25.01.2022 If you dream it, you can conduit! Last year University of Tasmania student Emma Calvert was awarded a $5000 Engineers Australia Driving Diversity Scholarship. This year, she helped launch the 2020 scholarships, proudly supported by us and Caterpillar. Engineers are solving some of our communitys biggest problems, so their workforce should be representative of our communitys diversity. Heres Emma with our CEO Steve Davy and Engineers Australia GM Darren Beattie.

25.01.2022 The Lady Nelson replica is a living piece of Tasmanian history. The pandemic made it hard to keep the ship sailing until a COVID-19 Community Grant from us enabled this not-for-profit operation to do some much-needed maintenance. Under the guidance of local volunteers, the future looks bright for the Lady Nelson and she will continue to be Tasmania’s own tall ship for many years to come. Find out more information on the Lady Nelson www.ladynelson.org.au/

24.01.2022 When it rains heavily during a storm at your homes, often the water runs off rooftops and pavements instead of soaking into the ground. This water can carry pollutants and sediments, draining into our stormwater systems and making its way into our rivers and lakes, making our aquatic ecosystems unhealthy. When water soaks into gardens or the bush, the water is taken up by the plants and is filtered. Building a raingarden in your yard can help prevent stormwater pollution. #ScienceWeek

24.01.2022 Tasmanians love water, and so do we. We’re not going to lie, we get happy when it rains and our lakes fill up. But there’s so much more to managing the lakes and water levels that feed our power stations, than just keeping dams full. From predicting the effects of climate change and monitoring rainfall, to managing the flow downstream for paddlers, irrigators and communities our water management team are out in the field and on the pulse of our most precious resource https://bit.ly/31p1KJS #NationalWaterWeek

24.01.2022 Did you participate in our community information session or survey on the King and Yolande Sustainability Review? Just like you, during the lockdown, we couldnt get out and about. Weve pushed our environmental studies back a bit and revised our timeline to launch the final report mid-2021. For more information visit https://bit.ly/2FauYnh

18.01.2022 Its a winter wonderland outside These beautiful pics were taken by the crew out at Lake Margaret Power Station today. Remember if you are out and about, stay warm and drive to the conditions.

17.01.2022 What’s involved in a pumped hydro feasibility study? A mix of civil workers, project managers, site managers, geologists and environmental specialists gather geotechnical and geological information from our pumped hydro sites as one of the study inputs. As you can see, we gather this in different ways either a hand-held 'wacker packer' for near surface profiling, or we can use an excavator for deeper soil profiling. All of this technical data gets analysed, catalogued and interpreted to help inform feasibility studies. You can find out more about our pumped hydro feasibility study here https://bit.ly/3kYUQT7

17.01.2022 Ever wondered how Gordon Dam was built? Peter de Weys shared some amazing images on the Tasmanian History page. They take us back to the days of construction, when 154 thousand cubic metres of concrete was poured to make a 140-metre high double curvature concrete arch dam, known today as Gordon Dam. They also show the power station being carved out of the earth 183 metres underground. The photos were taken in June 1976 on a trip to visit friends who were living in Strathgordon and working on the Gordon power scheme at the time. We're sure glad you shared them Peter Do you have any pics taken of our dams in construction?? We'd love to see them!

17.01.2022 As project manager in the civil assets team, James Weller is responsible for our large underground tunnel re-support project at Tribute Power Station. "One of the things about doing something like this is you could never do this on your own. There's a sense of achievement being part of a team that can undertake this kind of work. That's what keeps me going." says James. The Tribute project is all about resetting our tunnels for another 100 years, to make sure people are safe while working in our stations.

15.01.2022 National Threatened Species Day is a chance to raise awareness of our flora and fauna at risk of extinction. Our team go to great lengths to protect our threatened fish species in our lakes. The threatened fish monitoring program at yingina / Great Lake conducted by our teams at Hydro Tasmania and Entura has been ongoing for approximately eleven years. From this information we are able to monitor spawning activity, and ensure healthy populations of the Shannon paragalaxias and Great Lake paragalaxias. An improved understanding of fish behaviour and impacts of changing water levels on spawning habitat has provided us with the means to better protect these important species #ThreatenedSpeciesDay https://bit.ly/325CWah

12.01.2022 The Country Women's Association (CWA) ladies are some of the most giving among our community, they're also some of the most vulnerable. When CWA members from Whitemark and Altmoor on Flinders Island asked us for a COVID-19 Community Grant to create a safe environment to hold the CWA Open Day, we wanted to help. Travel restrictions and social isolation hit the Bass Strait islands hard, so in early October it was great to see the community come together to fire up the BBQ and hold a market and of course the cake stall You can see all the deserving COVID-19 grant recipients here https://bit.ly/3h7yBsf

12.01.2022 Plans for Recreation Day? Waddamana Power Station Heritage Site will be open Monday 2 November for Recreation Day - and entry is FREE as always! It's the perfect excuse for a drive in the country to learn about our island's hydropower history.

12.01.2022 If youve spent time on our lakes, theres a chance youve seen a galaxiid, a tiny fish no longer than 20cm thats incredibly precious. We have five threatened species of galaxiid in our lakes in Tasmanias central highlands, and four of these occur in Arthurs Lake and yingina / Great Lake. During National Science Week were sharing the work of our environmental scientists who are improving our knowledge of a species of fish thats essential to the ecosystem. #ScienceWeek

12.01.2022 Today we participated in the Tasmanian Youth Climate Leaders conference at the Hobart Grand Chancellor Hotel with Greening Australia. We want young Tasmanians to see opportunities for themselves in the future in our expanding renewable energy industry as the world seeks urgent action on climate change. The event brought youth climate leaders together with experts in the fields of climate science, climate change, renewable energy, STEM, and sustainability. As mentors, we were there to get students excited about a circular economy and renewable energy and the possibilities for change in their schools. By the end of the conference, we could feel the passion in the room. We’re proud to actively support Youth Climate Leaders in Tasmania.

01.01.2022 We like to think every kid is a natural-born scientist. That early curiosity can spark a career later in life, just as it did for our Environmental Scientists. The Climate and Environment teams at Hydro Tasmania and Entura take care of our lakes and keep aquatic ecosystems healthy for the flora, fauna and people that depend on them. They measure every parameter imaginable because even a slight change at our lakes can affect the health of the water systems that extend to our oceans. Its a big responsibility, but the team are up to the task! #ScienceWeek
