16.01.2022 "Don't break cover girls. DO NOT. Break. Cover"..... Who doesn't have a chook or 20? I'd hazard a guess, there are many 2nd hand commercial layers living out t...heir days on a farm after spending their first 18 months doing what they do best, providing those glorious bum nuts/ cackle berries, in a most productive and efficient manner. Such is societies demand for cheap food though, once the girls efficiency wanes ever so slightly, the next generation moves in. But those older girls, if you can access some, certainly make brilliant farm yard layers. Unfortunately, the wedge tail eagles (who featured in a post last week) think the chooks are quite brilliant too and so the battle of wits commences. Unfortunately chooks are not renown for wits. The free range life is one the girls would never be denied here, but realistically, it is not the utopian lifestyle of uninterrupted carefree, stressfree living one would like to provide them. Instinct does instruct the girls to take cover when a shadow of winged death glides overhead but it would appear a chooks concentration span does not always extend for the required length of time. And so, despite checking on them while the eagles were cruising, searching, spying and despite feeling somewhat relieved the girls had all found cover, the evening count told the story.
