20.01.2022 It is with sadness that I have learned the recent passing of George Novak. I met George back in 1999 when I was making my first film Lost:Black Earth. He came on board as the Stunt Co-ordinator, but brought so much more with his extensive insight into the film industry, his sense of excitement and adventure, and his constant eagerness to help. I went on to work with George on a number of projects over a number of years. Somewhere along the way, however, we lost touch with eac...h other as I moved more into the post-production arena and George did less and less work within the film industry. It is now with regret that it has been several years since I last saw him. I sit here and wonder what went wrong as I have learned that he took his own life. I cant help but feel that maybe he is in a better place. George was an old-school stunt man from an era now gone. He drank whisky, seduced women, and flirted with danger at every opportunity. He was that iconic 70s stuntman and lived it on and off the screen. In todays world of political correctness, workplace health and safety and digital visual effects, I imagine he was confronted with a world that no longer made sense. I will always remember George as one of the good guys. One of the very few people in this vulgar industry that I had respect for. The guy who helped get my career going. George, you will be missed. The world is more beige without you in it. Heres hoping that the afterlife is filed with tall buildings to jump off, fast cars to crash and women to Well, I hope youre having the fun that you clearly lost down here. See you in the next life my friend. http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0636844/

17.01.2022 Some excerpts of a review of STRESSED TO KILL by Stu Willis, of SexGoreMutants website (not up on the site yet, but coming soon!). Thanks, Stu. STRESSED TO KILL... Australian filmmaker Mark Savage has been on the scene for three decades, making waves from the very start of his career with 1986s ultra-violent shot-on-video cult classic MARAUDERS. His filmography has been intriguingly eclectic since then, taking in such delights as comedic action movie SENSITIVE NEW AGE KILLER, arthouse gore epic DEFENCELESS: A BLOOD SYMPHONY and the grim drama STAINED - a short that I loved, but find too harrowing to return to in any great hurry. STRESSED TO KILL is different again. Co-written by Savage and Parnell, its an absorbing riff on everyday paranoias and irks, finding dark humour in the slow-burning mental descent of one man whos well and truly had enough. Which may make it sound a little like TAXI DRIVER or FALLING DOWN, but the comparisons end there. Oberst Jr is great in the lead role. Hes on the screen for the majority of the film, and his performance dominates. His lived-in face is a burning well of intensity from the off, all piercing eyes and tight-lipped anxiety. We like his character from the start, despite sensing from a very early juncture that hes going to be getting up to some pretty nasty things. His character is an everyman, a beleaguered underdog: Savage never allows us to become alienated from him. Ive likened Oberst Jr to a 70s/80s-era Harvey Keitel before, and this resemblance remains true in STRESSED TO KILL. The physical likeness is there facially, and in the dry vocal patterns both actors deliver. Beyond that, a concentrated energy they both share which makes for magnetic viewing while portraying flawed characters that we cant help but identify with. Whats remarkable about Oberst Jr is that not only is he insanely prolific - as well as having over 150 acting credits (film and TV) on IMDb since 2007, he regularly performs to acclaim on the stage - he puts his all into each performance. Hes true to form here. But this isnt a one-man show. Able support comes from the excellent Assante, who oozes icy cool whenever hes on the screen. Hes a formidable presence with a nice line in sardonic delivery. If anything, hes slightly underused here. Curtis is persuasive as the unlikeable bitch of a wife; Hilton provides entertainment value as Bills rogue-with-a-heart buddy. Savage directs with a keen sense of pace and tone. The humour is dark and subtle for the most part, allowing even seemingly dafter set-piece scenes, such as Oberst Jr dressing in drag to infiltrate an addicts group in order to get to an intended victim, to play with an odd sense of plausibility. The tone is low-key compared to earlier Savage works, allowing for characterisation to take centre stage. Dont expect a gorefest: the violence is quite subdued. But this works in that the story and characters carry the film, its balance of drama and dark comedy conspiring to deliver a hugely satisfying riff on vigilante cinema. Shot in HD, the film looks great throughout. Each scene has clearly been prepared with precision and the results are highly attractive at all times. Even if the film doesnt find its feet on the cinema circuit, it feels perfectly suited to DVD (blu-ray, hopefully?) and even future TV screenings. A pitch-perfect essay on the matter of not simply accepting the shit life throws at you anymore, with a central character who speaks vicariously for all our inner wishes, STRESSED TO KILL impressed me deeply.

17.01.2022 In STRESSED TO KILL, our hero Bill (Bill Oberst Jr.) is driven crazy by daily stresses that cause him to have a heart attack. His best friend Stan (Marshal Hilt...on) is one of those daily stresses, too. When his doctor advises him to identify and eliminate the stresses from his life, Bill he uses a blowpipe and a poisoned dart to fix his problems. What daily stresses raise your blood pressure? What might force you to pick up a blowpipe? The best five answers will receive posters of the movie after it opens.

12.01.2022 3 days ago I got the sad news that Chris Birkett had passed away. Although I hadnt seen Chris in about ten years, I always considered him a friend and simply life got in the way. I met Chris at the very beginning of my film career while he was working at Act 3 animation studios. Looking to get into visual effects, a mutual friend introduced us and thought he may be able to point me in the right direction. I have to say, meeting an immaculately suited man in a cutting edge an...imation facility at that time was somewhat intimidating and nerve racking to say the least. Yet what I soon realised was Chris kind, gentle and extremely generous nature. He showed me around, introduced me to people I have no memory of today and we talked about films for quite a while. A few years later, having stayed in touch with Chris, I asked if hed be interested in helping out with a small indy feature film I was making. I hoped hed spend a few hours with me, give me some pointers and maybe a bit of advice along the way. What I didnt expect, was for him to get excited at the idea and wanting to have a bigger role in the production. He came on board as the Production Manager and I can honestly say, without his guidance and brilliant organisational skills, I dont think the movie wouldve gotten finished. Not that any of the rest of the cast or crew really knew of him or his brilliance as I dont recall him actually coming to set :D After that we became quite close friends and a few years down the track we were both helping out and giving our time and advise to newbies wanting to make films. I learned a lot from Chris, about generosity, giving and having a sense of zen about everything (although that one took quite a while before I realised it). It was also from Chris that I learned how to exit the film industry and have a life beyond the chaos. Although at the time he did, I couldnt understand why anyone would want to and his leaving to become a chef, baffled me. Over the years we drifted apart as life took us in different directions. Im happy to say that we got to speak on the phone about a year ago. He told me that hed found a box of memorabilia from Lost, the movie we had made together and asked if Id like it. Of course, I said yes. He also told me there was a surprise waiting for me when I picked it up. It seems it wasnt meant to be. We tried organising a time to catch up several times over the year to no prevail. I guess Ill have to wait a while for that surprise now. Chris, you were one of the kindest, gentlest souls I ever met and you will be missed my friend. James Cole

04.01.2022 Today I release Lost: Black Earth with the DIRECTORS COMMENTARY that I recorded way back in 2004, not long after the movie was completed. This give a lot of ins...ight into how we created this overly ambitious project for around $10k with no clue how to make a movie. A lot of lessons learned along the way. Ive considered recording a new commentary with 20 years of industry experience and hindsight under my belt since first coming up with this crazy idea. Ill see how the interest is with this one first :) https://youtu.be/jaaWZEp-dcw
