25.01.2022 Did you know? This week is pretty significant in the history of submarines. On 3 August 1958, the USS Nautilus the world’s first nuclear submarine completed the first undersea voyage to the geographic north pole.... On 8 August 2000, the wreckage of the attack sub Hunley was raised. Hunley sank after completing the first successful attack on a ship by submarine during the American revolution, in 1864! Our research elves were very surprised to discover how long submarines have been around for https://www.history.com/n/9-groundbreaking-early-submarines

24.01.2022 Did you know? July 21 is Lamington Day and yesterday our friends across the Ditch broke the record for world's biggest lamington! (https://www.upi.com//New-Zealand-breaks-rec/2021595342985/) Originating in Queensland in the late 1890s, this delicious treat has become an Australian icon. Traditionally made with a square of sponge cake dipped in chocolate sauce and coated in coconut, today there are variants that range from chocolate fudge brownie to pandan.... Hyphen clients Arnott’s and Bakers Delight have come up with their own takes on the lamington over the years let us know your dream lamington in the comments! (one of Hyphen's next gen suggests a glamington, with edible glitter mixed in with the coconut )

21.01.2022 Despite everything 2020 has thrown at us, Hyphen has been as busy as ever! It’s important to keep sharing histories, even when we’re a bit overwhelmed by a historical moment of our very own. We hear so many tales of resilience, patience and strength and that’s just in our daily Zoom meeting! In all seriousness, though, we hope you and yours are staying safe, and (especially in Melbourne) staying at home <3... Here are a couple of our Iso 2.0 workspaces, where the magic keeps happening show us yours in the comments!

It hasn’t all been clear skies, but the flying kangaroo has made it safely through all the turbulence. We are so excited to help celebrate this milestone and you can be part of the celebrations, too. Here is an elephant-related excerpt and some images from the book.... [Image credits: 1. Asian elephants, Num-Oi and Dokkoon with calf Ongard (Trent Browning) 2. 12.01.2022 Office update: As you probably know, Hyphen is based in Melbourne and has been operating under some form of lockdown for around 7 months now. Across our four households we have wrangled 5 kids, 3 cats, a dog and several chooks, all while working hard to keep telling our clients stories. We might be exhausted, but we’re proud of pulling through with most of our sanity, and all of our humour, intact.... In the past months we have welcomed several new clients, all with incredible histories to share. Stay tuned in the coming weeks as we introduce them to you!

12.01.2022 Publishing fact: On August 14 1457, the Mainz Psalter was printed in Mainz, Germany. It was a book of printing firsts: the first printed with two sizes of type and in three colours (black, red and blue), the first in Europe with a printed date of publication, and it contained the first printed colophon. In early printed books, the colophon gave information including the name of the printer, date and location of printing, and sometimes the name of a proofreader or editor, as w...ell as the printer’s mark. Today this information (along with copyright and library cataloguing details) can be found on a book’s imprint page check it out next time you look at a Bounce Book! To have a look at the absolutely gorgeous Mainz Psalter, go to https://www.rct.uk/collection/1071478/the-mainz-psalter

11.01.2022 On this day (27 August) in 1939, the first jet flight was completed by test pilot Erich Warsitz, in the German Heinkel He 178 (pictured). The first jet-propelled airliner (the ill-fated British De Havilland Comet) wouldn’t fly until 27 July 1949. Here at Hyphen we have become quasi-experts in Australia’s long and rich aviation history, through a very exciting project: Qantas’s 100-year anniversary. Stay tuned for sneak peaks into the gorgeous centenary book we have created.... [image of the He 178 from plane-encyclopedia.com]

11.01.2022 On this day (8 September) in 1948, the first British plane (de Havilland DH108) flew faster than sound; the first ever supersonic flight was just under a year earlier, on 14 Oct 1947 (American Bell X-1). But did you know that Qantas came very close to launching a supersonic Flying Kangaroo? Read more at https://www.qantasnewsroom.com.au//when-the-flying-kangar/ Fuel your appetite for aviation history with ‘The Flying Kangaroo: 100 years of Qantas’ coming soon! #qantas100book

09.01.2022 Did you know It’s Sourdough September! Jumping on the sourdough bandwagon has become something of a running joke in Melbourne this year, as many have tried making artisanal bread (with varying success) during our back-to-back lockdowns.... Hyphen client Bakers Delight has shared a beginner’s guide to baking sourdough at home. And for those who aren’t keen to nurture a starter or whose loaves refuse to ‘pop’, Bakers Delight has a whole range of sourdough products (and other yummy things) available. https://buff.ly/2YPQjt6

08.01.2022 Thank you to all our clients and friends, the big Hyphen family, for your care and support as we have navigated 2020's many challenges. All projects are still going full steam ahead, and we even have some new and exciting things on the horizon. However, with the commencement of stage 4 restrictions in Melbourne today, our office will no longer be attended. For any drop-offs or pick-ups, please contact us directly to make other arrangements.... Stay safe, stay home, and stay connected See more

04.01.2022 Did you know? Today is Pinot Noir day Hyphen clients Best’s and Elderton have very different opinions on pinot (but you’ll have to explore their websites to find out why!). Regardless, we’ll be raising a glass to celebrate one of the oldest grape varieties... and one of our favourite reds.... Let us know your favourite late winter/early spring bevvy in the comments!

03.01.2022 Did you know? The gorgeous building that houses the Hyphen offices wasn’t always so glamourous. In fact, it used to be a bacon factory! The Otto Wurth building is a heritage listed factory, built in 1862. The factory produced small goods under a range of different brands until 2006.... In this picture you can see the bacon factory on the right, and the Junction Hotel (where it still stands) in the centre. Things sure have changed!
