18.01.2022 We have a couple of rider spots now open for next Saturday’s one day training clinic at Violet Banks Westbury. Contact us for details or book through the website link. https://ianleightonhorsemanship.com//tas-violet-banks-wes/

16.01.2022 Okay, so here is the news. To many of us there’s no surprise to the fact that as we grow older bits of us start to deteriorate. After trying a ton of non surgical options I finally came to the conclusion that once the cartilage has worn completely away from a joint, or in my case, joints there is really nothing that will replace it without some surgical enhancement. ...Continue reading

16.01.2022 Ok a progress report. My toes are on the mend. Still nursing them but slowly they are improving. The surgery cuts are healing well but the bones inside take a few weeks to get over things. Here are some before and after shots for your viewing pleasure.

15.01.2022 It’s Liz here - just wanted to share an article I wrote a while back on riding tired or fatigued. I’ve just started back in the saddle after a few months recovering from an injury sustained riding when I was fatigued. It’s was that just one more time moment when I should have hopped off and resumed my schooling the next day. Many of us may have not ridden a lot over winter or through Covid, and we may not be as riding fit as we should be. Be mindful of regaining any lost finess and mental focus, and don’t ride tired. https://ianleightonhorsemanship.com/sleepless-in-the-saddl/

15.01.2022 A bit about why we are like we are.

15.01.2022 Thought for the day: In order to improve how I work with people I have been reading about different teaching styles and methods. One that stands out for me is the Feynman Technique. Basically to really know a subject you should be able to break down even the most complicated matter and simplify it. Try and structure it in your mind and simplify it in a way that might be understood by a child. ... Try and do this in your own words so that its not just rhetoric or the words of others. This is a way of confirming to yourself that you have a grasp of the subject. Making something sound so complicated that only a genius could understand it might be good for your ego but is a very ineffective way of conveying knowledge. Parroting the words of others is often used to convey the illusion of knowledge. This may prove that someone has a good memory for words and phrases but is only effective, in teaching, if those words and phrases are used in context. The Feynman Technique is as much about learning as it is about teaching. To know a subject you must be able to break it down and simplify it to the point where you can explain it to a child. Now, if you are working with an animal you must be able to break it down and simplify it to a point where you can help the animal learn it. You might consider that you only have actions to make your point. See more

15.01.2022 Thought for the day: Step outside your comfort zone. Do this a little at a time and in a controlled fashion. Don’t leave it until it happens by accident and you are not prepared for it. Set yourself a little challenge just outside your comfort zone every time you ride.

15.01.2022 We could have called this how to influence your horse with your seat and energy.

14.01.2022 We have a couple of one day clinics coming up here in Tas. Sat 12th September - "Violet Banks" Westbury Sat 3rd October - "Huntingfield" Howden ... Please our website for all information.

14.01.2022 How do you think about how things feel to your horse?

14.01.2022 Thought for the day: Having a goal or ambition is great but don't over-face yourself. Be realistic about what you might achieve successfully in every session, or minute, or moment. Give yourself time to learn. Your horse will reward you for it. #naturalhorsemanship

13.01.2022 Kicking off with some clinics/teaching days with a couple of one day ridden clinics here in Tasmania next month. "Huntingfield" Howden - Saturday 1 August 2020 (please note change of date) "Violet Banks" Westbury - Saturday 25th July 2020... Please note these days will be limited to 8 riders - spectators are welcome but must pre-register on-line through the website (spectator bookings can be done up to and including the day of the clinic). Bookings are now open on our website. At this stage, our interstate clinics are scheduled to resume in October. We are being very responsible with our planning, we've all seen that this crisis is not yet over and will be following state based guidance given. We will be monitoring this over the coming months, and rescheduling riders pre-booked into the new dates when confirmed. We thank our regular venues/hosts for their patience - it's been a tough time all round for many. In the meantime, stay safe, stay 1.5m apart, be responsible, abide by the Covid-19 safe protocols and most of all enjoy your horse time.

10.01.2022 Something I am working on and am conscious of. We often use the words going to work, going to train or going to school our horses, or we may use goi...ng for a ride, going trail riding or going to a competition. It’s important to remember what ever going we are doing, consistency is key to keeping our horse interested, focused, attentive, balanced, soft and all the other attributes we are developing in ourselves as riders. Often the term we use sets how we approach our ride and our intent. It is important that we train ourselves to ride in the same manner regardless of the environment. Try to be the same rider out of the arena you are in the arena. We can be enjoying a relaxed loose rein walk on a trail or in the arena and be working on our seat, balance and focus at the same time. We can be making small corrections as we ride along the beach just as well as on the sand in the arena. Where we ride shouldn’t change how we ride. If we are consistent and aware, they will soon become habits. Good training is not about drilling in the arena, it’s about being consistent on every ride. Make the same habit forming corrections consistently, no matter where you doing, soon you won’t have to think about them and your horse will appreciate the clarity every ride brings.
