20.01.2022 Cheers @winereview_simple we are on last stocks too!! Perfect wine for these warm summer nights! #Repost @winereview_simple with @make_repost Hutton Vale ... Eden Valley Riesling 2019 Rating: A- Price: $35 Recommendation: Buy. Full flavour with a touch of sweetness that creates an overall luscious feel. Completely different from most Rieslings. It feel luxurious with an impressive length. A lot of reviews outline a lemon lime character but I tasted a focus of apricot with a creamy texture. Beautiful...simple... On a side note do you ever find it hard to pair a wine with spicier food, like a curry or even Italian sausage or even some spicier salamis? Well this is it. Perfect for that Thai BYO. This is built for a curry. I paired it with an spicy Italian sausage pizza and it was a brilliant combination. #riesling #edenvalley #australia Chilli Mud Crab A very good wine and worth the price 5+ but beautiful now You may have noticed I have added ‘in paid partnership’ above the post and photo. I did not get paid to post about this wine. This wine was complimentary from @huttonvalefarm winery and @kkriven_consulting This is me being open and transparent. I have always outlined in my posts if the wine was complimentary, but some people are saying Instagram now requires the tagging of related partnerships whether it is free or a paid endorsement. IG now outlines getting free products is the same as being paid in their terms and conditions. Receiving complimentary or free wine does not impact my review. It is a requirement before I post about any wine that it must reach a score a minimum of C and most importantly want to recommend it to my audience. . . . . . #australianwine #australiawine #barossawine #barossavalley #barossa #edenvalley #southaustralia #wine #winecellar #winepic #winephotography #winephoto #igerswine #instawine #riesling #rieslingwine #whitewine #whitewineemoji #sundaywine #cheers #endoftheday #winetime #huttonvalefarm #wineaccounttofollow #winereview #winemerchant @katekriven

20.01.2022 10am Sunday 25th October 2020 Barossa Valley, South Australia Morning folks, and I’ve had a few messages over the last couple of days, asking for details of any... events that I’m doing, so here we go! I’m heading for NSW next week - first aeroplane ride for the year when normally I’ve logged about 60 flights! - and I’ll be the one with the masks, gloves, sanitiser pump pack, dettol wipes and packed lunch. You can never be too careful with this jolly virus! I’ve put a few details for each event, as well as who to contact if you’d like to come along. If these go well, then I’ll be talking to some folks that I know across the country, and we’ll try and spread a bit of laughter and wine about as we hurtle towards the Festive Season for what has been a jolly tough year for a huge amount of people! Friday 23rd October Thanks a million to the Sailmaster Tavern - that’s you Tony Mac & Kevin B, S Smith & Son Adelaide - Steve Haley, and Yalumba for a truly great day out on the deck! The Sailmaster does four wine lunches a year, and I think I’m going to be back doing one in the new year. Keep an eye on their ‘what’s on’ page, or ask for Tony McMahon with respect to when that next wine day on the deck is. Wednesday 28th October Wine Dinner with the fabulous Fiona Nairn at The Caledonian Hotel, North Adelaide, featuring the wines from Yalumba - thanks to Kate Wigan and S Smith & Son Adelaide. Two Covid compliant rooms are running that night, so I’m going to be busy doing wine chat and stories between them both. Not as bad as the night in Perth though, when I was double booked to two sold out events, and had to drive between the two! Not sure if there are any tickets left, best thing would be to contact the Caledonian direct. Their chef is red hot, and this is always one of the best wine events in Adelaide each year. Thursday 29th October Jumping on a jet plane to Sydney, then the train down to Wollongong for a very big wine night out with the Steelers Club - the Illawarra home of the St George Illawarra Dragins rugby league club. We’re launching their brand new wine club with a fizz and a big red bang......it’s going to be called the ‘Steelers Fine Beverage Association’, and should be an absolute hoot of a night out. For tickets, please contact Matt at [email protected] And yes, all the stories are coming out - meeting Hugh Grant in London, backstage with U2, embarrassing moment meeting the captain of the Calgary Flames......and lots of entertaining wine educational chat. Friday 30th October Private event - can’t say much, but it will be a memorable ‘claret’ feature on the day.......with the Penfolds 2010 Bin 389 ‘Baby Grange’ and the Yalumba 2012 The Caley ‘super claret’ in the wine set. And yes, I’ll be posting reviews. Saturday 31st October On Halloween Eve I’ll be doing a new event with Hutton Vale Farm - their ‘Cellar Gems’ dinner. It’s going to be a jam packed wine bill with the Hutton Vale new releases - including their stellar 2016 vintages of both the Shiraz and Grenache Mataro - and gems from their cellar......and some dusty old bottles dredged from my cellar representing my time with wine in the Barossa. Expect interesting things from Wolf Blass, Tollana, Rockford and Yalumba......plus some ‘recent yesteryear’ stories of the Barossa from 1983 - 1996. All paired with estate reared lamb - I think it’s going to be ‘spooky good’! **some tickets have just become available due to a cancellation - please contact Jan Angas at Hutton Vale Farm Wednesday 4th November **stay tuned** I might have an interesting chat lined up from the State Of Origin in Adelaide Friday 6th November I’m doing a ‘live’ and zoomed chat to various lunching locations in Clare for the Sevenhill SACWA Gals as part of their annual Long Lunch - proceeds to local charity. No pressure here - following on from last year’s Annabelle Crabb Q&A. This should be a blast, and there’s an aftershow at the Sevenhill pub for anyone that might be weekending up in the Clare Valley. Wednesday 18th November This is a hot ticket event, but you’ll need to be in Auckland NZ! I’m zooming in to the cool fashion gig of the year - the Geoskincare ‘What Women Want’ event and lunch at the Cordis Hotel ballroom, Auckland. Thanks a million to Vanessa Bennett and Multi Media Magazines for the gig......I’ll be zooming in to have a chat on what this particular woman wants......wearing my brand new, purpose purchased, very sharp, floral print.....blouse! See you when it’s on zoom Gals! Oh, and I’ve received the ‘La Belle Angele’ lunch wines in one piece - sent across the Tasman so that I wouldn’t miss out - thanks to Negociants NZ - Clive Weston and Andrew Parkinson. Saturday 28th November We’ll be doing the ‘Cellar Gems’ thing again with Hutton Vale, but as a springtime lunch - similar combination wine set, and a long grazing lunch lamb based menu. Please contact Jan Angas at Hutton Vale Farm for tickets December Going fishing on the Yorke Peninsula, and extracting honey (with any luck)

16.01.2022 Cheers @qwinereviews #Repost @qwinereviews with @make_repost Oh, this is a pleasure to drink. An off-dry Eden Valley Riesling @huttonvalefarm. Coming in at a lean 9% alcohol, this has Thai night written all over it. Admittedly, the day after tasting I had it with a Malaysian curry and it was a winner.... An energetic wine, Bickford's lime cordial, kaffir lime and lemon zest loom large. A dab of sweetness makes an appearance early before fresh citrus fruits and a minerally drive dazzle through the mouth with a cleansing and crisp acidity the ideal conclusion. Dry to finish, a chalky texture gives plenty to muse over. A fabulous drink 94pts See more

14.01.2022 It is truly amazing how the same small vineyard can deliver such differences between each vintage. Mother Nature really does dictate it! The 2016 Grenache Mataro is fruit driven with lots of raspberries notes, the 2017 GM showcases more of the earthy Mataro and the 2018 GM is somewhere in between! It’s a forever moving journey as the wines age and develop over the years, and these beauties are designed to stand the test of time! 06.01.2022 Both serious wine collectors and those of us who enjoy well made expressive wine that has both heritage and a sense of place should think seriously about acquir...ing at least a few bottles of the wines from Hutton Vale Farm. Here are some brief tasting notes on some of the current releases. Contact Jan, John, Stue or Caitlin; or follow this link: https://huttonvale.com/wines/ Hutton Vale Tasting Notes: July-August 2020 Overview The Angas family has been an important entity in the northern Barossa since the earliest pioneering days. Their legacy is significant Angaston carries their name and you can’t wander its streets without reading plaques on many churches, public buildings and parks honouring the generous bequests of patriarch George Fife Angas during the mid to late 19th Century. The family has also enjoyed a long connection with grape vines and vineyards. John Howard Angas (1823-1904) distributed cuttings from the Busby collection to other pioneering Barossa vignerons, including Samuel Smith at what was to become Yalumba. Henschke’s famed Mount Edelstone vineyard was planted by Ronald Angas in in 1912 and subsequently provided the cuttings for the Shiraz vineyard planted on Hutton Vale Farm by Colin Angas in the 1960s. As the family’s social contributions have been characterised by altruism and generous philanthropy, so their approach to the land, their stock and their vineyards has been defined by a great sense of respect for the environment and sensitivity to the seasonal flow of abundance or paucity. A survey of their own Hutton Vale Farm wines since the late 1980s reveals a reverence for a classical, traditional approach, largely uninfluenced by the fashions that have more recently thrown the spotlight on more extreme expressions of Barossa winemaking. The current range of Hutton Vale Farm wines are serious, classically proportioned and express the unique terroir of their own corner of the Barossa. Winemaking artefact plays little part in the finished wines. Pure fruited, unencumbered by obvious oak, they have the tannin structures to grow and unfurl in a cool cellar over several decades. However, even in their relative youth, they provide plenty of pleasure and deliciously enhance fine cuisine. A note about higher altitude Grenache: I had a Grenache epiphany nearly a decade ago after discovering the Comando G wines from high in the Sierra de Gredos mountains near Madrid in Spain. Remnant plantings of antediluvian vines in impoverished granite soils, lovingly brought back to low-yielding production. Surviving vineyards are planted at various sites at an astonishing 800 - 1,200m. The Comando G winemakers recognised that such sites could potentially produce wines with ethereal transparency, precision, poise and an ability to express site: qualities that might even challenge great Burgundian Pinot Noir. So impressed was I with the haunting beauty of the Sierra de Gredos wines, that I began to wonder why there were so few plantings of Grenache in the higher reaches of Eden Valley. Winemakers and grape growers I spoke to tended to dismiss the idea, suggesting that the grapes would struggle to ripen. But I often think that ‘ripe’ is as problematic a term as ‘natural’ within the world of wine. In a region like the Barossa, we possibly inherited a notion of what’s ‘ripe’ from our fortified winemaking forebears, especially where Grenache is concerned. Even table wines made from the variety, until recent times, were too often sweet-fruited, gloopy and confected. In the ten years since I asked those questions, many consumers have gravitated towards Pinot Noir, and Barossa winemakers have increasingly seen Grenache as the local varietal from which to make wines that will appeal to this growing savoury-elegance-precision-craving audience. Correspondingly, the notion of ‘ripeness’ has evolved; grapes are now usually picked earlier within the ripeness spectrum, when natural acidity can contribute a natural freshness and vitality to the finished wines. In 2020, Grenache from Eden Valley is represented across several highly regarded wines. An old vineyard in Springton, allegedly planted in 1858, is providing fruit for some celebrated local winemakers. And Stop Press! A single vineyard Eden Valley Grenache has just taken out the award for Australia’s top Grenache in the 2021 Halliday Wine Companion. The Hutton Vale Grenache block: 6.6 acres was planted back in 1972. This vineyard might not be planted at the same altitude as those in the Sierra de Gredos, but it remains significantly cooler through the ripening period than vineyards on the Barossa Valley floor. Significantly, about 10% of Hutton Vale’s Grenache vines failed in the first season. Replacement cuttings hastily acquired and planted turned out (serendipitously) to be Mataro. By picking and fermenting all grapes together, the vineyard itself steers both flavour and structure in the wine. 2016 Hutton Vale Farm Eden Valley Grenache Mataro The Hutton Vale Farm Grenache Mataro glows in the glass like the finest Myanmar Ruby. Heady aromas burst from beyond the rim of the glass: ripe raspberries, rose water and dried spice. On the palate there’s an inherent richness, but also purity; flavours are neither unruly nor clamorous. Rather, there’s a fineness, a line that runs from the front right to the back of the palate. Juicy ripe raspberries again dominate, but an undertow of savoury spice succeeds in pulling the fruit back into the depths of the wine, where it shares the limelight with persistent tangy acidity and sensual gentle tannin that you feel against the gums. The balance of acidity, tannin, oak and fruit suggests that the wine will enjoy a quiet evolution in bottle over at least a decade. I’m thinking duck, quail, pheasant or pigeon, roasted in the French manner, perhaps with sour cherries. Better still, dig out the ‘Duck with Olives’ recipe from ‘Lulu’s Provençal Table’, a selection a recipes from the matriarch of Domaine Tempier in Bandol, (now 102 years old) beautifully transcribed by Richard Olney. This dish would be a phenomenal match with this delicious Eden Valley Grenache Mataro. 2016 Hutton Vale Farm Eden Valley Cabernet Sauvignon Deep crimson in hue. Pure varietal perfume festoons the aromatic profile, together with brightly lit red fruit, winter herbs, bay leaf and tapenade. Oak is restrained, feathering the fruit-driven bouquet and enhancing the fruit and an undercurrent of earthy cellar dust. In the mouth, the wine is very classically proportioned, fruit driven and superbly shaped. As it opens up and warms in the glass, succulent damson plums, ripe mulberries, violets and black olive brine assert themselves, without a skerrick of stalky greenness. Flavours are focused and assertive, rich and lingering. Cabernet aficionados hankering for a burst of sensual tannin won’t be disappointed, yet the tannins, whilst prominent, remain talcy and aristocratic, in service to the flow of fruit rather than riding rough-shod all over it. Flavours linger in the mouth so beautifully, literally for more than a minute. I’d love to see this wine with a rustic pot-roasted lamb dish, with plenty of black olives, bay leaves and sprigs of thyme. 2016 Hutton Vale Farm Eden Valley Shiraz Mid crimson in colour. Initially closed and reticent on the nose, time in a decanter and some enthusiastic wrist work coax beautiful purity of fruit, unencumbered by the obvious oak that can swamp the detail of fruit in less sensitively wrought examples of Barossa Shiraz. Freshly cut satsumas and wild blackberries dominate the fruit spectrum and jostle in the glass with the scents of bruised sage leaves, tilled earth and cellar dust. Displaying power without weight (the Holy Grail for me) through the mouth, the wine is fine boned, elegant and precise. Intense and succulent blue fruits, plums and wild blackberries are layered beneath herbal notes - sage leaves and dried liquorice root. A gradual crescendo of fine chalky tannin builds as the wine traverses the tongue, peaking in a glorious climax of concentrated plum, tannic friction and mineral acidity at the cusp of the throat. Although best left for another decade, this Shiraz will provide plenty of pleasure in its youth if served with a juicy char-grilled porterhouse.

02.01.2022 Our Angaston village was so bustling & alive this past week! I can’t remember the last time it was so full of visitors and locals We were so exhausted that S...aturday night we had our first take away from @three75bar and last night all I could muster was ham and cheese on toast! My first choice for those nights when neither Matteo nor I have the energy to cook is scrambled eggs but Matteo had used over 70 @tathrahomestead eggs since Thursday so we were completely out . So tonight (Monday) we were lucky to find a beautiful boned leg of @huttonvalefarm lamb at our local butcher @barossasmokehousebutchers which I stuffed with @fentonfarmfresh garlic and lay on a bed of rosemary from the garden and a big brown onion cut into 4 with skin on, a few good glugs of olive oil and generous salt & pepper... served with oodles of veggies from Saturday’s @barossafarmersmarket . The table set with a crumpled (but clean) table cloth, conversation about everyone’s weekend and a glass of granache = everyone was happy including my beautiful parents (who take care of the bambini every weekend ).. If you are visiting the Barossa on a weekend make sure you pack an esky and fill it with produce for the week ahead or the freezer! Our butcher is open early in the morning and closes at midday on Saturday’s (closed Sunday’s).
