23.01.2022 Dont forget Neil will be in the shop Anzac Day afternoon from 1pm onwards. Next book on the new releases shelf is; Australias War with France - The Campaign in Syria and Lebanon, 1941 from Big Sky. 1941: Great Britain is fighting for its very existence. France has surrendered and installed Marshal Ptain, an ageing reactionary, as head of a hostile new government at Vichy. The Allied outpost in Egypt, and the Suez Canalits strategic jewelare threatened on both sizes. To ...the west, Rommel is rampaging through North Africa. To the east, the Germans are arming rebels and fostering an uprising in British Iraq. Churchills cabinet is reeling after disastrous campaign in Greece. There are fears of a German takeover in Vichy-controlled Syria and Lebanon, where a languishing French colonial army may fall in line with the Nazis. Churchill orders a disgruntled General Wavell to take the offensive, assuming that the French will not put up a fight against an Allied show of force. The only troops available are a division of Australians, the 7th: untested recruits, digging ditches in the Egyptian desert. See more

19.01.2022 Next new book in the shop is "The landing in the Dawn - Dissecting a legend. The Landing at ANZAC 25 April 1915 from Helion." Author: James Hurst. The Gallipoli Landing of 25 April 1915 is arguably Australias best known battle. It is commemorated each year with a national holiday, services, parades and great media attention. 2015, the centenary of the Gallipoli Campaign, was marked by great publicity and the release of many books, articles, films, documentaries and televisio...n series. Despite this attention, the Landing is still a poorly understood battle, with the historiography coloured by a century of misinformation, assumption, folklore and legend. The Landing in the Dawn: Dissecting a Legend The Landing at Anzac, Gallipoli, 25 April 1915, re-examines and reconstructs the Anzac Landing by applying a new approach to an old topic it uses the aggregate experience of a single, first-wave battalion over a single day, primarily through the investigation of veterans letters and diaries, to create a body of evidence with which to construct a history of the battle. 16.01.2022 Its a wrap! Today we closed the shop doors for the final time. Finishing up the shop would not have been possible without the help of our very generous friends who have volunteered countless hours to helping our family pack boxes of books, knock down shelving, remove the clutter and clear the cinema space. To them we will be eternally grateful and hope we can pay it forward to others that will need our help in the future. Neil will send a final note of closure in the coming... days, but for now I would like to personally say thank you so very much to our wonderful customers who have been coming and going for over 50 years. Melbourne wont feel the same without the bookshop I have grown up with. Being back in the bookshop after working there many years ago reminded me how lucky I was to meet quirky characters all with fascinating stories. It really is the end of an era. - Laura McKellar. 16.01.2022 New books in the shop, 199 Days The battle for Stalingrad. The story of the siege by the acclaimed author of Hitlers War In 199 Days, acclaimed historian Edwin P. Hoyt depicts the epic battle for Stalingrad in all its electrifying excitement and savage horror. More than the bloodiest skirmish in history-a momentous conflict costing three million lives-the siege was a hinge upon which the course of history rested. Had the Red Army fallen, the Nazi juggernaut would have rolled over Russia. Had the Germans not held out during those last few months, Stalin would have painted Europe red. Now, over 50 years after the most extraordinary battle of the second millenium, the truth about this decisive moment is finally revealed.

15.01.2022 We will be in the shop today from around 1pm for ANZAC day. Pop in for a chat and a book on our countries history.
