21.01.2022 This week is National Stroke Week and we are very proud to share Paul's story. Paul suffered a massive stroke 6 years ago at the age of 34. He was young, fit a...nd healthy. Throughout the past 6 years Paul has beat all the odds with absolute resilience, mental strength and positivity. Paul is committed to to sharing his story and inspiring others while raising awareness of strokes, particularly in younger people. In 2020, National Stroke Week is all about celebrating every day Australians who know and can recognise the signs of stroke. These are the heroes who act quickly and ultimately save lives... like Paul's wife! Do you know the signs of stroke? Fortunately @StrokeFoundation have created an easy way to remember the most common signs... FAST. Face - Check if their mouth has drooped? Arms - Can they lift both arms? Speech - Is their speech slurred? Do they understand you? Time - Is critical! If you see any of these signs call 000 straight away. Head to Stroke Foundation website for more detailed signs and what to do while waiting for an ambulance https://strokefoundation.org.au/About-Str//signs-of-stroke To learn more about Paul's journey to recovery visit: Paul Fink - Stroke Survivor #OnSide #SupportCoordination #NDISProvider #IndependentSupportCoordination #StrokeWeek2020 #NationalStrokeWeek #StrokeFoundation

20.01.2022 Dan Maitland at TrainingwithMates and his crew are getting up early, running/walking to raise funds and awareness of young stroke survivors as part of the #Stride4Stroke - the annual Stroke Foundation campaign. Inspired by Dan’s sister (Bec), they are highlighting the invisible symptoms of stroke. Speaking with Dan last week, he is very excited and pumped for the event - especially with fundraising so far. Sadly for me, I cannot go to this event tomorrow because other com...mitments, but I am sharing the details with you. If you are awake early tomorrow morning, cheer the runners/walkers on at Beach Road (Mordialloc Foreshore, Black Rock, Hampton Beach, Beaumaris in Melbourne). Dan’s crew has raised over $16,000 already - phenomenal effort!!! - and it is available to donate still if you want. https://www.stride4stroke.org.au//TWMSTRID/stride-4-stroke Dan said Your donation will help the Stroke Foundation support those affected right now and fund research to help prevent stroke, save lives and enhance recovery. Well said Dan!! Good luck Dan and the crew!! All the best Paul #strokesurvivor #stroke #brain #exercise #fightstroke Fight Stroke Australia

19.01.2022 It was enjoyable to take part of the fourth and final workshop for the NOVELL redesign today. The study aims to revolutionise the design and outcome of stroke rehabilitation environments. Every session was online, using technologies like Zoom and Miro platforms. The workshops which bring together stroke survivors, carers, architects and designers, policy makers, clinicians, and neuroscience researchers to collaboratively reimagine what rehabilitation environments could be. I... hope my feedback was beneficial for the project, giving my ‘patient’ perspective on rehabilitation. 15.01.2022 Check out my new 'Handy Hints' - How to do shoelaces with one hand. After my stroke, my inpatient rehab occupational therapist - Bianca - tried to get me to consider getting orthopaedic type-velcro shoes, however I wasn’t interested and thought there had to be a way for me to wear my own shoes and tie up laces with one hand. I was pretty stubborn - especially in the hospital over 6 years ago - because I was trying to fight to reclaim my independence. Read more...... 13.01.2022 This week is National Stroke Week and the Stroke Foundation is celebrating everyday Australians who know and can recognise the signs of stroke and saving lives simply by knowing and recognising the F.A.S.T. (Face, Arms, Speech, Time) signs of stroke and calling an ambulance immediately. While I had no warning signs of my stroke - my deterioration was so quick - but if Lauren didn’t call an ambulance, I will be not here, so I will forever grateful for her decision making, quic...k thinking, love and support - that’s why Lauren Fink is my F.A.S.T hero. 11.01.2022 Handy Hints: How to wear contact lenses with one hand. -... I was 12 years old when I started wearing glasses and I was 20 years old when I started wearing contact lenses. Luckily, my prescription is relatively low (I think 2 or 3) so I can see okay but I need glasses or contact lenses for driving, playing and watching sports, watching TV and movies etc - basically I am short-sighted (also known as myopia). I think almost 50 percent of adults in Australia are short-sighted, so it is very common. Initially, contacts lenses were a pretty scary proposition and I was pretty hesitant to wear it. It was a pretty long process to be comfortable wearing it because obviously I was not keen to damage my eyes. Before the stroke, I was wearing glasses or contact lenses almost every day. In the winter months, I mainly used glasses - except when swimming and (more recently COVID-19 lockdown because it is very annoying to wear a mask with glasses!!) - and in the summer, I used contact lenses often, mainly for exercise and because I prefer to wear contact lenses and non-prescription sunglasses at the same time - less hassle. Exercise and swimming was a big part of my rehabilitation, but after the stroke, I was frustrated because I was not able to wear my contacts with one-handed. I needed to ask my wife, nurses or therapists to help me every time. I tried to do it with my (non-affected) left hand, but it was almost impossible to do. I even considered applying for laser eye surgery, because - aside from the (almost) impossibility of practicality wearing my contacts with one-handed - my face muscles in my right side are not firing well (eg. little bit of lazy eye), but, realised it was financially unlikely also. So, after a while and a few Google and YouTube searches, I tried again. It was a lot of trial and error and ruined contacts (fortunately I use 14 days disposable lenses), but, eventually, I actually did it and I am pretty proud of myself because I still use the same method now. Anyone else use this method? Any other ways you found helped for you to wear contact lenses after your stroke? 09.01.2022 Visitors at Caulfield Hospital was a lifeline for me, my wife, my son, my family and friends after my stroke - over six years ago. I am thinking of the patients that in hospital right now. I can’t imagine the pain and the frustration of the not allowed to see loved ones. I especially feel for those patients who have suffered a brain injuries, and who, like me, struggle to communicate using a phone or computer. I am also applauding the essential workers. In my eyes,... all the staff medical, nursing, allied health, catering were all #heroes but now even more so as they are forced to take on the extra responsibilities that stopping visitors creates.
