12.01.2022 This mama is definitely superwoman!! Can you imagine having 4 babies at once?? #Repost @heylindshay Just went down a rabbit hole of looking at pictures... from our time in the nicu and I was crying in this photo and Im crying as I type this out now. I cant believe these sweet, small four are now big, thriving, almost ONE year olds. What an incredible gift and reason to celebrate. It has been a whirlwind of emotions since this day and Im so grateful for everyone who has cheered me on during this transition of being a mom of one to five seemingly overnight. It truly takes a tribe, and sometimes its so nice to connect with mamas who have similar experiences and can relate. Thats exactly why I love @peanut app and Im hoping it can help a lot of you too. Its kind of like a dating app but for moms where you can schedule meet ups or keep it online to chat, vent, and ask questions. I love their groups and have been in some ranging from nicu life, to schedules, to baby led weaning, and now presently, one for first birthday party ideas. Theres something for everyone and such a great way to find the community we all need as a mama. I encourage you all to join - it's free! #peanutapp See more

12.01.2022 The fetal ejection reflex is the spontaneous bearing down or pushing that may occur towards the end of labor! The fundus, or top portion of the uterus, has buil...t in thickness with every contraction to eventually push baby out for you with a combination of hormones. I tend to see FER more in unmedicated births, especially those that are less interrupted or where the birthing person is in their labor zone. It can be a very overwhelming and uncontrollable sensation!! Did you experience FER?? We break down pushing techniques and cues more in depth in our childbirth education courses, offered both completely online and in person!

11.01.2022 Birthing on backs was easier for the doctor hence how it became entrenched in society

09.01.2022 The mechanisms of birth! Watched how baby moves through the pelvis and the cervix thins and opens (dilates). Such a great visual tool to help understand labour.... Repost @themindfulbirthgroup Visualisation is such an important part of keeping calm and relaxed. It helps to take our mind off of what is out of our control, and in this case its the mothers natural expulsive reflex to birth her baby. This incredible video shows mums body and baby working together to birth baby in the most comfortable way for both of them Some women find it helpful to visualise baby moving in this way at the birthing stage, others find the letter J helps them to direct their breathing, and some like a waterfall visual. Choose something that works for you and use it when you start feeling the natural urge to bear down . . . . #birth #childbirth #naturalbirth #pregnancy #midwifery #journeytomotherhood

09.01.2022 I always look for this The rhombus of Michaelis (sometimes called the quadrilateral of Michaelis) is a kite-shaped area that includes the three lower lumber... vertebrae, the sacrum and that long ligament which reaches down from the base of the scull to the sacrum. . This wedge-shaped area of bone moves backwards during the second stage of labour and as it moves back it pushes the wings of the ilea out, increasing the diameters of the pelvis. We know its happening when the womans hands reach upwards (to find something to hold onto, her head goes back and her back arches.) Its what Sheila Kitzinger was talking about when she recorded Jamaican midwives saying the baby will not be born till the woman opens her back. Im sure that is what they mean by the opening of the back. . . The reason that the womans arms go up is to find something to hold onto as her pelvis is going to become destabilised. This happens as part of physiological second stage; its an integral part of an active normal birth. If youre going to have a normal birth you need to allow the rhombus of Michaelis to move backwards to give the baby the maximum amount of space to turn his shoulders in. Although the rhombus appears high in the pelvis and the lower lumbar spine when it moves backwards, it has the effect of opening the outlet as well. . .When women are leaning forward, upright, or on their hands and knees, you will see a lump appear on their back, at and below waist level. Its much higher up than you might think; you dont look for it near her buttocks, you look for it near her waist." . 07.01.2022 Your care providers are there to serve you and support you, NOT to impose their preferences upon you. Your choices should be respected. Kirsten Small from @birt...hsmalltalk said this recently and I love it! Kirsten is an obstetrician and academic and is on point in her words. Women shouldnt be doing what their care providers want them to do, care providers should be doing what women want them to do. #birth #midwives #obstetrics #obstetrician #autonomousbirth #birthpower #transformativebirthwork See more

06.01.2022 VERNIX CASEOSA.... Vernix is a thick creamy waxy substance that covers the body of the newborn (reminds me of cocoa butter!). It's seen more in babies born a co...uple of weeks prior to the 'due date' as it reduces towards the end of pregnancy. It is made up of water, fats and proteins. The vernix protects and nourishes the baby's soft skin, has antimicrobial properties and acts as a barrier in the uterus to stop the amniotic fluid macerating the skin in the womb. Can you imagine how your skin would look after 9 months in the bath! . Vernix is thought to help with an easier transition through the birth canal and it thought to aid temperature regulation at birth. . When a baby is born, the newborn skin undergoes a number of changes and adaptions to the outside world in terms of PH and hydration. Vernix helps to regulate these changes so its worthwhile not bathing baby to soon. Think of vernix as a moisturiser and rub it in rather than wipe it off! . It is recommended by WHO to wait at least 24 hours before bathing a newborn (I would even say 2/3 days) as it has its benefits including reduced risk of infection, better temperature regulation, more skin to skin time leading to better breastfeeding outcomes and blood sugar regulation. If your baby has a little dried blood in their hair and it bothers you, you can always wipe the hair gently with a cloth and warm water. Pic: @sagemamadoula VIA @placentar_energia_vitalidade

03.01.2022 I didnt know that! Are we loosing normal through interventions? What impact does it have on development? How does lifestyle effect genetics? 01.01.2022 The toilet is dilation station . You naturally relax your pelvic floor and perineum while sitting on a toilet You are more used to being relaxed in the ba...throom You can turn the lights down and even straddle the toilet backwards to help make you more comfortable and relaxed (use pillows) You are working with gravity You are opening your pelvis, which gives baby lots of room to navigate through the birth canal . #Repost @thewarriorwithinbirth : @thebirthbutler . #Labor #Birth #Homebirth #Contractions #DilationStation #HolisticDoula #Doula #Midwifery #StudentMidwife #BirthWarriors #Love See more
