16.01.2022 A wonderful woman ... A wonderful legacy!

16.01.2022 We are pleased to announce the winner of the 2019 Westfield Local Hero is Deirdre Hanna ... awarding the Ian Mavor Foundation $10,000. What a gift the Foundation desperatly needs! A massive thanks to everyone who voted for us ... we could not have done it without your support. Childrens author, palliative care pioneer and all-round humanitarian Deirdre Hanna has touched thousands of lives on the Gold Coast. In 1994, she and her late husband, Rev Dr Ian Mavor, started the Gol...d Coasts first Hospice, Hopewell Hospice. Next came the Paradise Kids charity to help children after a loved one passed away. We wanted the hospice to be a place of serenity and beauty where families could visit, where pets could come and stay, where children could sleep over, where bereaved loved ones could be comforted, and where the concept of hospitality for which the Gold Coast is renowned could be extended to those at the end stage of life, says Deirdre. She feels immensely privileged to be voted a Westfield Local Hero. We started out to care for a few dying people but have cared for over four thousand children and two thousand adults, and we are continually expanding to care for more in the community. One of Deirdres main projects is the creation of educational resources for grieving children, including storybooks that explain the grief process in childrens language. Another is the Paradise Kids Angel Choir, which builds confidence and self-esteem for the participants. Although in her seventies, she says she still has a lot to achieve. I want to continue writing and training future generations in compassionate community service. After her husband and co-founder died in the hospice they established, Deirdre started a foundation in his name to keep the charities going, and to honour his legacy of health education and spiritual care. The grant will help fund the foundation, says Deirdre Thank you to Westfield Coomera for this wonderful opportunity.

07.01.2022 Boxing Day. When English Aristocracy used to box up left over foods and give them to the poor. Our festive leftovers are the beautiful memories created by IMFs sponsorship of the Paradise Kids Angel Choirs 2019 season. The PK Angels raised close to $5000 for Paradise Kids whilst heralding good news and great joy across the Gold Coast filling the hearts of many with peace and love. IMF could not have sponsored this festive service in our community without the help of Westfield Coomera, Mayor Tom Tate and Cr Bob La Castra who all contributed financially to IMFs educational projects for children. As you prepare to enter in to a new year remember there are Angels everywhere, not looking as you expect they would they will catch you unawares and fill your heart in ways you never could imagine.
