23.01.2022 The Challenge This post is not about the 30-Day #ScholarshipSuccessChallenge, although they are connected (if you want to join and transform your scholarship journey, sign up here: flutterwave.con/pay/30dssc but it’s not free). What I mean to say is that the challenge with many people is not that they do not have enough challenges to change their lives. The challenge is they are too afraid to face any challenge. They think any challenge thrown at them is meant to to pull th...em down or stop them from fulfilling their dreams while on the other hand, for every challenge you overcome, it gets you a step closer to your dreams. If King David were to live in our day, he would still go for Goliath’s head and he would have called it #FaceYourGoliathChallenge or #KillYourGoliathChallenge. That man was something else. Goliath wasn’t his first taste of a challenge. He had dealt with seemingly lion and bear challenges. So, the young man turned king was a master in taking challenges. I haven’t taken up any #KillALionChallenge or #KillABearChallenge in my life like David did, neither have I gone against any called Goliath. At least, not in the physical. And I don’t and wouldn’t dare to. But I have in my little ways, been courageous enough to face the lions, bears and Goliaths of my life. I remember when I was the most timid boy in the class or the group. I remember when I wasn’t sure I was going to have a life I would look back to and be proud of. I remember when I was afraid to speak out against what I do not agree with. I remember when I wasn’t sure if what I’m heading for would work and so because of my deep-seated uncertainty wouldn’t try at all. The challenge is that you are too afraid to face a challenge. You think it’ll kill you. You are afraid you’d lose all. You are not sure if you’ll succeed or make it through the challenge. You don’t know if it’s worth it. Can I tell you something? Okay. If you don’t take the challenge, you’ll remain at the same spot till this time next year. It’s not a curse. It’s a fact. Reality. Truth. Nothing moves or changes until you move or change. Remember the four leprous men at the city gate in the book of 2nd Kings? Remember how they faced their fears? They’d rather die go look for food than sit and die. You know what? You are yet not hungry enough. You’d rather stay hungry than die. That’s the easiest choice most people make. Which would you choose? The challenge is you are too afraid to face the challenge. 11.01.2022 Do the work that matters I have not written here as I used too in a long time now. I just felt I should today. And it is about something I have observed in the past few weeks. It is about preparing and taking opportunities. Recently, Chevening Scholarship opened call for applications. One of the requirements for anyone to be eligible to apply is having a minimum of 2-year working experience. ... Now, here’s where I am going with this, and there are 2 point I want to make. First is, reading through what could make up the 2-year work experience, you’ll realise that volunteering work done over two years, even across different organisations could count if they amount to 2800 hours. Again, meaningful work done while studying as well can be accumulated and presented as work experience for the purpose of the application. Volunteering? Oh yes! Did I hear you say is it that important? Well, it is more important than you think. Second point is, we live in a generation where volunteering is no longer fanciful for many young people. I remember volunteering for several organisations under the UN Online Volunteer Program. I was not paid for those jobs but I got certificates, several of them that I included in my CV. Now, you can agree with me that those certificates must have contributed to some of the opportunities I have enjoyed. Do you know what this means for anyone who has up to two years volunteering experience and is applying for Chevening scholarship, say, for example? It’s simple. He or she can use those volunteering hours to prove work experience. And not just for Chevening scholarship. This applies to very many other opportunities that may come your way. Work experience does not come only when you are engaged in a formal and paid employment. As a student, seek opportunities to volunteer for organisations. If you are currently on your National Youth Service or about leaving soon for one, make up your mind to utilise your time volunteering as well. Do not mind the money at first. It will come with time as you consistently commit to volunteering. As a matter of fact, the doors that open to you via volunteering is incomparable to any money you could be paid for it. Do not let anyone, or better still, your mind tell you it is a waste of time to volunteer. Be wise. Use your time as an exchange to build your net worth. Do the work that matters. Enough said!
