10.01.2022 Tax Time is almost here! Here are some of our tips to help you better prepare this Financial Year Don't be in a rush to lodge straight away.... It can take time for your employer to finalise your income statement with the ATO despite STP taking effect. This is especially true if you're employed by a smaller business. Rushing to lodge if not all the information is with the ATO may result in you having to lodge an amended return Err on the side of caution The ATO is getting smarter and they are always increasing their review activity around work-related deductions. Put simply, if you can't prove it, then don't claim it. Pre-fill isn't always complete Whilst the pre-fill system is excellent at starting the process of completing your tax returns it isn't always complete, particularly in July and August each year as banks, managed funds and financial institutions can take some time after the tax year ends to report your income to the ATO. This is why it's important that you retain all the necessary paperwork and provide it to your tax agent when preparing your tax return. Organise yourself Before securing a time with your tax agent, make sure to spend some time organising yourself by reviewing your income for the last year and identifying any potential deductions. Preparing in advance to complete your tax return really speeds up the process and takes the stress away.
