03.01.2022 watch in HD for best experience! though the term petrichor was coined by 2 Australian CSIRO researchers in 1964, it has a much older history in many parts of the world. one of these places is Kannauj, in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. the village is famous for its millennia-old perfume (attar) making tradition, the ancient distillation process known as deg-bhapka. one of its most culturally significant scents is ‘the smell of life’, mitti attar - otherwise known as petric...hor. dried clay is broken up from the earth, shaped into disks with water, and baked in a kiln. these disks are then shoveled into giant copper called degs, each built atop its oven with a trough of water, and connected to a condenser known as a bhapka. water is poured into the deg, and a lid is hammered on and sealed with mud. the fire below is ignited, and sandalwood oil, the purest base scent, is added to the bhapka. the deg and bhapka are connected with a hollow bamboo pipe to carry the vapours. it may take 7 hours for all of the aroma to be released from the clay, at which point the bhapka is drained through a hole in the bottom, siphoning off the water until only the fragrant oil collected on top remains. mitti attar, like all attars, is then stored in special leather bottles called kuppi before being transferred to smaller vessels for trade. video taken from segments of Perfume City Kannauj by Milton Francis
