10.01.2022 George Bernard Shaw once observed Two percent of the people think; three percent of the people think they think; and ninety-five percent of the people would rather die than think. Well now comes a study from the University of Virginia that confirms Shaw's observations. Researchers found that the study participants generally did not enjoy spending even brief periods of time alone in a room with nothing to do but think, ponder or daydream. The participants, by and large, enjo...yed much more doing external activities such as listening to music or using a smartphone. Some even preferred to give themselves mild electric shocks rather than to think! U.Va. psychologist Timothy Wilson notes that broad surveys have shown that people generally prefer not to disengage from the world, and, when they do, they do not particularly enjoy it. Based on these surveys, Americans spent their time watching television, socializing or reading, and actually spent little or no time thinking". What is striking, the investigators write, is that simply being alone with their own thoughts for 15 minutes was apparently so aversive that it drove many participants to self-administer an electric shock that they had earlier said they would pay to avoid. The mind is designed to engage with the world, Wilson said. Even when we are by ourselves, our focus usually is on the outside world. And without training in meditation or thought-control techniques, which still are difficult, most people would prefer to engage in external activities. 07.01.2022 Don’t Take My Uber Away !!! Uber's making itself too big to ban as it faces ongoing threats from regulators to shut them down. Ever since receiving & ignoring a cease & desist demand from transit regulators in San Francisco, Uber's first city (2010) they have followed the same play-book: keep the wheels on the road & the strategy has worked! However the uncertainty that comes with the move to regulate Uber into extinction can’t be too comforting to Silicon Valley investors. Although it also didn't deter more than $1.2Bill in funding so far. The more they popularize themselves the stronger their argument becomes.
