22.01.2022 Every time we teach a child to read, we know that weve fulfilled our purpose. This purpose is to support children with the acquisition of reading skills because the outcomes are so valuable and ongoing: confidence, happiness, pleasure in reading new stories, firing the imagination, and the ability to apply these skills to writing stories of ones own. 20.01.2022 You know how sometimes you struggle to understand something. You know how you feel a bit inadequate. It seems all your friends get it but you just cant see the point. Our little learners are just the same! We need to recognise that learning is a personal thing. We need to embrace different learning styles and celebrate all the successes.

10.01.2022 The Holiday Experience Phew we say holidays are here at last. It is so nice to take the foot off the pedal and have some leisurely meals at a less frantic pace. The teacher in me (its ingrained) suggests that we should capture some of the new learning opportunities that abound at this time of year. It has been shown that the best learning occurs when there is heightened emotion, and when kids dont see the experience as a formal learning occasion. For example, What di...d you do at school today? is often greeted with Oh, nothing much! We just played! So what is the best way to keep the learning happening? Here are some ideas. (Not all original). Encourage a debate at dinner time about something dear to your childs heart it doesnt have to be World Peace but what about Should students have to wear a uniform to school? or Should mobile phones be banned at school. Make sure an opinion is backed with some reasoning. (Oh that is interesting. Why do you think that?) Get the kids to bring their books in the car (leave the devices at home). Encourage your child to read their favourite passage from their latest book out loud. Maybe an older child will read to a younger sibling. See if they can provide a similar word in place of a word they may have struggled with. I spy is still a great car game or spotto (how many red cars can we spot till we get off the motorway). I love the idea also of getting children to listen to a sentence and then adding on their own item, then the next person has to add that item and one of their own. For example, First person: I went shopping and I bought a raincoat. Second person: I went shopping and I bought a raincoat and an umbrella. Third person: I went shopping and I bought a raincoat and an umbrella and a hat. Keep it going as long as you can! (Such good training for the brain. Ask your children to illustrate their favourite character or even favourite occurrence from a book or movie, then use their words to describe what they have drawn. Play word games like boggle, hangman and junior scrabble. Hangman can be played while waiting for a bus or train. Help younger ones by inserting a few vowels or consonants at the start. Dig out all the board games and progressively play the lot. There is often lots of strategy involved as well as luck! Use the toy catalogues as stimulus for creating a money problem. How much money will I need to buy these three toys? Will I get any change from $100.00? Enjoy this special time of the year and keep their brains working in different ways. Merry Christmas everyone. 08.01.2022 Is your child struggling to have success in their school studies. Perhaps you feel there is something not quite "clicking" for your child. Dont be afraid to seek help early so that problems dont compound. It is easier to oil the squeaky wheel rather than wait till the thing stops turning altogether!
03.01.2022 Children are our greatest asset. They renew us. They enliven us. They give us hope. I delight in the achievements of my students and I struggle when they struggle too. As teachers, we live the experiences of our charges. We agonise when they search for meaning. We question the approach when they dont understand. We look to employ different tactics. The learning process is different for all of us and as teachers we have to accept and embrace that. Sometimes what work...ed yesterday doesnt cut it today. Sometimes the methods we employed last week dont hold true in the new environment. Sometimes the great approach for a class is just not suitable for an individual learner. Likewise, the approach for this individual learner doesnt work for the other individual learner who has a specific learning difficulty. The child we meet today is different to the child we met yesterday. This child may have had an upset in the morning. This child may have missed breakfast or had a disrupted nights sleep. The background history is not something we are privy to but it can deeply impact the learning environment. In our present school environment we have stressed teachers trying to implement a ridiculously full curriculum for fear that they will not meet the expectations of their principal and the governing body as well as the expectations of parents. When teachers are stressed, is it possible that stress is transferred to students and their achievements? Lets just embrace a love of learning for learnings sake. Lets just let kids explore, discover and delight in learning. Lets not put unbelievable pressure on students so that they question their ability or worse still opt out of the learning environment. We are here to learn. Lets make the most of it. Lets make it easy for our greatest assets. See more

02.01.2022 An old sentiment but true
01.01.2022 How important is confidence in the learning equation? There are so many factors that can impact a childs learning. Children generally have a lot of optimism and it is sad to see a child who, for whatever reason, lacks confidence in their ability. Have you heard your child say I cant do that or I am no good at How do you respond?... As adults we accept that we have strengths and weaknesses but often some of the false or misleading messages we tell ourselves are also a hang up from our own school days. We might have been given poor grades with little opportunity to rectify that inadvertent branding. With so much testing and grading and competition for places in our schools, it is important not to lose sight of the need to recognise that we can instil a love of learning in our little ones and also the not so little ones. If children come from a place of inquisitiveness and they are rewarded for their interest, the rest is easy. Success breeds success and it is really important to celebrate the little successes. Do you remember the elation you experienced when you found your balance and could ride your bicycle without the training wheels? That is what I am aiming for when I seek success for my students. In all my interactions with students, my big ticket items are ensuring that we have a good communication system (where the child feels at ease) and that I develop a love of learning through continually having little successes which build a childs confidence.
