24.01.2022 The Restraining Orders Act has been modified extensively. WA now has Family Violence Orders and Violence Orders for those not in a family relationship. We retained the Misconduct Restraining Orders. Alternatives such as behaviour orders are also available in the new Act that were not available previously. The changes are to make respondents more accountable and to change some of the procedures for on-going breaches as well as providing remedies when Applicants encourage breaches.

16.01.2022 This video does a couple of things - Firstly, it shows that Australia is taking a sensible approach to gun laws. The region between citizen's rights and community safety is a narrow one and we can take some pride in our navigation of that "thin line" of the law. Secondly, it provides a warning to all of us that community safety concerns 'go out the window' when Legislators let special interest groups usurp their obligations and responsibilities to pass fair, just and equitab...le laws, not just laws that suit big businesses and corporate demands. When we work in the USA, we notice how, more and more, the police are becoming indistinguishable from the military. This was never the intention of Sir Robert Peel who wanted police to be 'with' and 'for' the community, not a separate branch of the government to be feared and avoided. Gerard provides workshops on social issues for lawyers, article clerks, Court users, law students and other community members from across Western Australia. At Notre Dame and other universities across Australia he has taught Legal Research and Writing, Mental Health and the Law and Effective Problem Based teaching strategies for legal/justice professors and lecturers. Gerard has a professional background as a former secondary school principal and education consultant. He continues to teach staff at schools, universities, colleges and police agencies from across the world to use problem-based methodologies in training environments. His own classes are taught using a real-life, problem solving methodology rather than a lecture format. In North America, Gerard serves as the co-chair of the Police Society for Problem Based Learning, an international non-profit society. For the eight years he served as the President of that society.
