17.01.2022 Seas of green in the vineyard. It’s just heavenly. Canopy is to the ground already, fruit set is complete and there is plenty of it. Perfect pea-sized grapes in the Chardonnay and Pinot, shotgun pellet sized in the Shiraz. It’s an endless cycle of slashing and spraying at the moment. ... We’ve probably had more rain than is ideal already and the threat of disease is building, but we can handle it, and honestly, we can’t be anything other than happy for the long term health of the vines and the soil.

13.01.2022 I have never seen these 50+ year old vines so happy. The result of 3 years of increased inputs and focus on soil and vine health plus a season of glorious spectacular rain. It’s a long and winding road to bring these grapes home to the winery this autumn, but right now, as flowering is underway across the Chardonnay and Shiraz we couldn’t be happier. Keep those fingers crossed for us.

11.01.2022 Cover crop got another slash today - the cuttings are thrown sideways under the vine to create a decent mulch. Can’t believe how good the vineyard is looking. What a season, and most of all, what a team! Thanks so much to Paul, Paul and Ben. So much work has gone into this over the last few years.

11.01.2022 Tomorrow we’re excited to plant our new Shiraz Block (2B) in absolutely perfect conditions. A sunny but cool day, a full soil moisture profile, loved-up fertilised soil, with an established cover crop boosting organic matter and out-competing weeds. Feeling very positive and proud to be investing in our future. Our odds of success are in stark contrast to our 2019 endeavours - planting Grenache and Chardonnay in what seemed like sand over concrete in scorching heat. We’ve had to replant around 70% of the 2019 Grenache block, and 2-budded the 2019 Chardonnay - even though they made a valiant effort and grew well over the cordon wire, the trunks were not strong enough due to the season, so we cut them right back to the ground to make sure they grow healthily for the future.
