25.01.2022 The Hastings-Western Port Historical Society Committee and Members Congratulate the newly appointed Mornington Peninsula Shire Mayor, Despi O’Connor, and deputy mayor Sarah Race.

22.01.2022 The Hastings-Western Port Historical Society would like to thank Kate Roper for her time as Councillor and the great work she did. Kate’s interest in the local community and the many hours spent in helping and advising the Society is greatly acknowledged. At Kate’s suggestion we were successful in gaining the Placemaking Grant to enable the visual improvement of our museum and her valuable support was much appreciated by the Committee and members. As a resident of Crib Poi...nt I, (Dianne Maloney), think it looks wonderful and inviting with the beautification streetscape of the Crib Point Cellars and the small group of shops. Kate did an amazing job on the many projects that were completed, e.g the beautification of High Street and the Murals in the laneways. The ongoing projects will be a credit to her ability to achieve a good outcome for the community. We wish her well for the future. We take this opportunity of congratulating Lisa Dixon in her new role as Councillor for Cerberus Ward and we look forward to working with Lisa in the future. We are sure you will do a lot for our community as you have done in the past. President and Committee

14.01.2022 A huge shout out to the wonderful people who turned up for the working bee at the historical society on Saturday 28th November. So much work was done and looks great. Still more to be weeded but the majority of the hard work has been done. I would particularly like to thank the following lovely people: Rodney and Jessica who started the big clean up over a week ago which made it easier for the following people to continue the clean up. Lynda, Jackie, Brenda, Michael, John, Ke...n, Sabrina and Lois. It was hard work pulling the weeds out and I really thank them all for their great effort. Santa will be good to them all. The garden will look great when we have finished weeding and spread mulch around. Thank you all, Dianne Maloney

13.01.2022 I am disapointed to note that a wire basket of Australian native orchids has been removed from our garden. It would be appreciated for it's return. We would be very happy to share this with whoever took it. Please return it. Thanks, Dianne Maloney, President.

09.01.2022 Origins of Remembrance Day Why is this day special to Australians? At 11 am on 11 November 1918 the guns on the Western Front fell silent after more than four years of continuous warfare. The allied armies had driven the German invaders back, having inflicted heavy defeats upon them over the preceding four months. In November the Germans called for an armistice (suspension of fighting) in order to secure a peace settlement. They accepted allied terms that amounted to uncondit...Continue reading

05.01.2022 Do any of our followers have any knowledge of a James Macfarlane in 1902 having a licence or worked at ‘Macfarlane’s Royal Hotel' Hastings? We have had an enquiry but we are unable to find any reference to him in our records or the hotel file. Thank you in advance.

04.01.2022 WE NEED HELP AT THE MUSEUM WORKING BEE 28 NOVEMBER, 2020 The Hastings-Western Port Historical Society is in urgent... need of helpers/volunteers to help restore our Pioneer Cottage garden which has gone wild since Covid19 hit us early this year, preventing our volunteers gardening. The weeds have taken over and our two volunteer member gardeners are struggling to pull it together. We are hoping to organize a working bee on Saturday 28th November 2020 between 9.00am and 3.00pm and invite any persons who would like to help and to donate an hour or two to pull some weeds. If we can get between 5-10 or more people, this would be massive help to us. Covid19 rules will be observed and we are looking at allocating a section per person. The Society will provide refreshments to the helpers. Unfortunately we are not able to facilitate children on the day for safety reasons. If you are able to help please post on our Facebook Page or email us at our temporary email address [email protected] with your details. Text messages can be sent to Dianne: 0416 121 791 or call Lynda: 59 77 4478 See more

01.01.2022 Copied with permission by Dick Roberts As we are nearing Chistmas again, i couldn't help but think back to how tough last year's was, and as i haven't shared any poems for awhile I'd thought i write one tonight. Christmas Rain "As the ashes fell in silence,... From the mountain sky’s that night The bush kids were playing, All was calm, all was bright. But Christmas Eve would change this year, And Santa he didn’t come, The wind had changed direction, All the families had to run. The smoke filled the valley’s, The sun you couldn’t see, Farm by farm went up in flames, All was lost to memories. We all fought to try and stop it, We all fought so hard in vain, Then all sat down in silence. And started praying for some rain. And didn’t it rain, like no Christmas we’d seen before, it rained in human kindness, The Aussie spirit did it roar. When we thought all was lost, When we couldn’t take no more, Truck loads of mateship, Came knocking at our door. There were those that were so lucky, There were those that just survived There were those that had lost everything, And those that lost their lives. But as we all sit down this Christmas, May we never forget, All those Australians, Those Australians we’d never met. Cause didn’t it rain, like no Christmas we’d seen before, it rained in human kindness, The Aussie spirit did it roar. When we thought all was lost, When we couldn’t take no more Truck loads of mateship, Came knocking at our door. So as the stars shine in silence, In the mountain sky’s this year When all the kids are playing, All full of Christmas cheer, Don’t forget to take a moment, To thank those no longer here, And those we’d never met, That showed up on a prayer" See more
