest in peace.

24.01.2022 A recent look at some of my business statistics showed something that surprised me. Namely that based on a recent cursory look at my records, it looks like about 70% of my clients are men. Perhaps not so surprising, considering that blokes often report to me they like the idea of speaking with another bloke, for dealing with personal issues. Also that the psychology profession (world-wide) is dominated by women. In WA we have 3989 psychologists, (according to AHPRA the regi...Continue reading

24.01.2022 HUNTINGDALE LITTLE FREE LIBRARY - First anniversary. I recently received a reminder that The Little Free Library is now a year old. By way of reminder, the following is an edited and slightly modified excerpt of the original posting.... I created the Huntingdale Little Free Library in the waiting area outside my office at 7 Bronzewing Street Huntingdale. I have been inspired by the many and various tales about other Little Free Libraries across the world on the organization’s website. (SEE: www.littefreelibrary.org ) In my case I see it’s a way to share books that might be of use to others, without obligation. It is accessible any time either I’m there, or the Pathology Lab collection office is open (basically in the mornings) with Friday’s being my Client free day. How did this come about? Well when working with clients I will often recommend books that may be of assistance with the issues we are dealing with. I thought some of the books on my office shelves (intended to loan to clients) deserve a broader readership. For example for someone dealing with Grief, I may recommend Ruth Cracknell’s Journey from Venice that I wrote about previously on this Facebook page. This is one of the books (that I purchased as a Library Discard) to add to the Little Free Libraries collection. I see this as a relatively low cost (to me) Community Service, which ties in with my interest in Community Psychology (see a definition of this below). 20.01.2022 A new resource from the APS: "Coping with change during COVID-19: COMING TO TERMS WITH THE 'NEW NORMAL' " Available from the front page of the webpage at: www.colinlongworth.com.au

19.01.2022 On this day in 1968 another tragic event happened in the United States - Robert F. Kennedy was shot. I was reminded of this today when listening to Peter Waltham on Curtin Radio. An interesting wikipedia post about the film, talking about how it mixes original film with recreated scenes, along with other aspects of the film, can be found here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bobby_(2006_film) I thought of how it's impact, was depicted in the 2006 film "Bobby". The IMDB descript...ion notes: "The story of the assassination of U.S. Senator Robert F. Kennedy, who was shot in the early morning hours of June 5, 1968 in the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles, California, and twenty-two people in the hotel, whose lives were never the same." https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0308055/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1 The film had a "Who's Who" of Holywood royalty depicting the 22 people in the hotel impacted by the death (apart from the broader U.S. population and it's ripples across the world). I'm reminded how (on that day) coming back in the family car, from a "Cubalee" (i.e. a "Cubs" get-together, i.e. junior Boy Scouts) through the city streets, asking my Father why all the churches in the city were being rung at night? I don't remember exactly what he said, but he explained how there had been an assassination in the U.S. The film soundtrack includes some stirring recordings of things said at the time, including at his funeral, (by his brother) apart from more general music of the times. Worth watching again if you'e not seen it before - no doubt on various streaming services, apart from anywhere else.

19.01.2022 New signage for the Huntingdale office, after creation and fitting by Signarama Canning Vale.

12.01.2022 More photos from the Huntingdale and surrounds series. In this case taken during my post-lunch park walk on Thursday at Forest Reserve, near Forrest Lakes Shopping Centre

09.01.2022 Huntingdale area photos - And helping "see the wood for the trees" The other day, I was enjoying a late morning coffee in a local park, before starting a full afternoon and evening of consultations. While enjoying the quiet (apart from a few buzzing bees) I got to thinking about how a few clients have said how they find it useful to talk (in a confidential setting) with someone ä few steps removed" from their own lives. As always, bookings can be made and available vacancies can be seen via https://healthengine.com.au//huntingdale-psychology/s47743 or www.colinlongworth.com.au

09.01.2022 More Huntingdale area photos - these taken during a mid-week coffee break walk around Waterperry Drive Reserve.

08.01.2022 The Little book of Resilience by Matthew Johnstone. After a session with a client I was reminded of this book on my bookshelf from Matthew Johnstone (see www.matthewjohnstone.com.au to purchase a copy) also available in a few libraries. As it says on the WA Libraries online catalogue "Most of us set out quietly hoping for, and secretly expecting, to live a happy, successful and healthy life. But life doesn't always go to plan. The Big Little Book of Resilience is about developing flexibility, acceptance and self-compassion when those plans go awry." SEE: https://encore.slwa.wa.gov.au/iii/encore/record/C__Rb4093864

07.01.2022 An interesting article with observations from a range of countries from the American Psychological Association about Resilience and inspiration in these COVID-19 times. https://www.apa.org/intern/global-insights/stories-pandemic#

07.01.2022 Cannabis, Weed, Marijuana Cones - Whatever you call it, this should be a warning sign to any user. A bit like smoking cigarettes, never too late to quit. For those wanting assistance to give up, I may be able to assist (not an uncommon issue to come up with clients). ... Bookings can be made either (Mon-Fri 8am-5pm) via my booking office on 1300 50 67 68, or 24/7 via the HealthEngine links on my website. As with other consultations can be covered by a Medicare referral from your GP, to get subsidised sessions.

06.01.2022 An interesting article about the part music can play in our lives. Reminds me to look at my list of "Happy" songs I've compiled, as well as "Colin's Suggestions for Relaxation Music" on the Resources page (https://www.colinlongworth.com.au/resources) of my website.

06.01.2022 An interesting reminder, in light of recent posts on this page about Parks etc near the office.

04.01.2022 A few more photos from near the Huntingdale office. In this case near the Forrest lakes Shopping Centre

04.01.2022 Ruth Avenue Reserve in Canning Vale: Another (sort of) local park as a place to go to relax and reflect. A continuation of the series of photos from the Huntingdale (and nearby) areas.

03.01.2022 Celebrating WA day? For a look at how WA has been depicted on film, you might like to have a look at some of these, either via youtube or a streaming service. "Wasted on the young" (2011) with a number of WAAPA graduates/students, with as I recall it no-one on screen who seems to be older than about 25, with the way it's shot it could be anywhere, but you can look out for the scenes shot in the ECU library as well as elsewhere, around Perth. See https://www.imdb.com/title/tt...1647483/?ref_=rvi_tt) "These Final Hours" (2013 A different look at the suburbs of Perth see: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt2268458/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1 ) "Nickel Queen" (1971 - available to watch on Youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U2lyjzNn0Lg&t=238s complete with John Laws as the "love Interest" for more info see: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0125948/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0 "Rabbit Proof Fence" (2002 For more info see: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0252444/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1 ) "Last Train to Freo" (2006 A different trip to Freo, with a bit of a twist. See: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0848592/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0 ) For those suffering from COVID-19 Cabin Fever, remember Telehealth Psychology sessions are available. See www.colinlongworth.com.au/COVID-19 for info on bookings and other info, available appointment times can be seen via HealthEngine https://healthengine.com.au//per/mr-colin-longworth/p42011 Keep safe

02.01.2022 COVID-19 Lockdown - Telehealth only: See webpage https://www.colinlongworth.com.au/covid-19 for more info, as well as the main webpage and HealthEngine links

02.01.2022 Seeing this article on the ABC website, reminded me that although I'm based in Perth (Huntingdale, mainly) I can still provide Telehealth services for those in the country. Although like the psychologist's referred to in this article I have had an increase in clients in recent times, I can (currently) usually see clients either in person, or via Telehealth within a week or two. (As per my Telehealth webpage, I use appointment times for either an in person or Telehealth consultation.) Available appointments show up on HealthEngine (as per my website) till about an hour beforehand.
