25.01.2022 We had a brilliant mini vacay this weekend with gorgeous friends! I made us take this photo, on the steps to the cabin. We had cabins next to each other which was perfect. My favourite holiday as a kid was when we went away to The islands of Perhentian in Malaysia. We used to drive en masse, catch the ferry over and have a week or two on this tropical island. We went off with each other, playing on the beach, exploring the jungle and loving the freedom. ... I want to give my kids that same experience, holidaying with great friends and going off on their own to explore, play and enjoy their freedom. 24.01.2022 Been testing out my airbrush today for my latest mural... I think tomorrow will be my third trip to Bunnings... I bought a paint sprayer... perfect for the large areas and the white. Too messy for anything else... so back in today to buy a airbrush and compressor .... but as you can see, it’s just a little too fine. So tomorrow I’m heading back to get a different attachment for the compressor which will hold more paint, but not as much as the paint sprayer... ... it’s like Goldilocks and the Three Bears!!! I’ll paint over most of that tomorrow, making it less hectic... 22.01.2022 I’ve started a new mural today. It’s going to be a GOOD one!!! I can feel it. I’m doing it differently... I’m going to paint with an airbrush for the first time. I usually use a brush, but in 2021 I want to paint bigger murals and more of them, with vibrant colours and gorgeous details. Using a brush will be so time consuming and won’t get the results I have in my mind... so here I go! Hopefully my experiment will work.. and I’ll nail this airbrush technique... and then I...’ll be smooth sailing to tackle any mural!!! 20.01.2022 Omg!!! I finished! Yay... I’m so excited about this latest mural! It was a dream project, such a great subject matter and it came out exactly how I had pictured it in my mind! : This mural sits outside their kitchen window, which had looked out onto a concrete wall. No one wants that right??? : ... Luckily for me, they decided a mural would be the perfect way to add colour and interest to their breakfast views. : I created the design, and once approved, drew freehand onto the wall and then painted it. It took 3 days on total.. : This is the third mural since COVID, and I am really loving them! In fact, I could quite happily move into doing them all the time!!! 19.01.2022 This came up on my feed this morning. It was 1 YEAR before I launched my business. I was struggling as a mum living in Newcastle, so far away from family. So we decided to move here, to THAILAND, where many of my brothers and my dad lived. (yes, I have a lot of brothers!) Living in Thailand is very different with a baby as opposed to without. I had been used to climbing, diving, going out on the boat, going on adventures and staying out late at night and island hoping. Movin...g there with baby Aidan was much more restricting, and very isolating. It was also prone to many a power cut, which is when this picture was taken. Using the heavy rain dripping from the roof to wash baby's bum. Also making sure to avoid the snakes that would frequent this grass area. Ahhh... good times!!! Yikes! It was in this house that I started the ball rolling for IAMPOPPY. In between nap times, I put together a mood board, planned out how I would market. Cooly markets was on that mood board, and became a reality in 2013! I edited old works ready for sale and started my instagram to share my work. I had a clear vision of starting a life in the arts. We moved back to the GC at the end of this year, and it took another year before I was able to start selling. And never looked back!! I do miss Thailand. Mostly because it reminds me of my childhood, and I miss being close to my brother. But I am so thankful I get to live here, on the GC where life is great, and my business can thrive and grow. My goal for my business is to be able to provide a life of freedom. TO be able to travel back here, when I like, to see my family. To be able to travel to the UK. I want to be able to take my kids on many journeys and experience so many cultures to enrich their brains and open their eyes to a bigger picture. I want to go on adventures. iampoppy Designs is my ticket there, while doing what I am passionate about. What could be better?!! Do you have a goal? 18.01.2022 I recently bought this 6/0 detailing brush and I’m loving it! It doesn’t hold hardly any paint, which can be annoying, but it gets those fine lines of hair and around the eyes perfectly! 18.01.2022 So this is very exciting!!! I worked on this gorgeous shoot for The Acre Boomerang Farm, and it was featured today on their blog. This has long been a favoured venue of mine, since before I even started working in weddings, as I loved all the rustic buildings of the cattle sheds, the rainforest settings, and the large open grass areas. 14.01.2022 I’ve wanted to share this for ages!!! But it was a Christmas present to my mum, so I had to keep it a secret! This is my Granny. She passed away in 2019 at the Grand age of 95. She is greatly missed, and unfortunately it was just before she was due to fly out to Aus for her yearly migration. I wanted to capture her light, so kept the colours pale, natural and simple. I used a photo of her laughing from her 90th birthday. I added flowers as she loved her garden, and it match...ed her dress. When I had finished this... I loved it straight away. That doesn’t normally happen, I usually find faults. But for this one, I didn’t. I felt I nailed it, and it looks just like her... hope you love it mum. 13.01.2022 I love this photo, so much colour. One of my favourite parts of painting is using bright colours and finding out which ones mix well together, which blend, which look awful, and then creating different looks with my findings. Right now I’m in the process of creating heaps of rainbow patterns for a new pattern library. I chose rainbows as I wanted to have no limits with my colour palette to really see where my imagination took me. Is this something you’d love to do? 12.01.2022 I finally finished my Autumn Warrior today... I love her! : She is fierce, strong and vibrant. : I love orange hair, as you probably have guessed with my hair colour! I love the warm tones, the cool eyes and the pale skin of a redhead. ... : I think I should move onto another colour though... I’m thinking black for my next hair colour. 12.01.2022 Today I finally got this done! : I had been thinking about different tattoos for the past 15 years, and never settle on one design, trying to find the perfect one. : This was meant to be a henna design, which I had been drawing up. But last month, I changed my mind and drew this creation. ... : It’s a series of florals, obviously I love florals, but each flower represents a country I grew up in. There’s wildflowers for the UK, tulip for Holland, a Hibiscus for Malaysia and Gum blossom for Australia. I’ve also thrown in some Poppies because... well that’s my name! : I hadn’t expected to get it done today, but @krisolsentattoo had a last minute opening, and after nearly declining for a day when I was more prepared, I stopped that procrastination and just went for it. 11.01.2022 Today I started a new mural. : The kitchen window of this home looks out onto a bare concrete wall, so what better way to create some interest, than with a mural!! I’m painting this black cockatoo sitting in a gum tree surrounded by some gorgeous gum blossom. This is right up my alley! In an alley!! :... I’ve taken a different approach to each mural I’ve done. The first one I did a few years ago, I created a plan and roughly drew it on, adding to it as I painted. : The Star Wars one I drew on my iPad and transferred it to the wall with a projector. I then ‘coloured’ it all in. : The jungle wall is made up as I go on, with no real plan... it’s more of a free flow. : Then this one I had intended to transfer via the projector, but I ended up spending the day drawing it freehand from the pic on my phone. : Super happy with the first day. It’s looking great! I can’t wait to start adding the colour on Monday, omg... the blues in the bird are going to be stunning! I finished this late last night and delivered it to its new owner this morning, bright and early. Spooner (new owner) wanted me to paint his surf break in Broadbeach and add a few extra touches the represent the GoldCoast. We’ve got some beach babes, surfers, whales, seagulls and even a sneaky shark. And to add more interest, I added the curve of the coast showing Burl...eigh, currumbin, Cooly and Snapper.
