23.01.2022 Awesome Online Content: Sir Kenelm Digby’s Vulgar Adventure Over the past few months our members have been busy sharing their expertise online, so today we are drawing your attention to Sir Kenelm Digby’s Vulgar Adventure, a presentation by Tom Dyson Reilly running through a 1623 account of a swordfight, examining such things as how it lines up with what we know of weaponry and garb of the era, and whether it can be believed at all. This presentation was part of our Virtua...l Atajo series, put together primarily for BSIS members, and recorded for the benefit of the wider Destreza community. The video can be seen on our youtube channel at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8kS5UC44ymA See more

23.01.2022 Last Thursday night (US time), Puck Curtis and Eric Myers of the Sacramento Sword School hosted a talk with Sean Reichman of BSIS about the structure of our school, our policies, and the background of how we came to be. https://youtu.be/MUn0KLD8Ifo

22.01.2022 While we finalise our event documents please review our equipment requirements for Carranza Cup 2020.

22.01.2022 If you've wanted to learn a bit more about us, but haven't had the chance to drop by on a Wednesday night, we'll be at the Queensland Knife Show in Ipswich in early April!

19.01.2022 You can WIN this little swashbuckler TONIGHT at BSIS. Don't be put off by a little rain - BSIS training is on tonight, and in honour of the forthcoming Valentines Day, we will be running a special competition as part of our 7pm footwork warm up. It's a bit silly, but lots of swordy fun.

19.01.2022 BSIS holds open practice at Keong Park in Stafford, Brisbane, on Saturday mornings. Here we feature Eddie and Sean having a light bout to close out the session. . . . #hemainbrisbane #thingstodoinstafford #historicalfencing #verdaderadestreza #esgrimahistórica #esgrimahistorica #rapierfencing #espadaropera

17.01.2022 New videos BSIS classes continue online. We have been taking full advantage of our talented and knowledgeable instructors and members, as over the past few weeks they have been taking BSIS classes online with a variety of workshops. We have been uploading these to our YouTube channel and here is an example: Lois Spangler takes us through three La Verdadera Destreza authors and their different approaches to sword and dagger. Lois is at the forefront of translating LVD tex...ts on offhand weapons, so she can offer a perspective available to few English-speaking practitioners. You can find the video here: https://youtu.be/KgiOOYM9HE8 A couple of links referred to in the video: Lois’ translation of Texedo dagger is here http://www.storytrade.net//destreza-sword-and-dagger-acco/ Lois’ patreon can be found here - https://www.patreon.com/LoisSpangler See more

13.01.2022 Hello, everyone -- even though we can't gather to practice together, we can still practice alone, or use this time for study! BSIS relies strongly on From the Page to the Practice, and right now you can get it for free!

12.01.2022 Reopening Update: We are working towards reopening when Stage 3 restrictions are implemented. The reopening date will be dependant on Education Qld and Stafford State School permissions. The earliest this will be possible is Wednesday 15th July.

11.01.2022 In Australia, people are allowed to exercise in open parks, especially if they observe social distancing. Fortunately, there's a weapon in the Iberian arsenal that, while not a sword, still definitely falls under our purview, and definitely keeps people away.

09.01.2022 Awesome Online Content: Five Offhands in Fifty Minutes Over the past few months our members have been busy sharing their expertise online, so today we are drawing your attention to Five Offhands in Fifty Minutes, a presentation by Sean Reichman running through Figueiredo’s instructions on the use of offhand weapons. This presentation was part of our Virtual Atajo series, put together primarily for BSIS members, and recorded for the benefit of the wider Destreza community.... The video can be seen on our youtube channel at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8rrHVnv8teY Lois Spangler’s translation of Figueiredo can be found at http://www.storytrade.net/ BSIS class notes on offhand weapons can be found in the Scholar class notes at http://www.bsis.club/student-resources/class-notes/

06.01.2022 BSIS teaches Iberian styles of fencing, focusing on la Verdadera Destreza -- a style whose documentation stretches from the late 16th century through to even the early 19th. Come visit us on any Wednesday from 7 to 9:30 PM at Stafford State School Hall! As always, first class is free!

06.01.2022 Temporary Closure In accordance with government’s Covid-19 response, we are closed until further notice. We thank the generosity of the Stafford State School and St Paul’s Uniting Church, both of which have granted us holds on our venue hire agreements. This means the temporary closure will come at no cost to the club or its members. For members who have paid quarterly, we will ensure that you get the full value of your payment once we return. We are considering the status... of Saturday Sparring and will advise of the decision as soon as possible. [edit: Saturday Sparring is also temporarily cancelled.] Stay safe, check in on your community, we will see you again as soon as we can.

06.01.2022 Walk like a pirate at training on Wednesday in preparation for the annual Talk Like a Pirate Day. Your first lesson is free, so come along and sail the Spanish Main, dodging cannonballs to claim the bounty!

05.01.2022 We're delighted to have so many beginners and novices tonight! Welcome (back)! . . . #thingstodoinstafford #thingstodobrisbane #verdaderadestreza #historicalfencing #hemainbrisbane #esgrimahistórica #esgrimahistorica #rapierfencing #espadaropera

05.01.2022 We are pleased to announce that Lois Spangler completed and passed her Provost assessment last night. Lois’ interpretation in combat of La Verdadera Destreza in the tradition of Carranza, Pacheco, and Texedo was soundly approved by her assessors, who included Heads and former Heads of Schools around Brisbane as well as BSIS’ lead trainers. Provost Lois had previously been assessed on her ability to teach, her contributions to the HEMA community, and her research work, the standard of which may be very hard to top for future candidates. If you wish to support Lois as she brings her awesome mix of editing and multilingual translating skills to bear on La Verdadera Destreza sources, consider her patreon at https://www.patreon.com/LoisSpangler .

03.01.2022 On Saturday, we had the enormous pleasure of doing a fencing demo before a showing of The Princess Bride in Lanham Park, Grange. Here we see Sharon, equipped with Bonetti's Defence, facing off against Jim, bringing his True Skill to bear! Sean marshals the fight. With many thanks to Jess for the video!
