14.01.2022 Australias national parks are worth $145 billion to the economy from the improved mental health of people who visit them, according to research by a team from Griffith University. Previous studies found physical benefits to spending time in nature, including lowered stress levels, but none had been done looking at the mental health effects. National parks are believed to offset $29 billion in health costs in Queensland. Research team leader Professor Ralph Buckley said he hoped the findings would give a good indication of the inherent value of national parks, which he feared was becoming overlooked. The research is published in Nature Communications: https://www.nature.com/articles/s41467-019-12631-6

09.01.2022 Anxiety and depression: why doctors are prescribing gardening rather than drugs Social prescriptions non-medical treatments which have health benefits are a...lready used across the NHS to tackle anxiety, loneliness, and depression. They often involve the referral of patients to a community or voluntary organization, where they can carry out activities which help to meet their social and emotional needs, and increasingly doctors are opting for community gardening as this also has the added benefit of involving time spent in nature even in highly built-up areas. #depression #anxiety #mentalhealth #psychology #gardening #communitygardens #neuroscience #science

03.01.2022 Biomarker for schizophrenia can be detected in human hair Working with model mice, post-mortem human brains, and people with schizophrenia, researchers at the R...IKEN Center for Brain Science in Japan have discovered that a subtype of schizophrenia is related to abnormally high levels hydrogen sulfide in the brain. Experiments showed that this abnormality likely results from a DNA-modifying reaction during development that lasts throughout life. In addition to providing a new direction for research into drug therapies, higher than normal levels of the hydrogen sulfide-producing enzyme can act as biomarker for this type of schizophrenia. #genetics #psychology #mentalhealth #schizophrenia #neuroscience #science
