25.01.2022 WHAT IS SLEEP? Sleep is that super sexy thing you do at the end of the day where you let everything hang loose (if you know you know), put on those amazingly cool sausage dog pyjamas, jump into bed, lay your head on the pillow and close your eyes and head off into the land of captain snooze. Now we spend approximately one third of our days sleeping so its right up there with human essentials like food and water. Without sleep we are unable to create or maintain the ma...rvellous pathways in the brain that allow us to learn and create new memories and we cannot concentrate or respond to things quickly and be of sound mind. Now theres not an exactly perfect number of hours of sleep as each of us are very unique but its somewhere between 7-9 hours per night. During sleep, our body cycles through 4 different stages consisting of both rapid-eye-movement (REM) and non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep. These stages of sleep occur on average about 4-6 times per night and our sleep actually plays out in 90-minute cycles. Waking within one of those cycles can leave you feeling groggy and tired but if can wake at the end of cycle you will most likely feel more refreshed. This means you want to wake up at 6 or 7.5 or 9 hours of sleep. As the night progresses the length of REM sleep increases and the NREM sleep stages decrease. REM REM sleep is where most of our dreaming happens. The coolest thing about REM sleep is that we normally do not move as our muscles are paralyzed. If the temporary paralysis of REM sleep is disturbed, one can physically act out dreams and thats not always going to be a good thing (cast your mind back to some of the dreams you have had no judgements here). NREM NREM Sleep has 3 stages. Stage 1 non-REM sleep is the changeover from wakefulness to sleep and only lasts a few minutes. Stage 2 non-REM sleep is where you spend most of your sleep cycles. It is a period of light sleep before you enter deeper sleep and the stage where your body temperature drops and eye movements stop. Stage 3 non-REM sleep is the period of deep sleep that you need to feel refreshed in the morning. Its the sleep where people may find it difficult to wake you and occurs in longer periods during the first half of the night. 24.01.2022 Your biggest barrier to progress is... Most likely due to the fact that you don't have a plan made just for you. You've probably signed up for a gym membership with the hope that if you just start doing something all of a sudden everything will click.... Then you walk into this busy minefield of shiny weights and weird looking machines, but it all looks so daunting so off to the bike you go and the next 30 minutes is spent on that and then you repeat the same thing the next day, the day after that and so on. Or maybe youre following your friends lead and doing what they do because you think they look fabulous and you want to be just like them. The inspiration to get fitter and stronger is there, you've taken the first step but their is a huge barrier to keep the motivation running because you aren't sure if what you are doing is correct, if its right for you or if it really aligns with who you are as a person. This is where a plan needs to come into play. A plan that tells you what exercises you should be doing, when to go up in weight, when to go down in weight. How YOU should approach nutrition. Basically the next steps that's going to create momentum and keep you moving forward toward becoming the most physically capable human you can be. 21.01.2022 Feelin a little time poor? Get your hands on a slow cooker (crock pot), throw in some protein and vegetables and leave it overnight or through the day and Booomb! Slow cookers are great for super tender and juicy meat dishes and if you arent a meat eater then you can definitely make some delicious meals with beans and lentils and other plant proteins. ... You can bulk prep meals in a slow cooker and then freeze them for those nights where you cant be bothered or you want something quick and easy. We love our crock pot for: - Soups - Stews - Curries - Roasts - Bolognaise with all the veg - Pulled pork, beef, chicken, lamb, turkey Note: you can use the pulled meats for basically anything - tacos , pie filling, in a sandwich , on their own ** We were going to put a recipe in here for you but you can honestly google and find thousands of amazing recipes and there were too many mouth watering options to just pick one. Low Carb Low Fat Macros All your friends and the trainers you've had in the past all say that THEIR one is the best. You try it and maybe it works for a while and then it doesnt or maybe it just doesnt sit with you and your beliefs. So what now? It seems like it's never going to happen. WELL... It is going to happen (yes read that again) BUT... It's just going to take a little bit of experimentation, self awareness and honesty. There is the perfect diet for you - and that diet is, the one that suits your lifestyle best with minimal change. This perfect diet will evolve as you change and evolve (thats right the perfect diet will change!) You see the problem with most diets is that when people try to apply them, they try to apply them on to someone's lifestyle who is probably not suitable or not ready for those changes. Yes change is required, but it's likely the changes don't need to be as drastic as people make them. What you need is someone to look at your past experience with nutrition, what your lifestyle is like and guide you to finding changes that are easily achievable by you.
