24.01.2022 All screening tests have downsides. They may lead to overuse of intervention. And every time we use technology like this, we are undermining women’s own knowled...ge. The constant use of technology implies that our bodies aren’t capable of growing, birthing and feeding babies without a shed load of expensive machinery. And that’s not just true. I spent last week chatting with a wonderful, passionate group of midwives, obstetricians, doulas, childbirth educators, hypnobirthing teachers and other birth workers from around the world, and this came up - again - as a key theme that so many of us are experiencing. It's so important to keep sharing positive messages about the awesomeness of the female body. And to remind people that we did this for millions of years before the machines came along. If it hadn't worked, none of us would be here today. If you'd like more information, see www.sarawickham.com where I have a whole information hub on screening as well as more than 500 pages of information. #midwife #midwifery #doula #decisionmaking #decisions #whatsrightforme #book #bookstagram #childbirth #childbirtheducator #childbirtheducation #hypnobirthing #pregnancy #pregnancyyoga #women #birthrights #trustbirth See more

21.01.2022 #Repost @drsarawickham with @get_repost Delighted to see that the latest edition of my book, Vitamin K and the Newborn, has made it into @kghypnobirthing’s recommended reading list. .... Posted @withregram @kghypnobirthing Parents' Book List - Vitamin K and the Newborn . Vitamin K is another question that couples always ask about in a KGHypnobirthing class. It is another case when the question arises whether prophylactic treatment for everyone justifies the tiny risk. If you read this book you will be well informed and can make your own choice. . This book, by Dr Sara Wickham includes: What is Vitamin K? Why is it offered to all newborn babies? Does my baby need it? Should we agree to an injection, oral supplements or decide to do neither? Are there alternatives? Can we postpone the decision? Are some babies more at risk, and why? . Vitamin K has been routinely recommended for newborn babies for several decades, and many parents are happy for their child to be given this. But others want more information, have questions about why this intervention is offered or want to know whether there are downsides. This book guides the reader on a journey through the information, debate and research on this topic. It explains the issues and clarifies the different perspectives, drawing upon up-to-date midwifery and medical evidence and opinion and parents’ stories. #vitamink #sarawickham #drsarawickham #hypnobirth #KGHypnobirthing #katharinegraves #positivebirthexperiences #positivebirth #hypnobirthing #pregnancy @drsarawickham

20.01.2022 #Repost @lucyproud with @get_repost 3 weeks ago you entered our world little man. Your calm and serene energy as I carried you for over 42 weeks inspired your name Ocean Florence (ocean flow ) for you taught me all about surrender and you have brought another level of Love into our lives. My first birth was a natural breech, feet first birth and I have always regretted not having any pictures to show the momentous moment that might empower other women that they can too b...irth however they choose. This time round we got our dream wish and had another natural birth, this time in the water, in the serene sanctuary of home. I worked with such an incredible team of women, healers, midwives and spirit to manifest the vision I desired for this birth, and my body and baby Ocean heard the calling. I woke up on Monday morning sometime after 6am 3 weeks ago and said to my husband it’s time to fill the pool up, we called our amazing midwife @janineatibirth and in less than 1.5hrs little Ocean was born. They say the second time round is much easier and in my case this was true. I dedicated more time this pregnancy to visioning and meditating on my belief I could manifest a quick and calm birth, and while the ultimate lesson of birth is really all about rising to the challenges, drawing from our deepest strengths and surrendering to whatever birth brings and to what may be, I am ever grateful to have manifested the experience I wished for. Thank you @janineatibirth for reminding me of the power we women hold and Thank you to my beautiful husband @your_conscious_kitchen who captured the magical moments of this birth and beyond so I can hold the memories both in my eyes and in my heart . #birth #homebirth #midwivesmakeadifference #birthingbliss #waterbirth #manifestation #newsoul #family #love #bliss #motherhood See more

18.01.2022 Repost from @birthtimeworld NAIDOC week. Always Was Always Will Be. ... With the deepest respect and love and with the family’s blessings, we share these images of @teish_giirl and her family, Birthing on Country....Yuin Country. Words can’t describe the profound honour it was for @midwifejohunter and @jerushasutton to attend as midwife and photographer/videographer, along with beautiful second midwife @louisedavidmidwifelc As so eloquently written in the joint Birthing on Country position statement - Respecting individual choice is central to the BoC model. The identification of ‘risk factors’ is viewed through a cultural lens inclusive of the individual woman’s needs and cultural birthing practices, which enriches and informs their choices, assessment and planned care. YOU DID IT TEISHA, may this just be the beginning. Teisha’s words.... Birthing on Country and what a glorious day it was. BoC is the way our woman have always given birth to her child, on the lands of ancestors, ensuring a spiritual connection to the land for her baby. Yesterday we birthed our baby son Nullah Rungatahi Mulligamiriyara Toi out on country where my songlines sing many songs of the past, present and future, where the fresh water meets the salt water and the mountains meet the ocean. HAPPY NAIDOC WEEK MY PEOPLE MY PEOPLE . In our family we celebrate who we are and where we came from every single second of every day. Thank you to our private midwives who were also part of this amazing experience. #birthingoncountry #yuincountry #yuinbaby #wiradjuribaby #itstime #birthtime

15.01.2022 1)Learn about breastfeeding before you have a crying, hungry baby in your arms and doubt in your heart. Read a good book about basic breastfeeding -how milk i...s made, how to tell when your baby is hungry (look for signs such as putting his hand to his mouth, sucking noises and rooting towards your breasts), how to tell your baby is getting enough milk (tip: is he having heavy wet nappies? 13.01.2022 #Repost @drsarawickham with @get_repost Last year, a review published in the British Medical Journal showed that universal antenatal screening for the group B strep bacteria may cause more harm than good. The reviewers found that universal screening for group B strep "would have led to overtreatment of 138 583 (99.75%) women in labour."... Given that the treatment is giving intravenous (by drip) antibiotics during labour, which have side effects and mean that movement and options are limited, this is an important finding. If you’d like to know more about group B strep and your options, take a look at www.sarawickham.com/gbse That page has details of my book on this topic which helps parents, professionals and others to understand the issues and the evidence relating to the screening and prophylactic measures offered in the hope of preventing early-onset group B strep (EOGBS) disease and it also contains a link to my information hub, where you can read about this study and many others. #midwife #midwifery #doula #birthdoula #pregnant #birth #childbirth #duein2020 #drsarawickham #positivebirth #childbirtheducation #childbirtheducator #whatsrightforme #gbs #gbsexplained #birthoptions #getthefacts #youdoyou See more
11.01.2022 Recently I spent the longest time away from my little butter cup Frankie, up to now for work, I’ve had Frankie either in the van outside so I could run out to feed her or someone has brought her to me to feed or ive only been 7 hours away from her. Frankie still breastfeeds like a newborn, actually some of my clients babies feed less than Frankie does. So being 12 long hours away from her was really a colossal time apart for both of us, I pumped and she was offered my expre...ssed breast milk that she barely touched. What Frankie decided to attach to was my teaching aid newborn baby doll, she has begun to drag it around everywhere with her and falls asleep with it holding it very tight and will not let it go. We had bought her a few comfort toys none of which she has attached herself to, she won’t take the bottle hardly or a pacifier (maybe she’s heard me preaching the ten steps to successful breastfeeding ) however in my longest absence from her she has chosen a newborn baby to hold. I suppose we choose what things our children choose to attach to, or when they will choose to let them go. The beginnings of us as humans hanging on and letting go. Which things did your children attach themselves to? #comforter #comforters #breastfeedingjourney #breastfedbaby #workingmumlife See more
11.01.2022 The Golden Hour The first hour after birth is an incredibly special and important time. The new parents should be left to bond with their baby, with as littl...e medical intervention as is safe and practical. ‘The golden hour’ encompasses a set of evidence-based practices that can aid the baby’s physiological transition from the womb to life outside, whilst also strengthening the mother-newborn dyad. An undisturbed first hour has a number of benefits, including: neonatal thermoregulation, decreased stress levels in a woman and her newborn, improved mothernewborn bonding and increased rates and duration of breastfeeding (Neczypor and Holley, 2017). As midwives and birth workers we should do as much as we can to respect physiology and support ‘the golden hour’. So what should we consider? Immediate skin-to-skin contact, when safe to do so, with no separation between mother and baby where possible. Ensure families understand the benefits of delayed cord clamping - and aim to facilitate this where requested. Perform newborn assessments on the mother’s abdomen, if possible. Delay non-urgent tasks (weighing, dressing etc) within the first 60 minutes. Encourage baby-led breastfeeding initiation. Consider administering Vitamin-K (if opting for it) shortly after the first hour or whilst the baby is with the mother. If suturing is required, the baby should be able to stay with the mother in most circumstances. And what if it’s a c-section? Depending on the situation, you may still be able to facilitate a ‘golden hour’ - or at least elements of it. If immediate skin-to-skin is not medically viable, there are other ways you can help. Bring baby close to the birthing person; facilitate skin-to-skin between baby and the birth partner; and reassure the mother that skin-to-skin is beneficial at all times and there will be plenty of opportunity to bond with and enjoy her newborn. 05.01.2022 In Western cultures there is this idea that our babies and toddlers should sleep without being cuddled or breastfed. But why? Why would we expect our little bab...y or small toddler to sleep on their own when most of us would prefer to sleep next to someone even as adults? Humans need contact. And children need contact for basic human development. Having their needs met now leads to independence later on. ---- If you need some guidance or support with sleep and breastfeeding, check out my book, "Boobin' All Day...Boobin' All Night": https://www.amazon.com/Boobin-All-Day-Night-Br//1511669411 ---- Or for individualised support from The Milk Meg, Meg Nagle, IBCLC: www.themilkmeg.com/breastfeeding-consultations See more

03.01.2022 #Repost @janehardwickecollings with @get_repost One of the most important things to do in preparation for birth is to uncover the stories that we will be bringing to the experience. Mostly these are not in our conscious mind, and the clues can be found in our previous rites of passage and our Red Thread or Mother Line.... How do the women in your family give birth? It is critical in preparation for birth to connect with your innate body wisdom and with the baby. Doing this enables you to work with your inner knowing and the baby in her/his/their journey earthside.
01.01.2022 When we are nursing for the twelfth to twentieth something times overnight - these are my mantras - what is your nighttime nursing experiences? Frankie is almost permanently attached overnight #Repost @latchedla with @get_repost I’m sharing my top 10 lactation posts from 2020 & here’s #7. Make sure you’re following me @LatchedLA & turn on your notifications to see all 10. Nursing through the night is important! It’a a normal part of feeding for babies & toddlers.... Nursing through the night helps support babies’ growth & development. They take in a large portion of their milk over night. Having their nighttime needs met also supports their emotional health. Nursing through the night helps create & maintain a full milk supply. Our levels of prolactin (that’s the milk making hormone) are highest from midnight till about 6 AM. When we don’t remove milk for a long period of time, especially during that time frame, our bodies get the message that making milk isn’t a high priority. If we don’t remove milk at night, we often see a decrease in overall milk production. Sometimes that decrease is immediate, sometimes it’s weeks or even months later. Nursing through the night can help prevent SIDS. Breastfeeding promotes healthier sleep. This is because breastfed babies rouse from sleep regularly through the night, which decreases the risk of SIDS. If you are nursing through the night, even if it’s really hard some nights, know that you’re supporting your baby in an amazing way. And it won’t last forever. Promise! If you stopped nursing through the night, but want to get back to it, you can! You can start by sleeping near your baby so you can hear them when they wake & by keeping them unswaddled at night. Then nurse when you hear them rousing. So let’s normalize nursing through the night! How old is your little one & how many times did they wake to feed last night? 01.01.2022 We live in the Boob Nap and oh my it’s good to know we are not alone #Repost @georgiejhet with @get_repost Y O U ‘R E N O T A L O N E #Repost @marissathemilkmom ... Let's talk about boob naps. Honestly, after I had my first, she would wake up verrrrry shortly, like 30 minutes, after being asleep unless she was either latched, could easily latch and suckle back to sleep, or was touching my boob somehow. I thought I was doing something wrong. Weren't babies supposed to just happily go to sleep on their own? Wasn't I creating bad habits? I internally fought with myself for the first 3 or 4 months of her life. Instead of relishing in that sweet and fleeting time when she was so tiny and new. The truth is, this is beyond normal, and there are so many moms and babies doing this! (Contrary to what most articles, baby books, and "experts" might tell you.) Babies crave closeness, they think you two are still one. It is not anything you "did." It's biology. There are no "bad habits" or "bad sleep associations." Only ones that are no longer working for you, or ones that you and your baby don't like. Most babies nurse to sleep. It is not only about nutrition, but also nurture. Trust. Trust that your child will fall asleep on their own in their own time. It is developmental, and cannot be taught, forced, or trained. Rest assured, you and your baby are 100000% normal. If it's not a problem for you, it's not a problem. See more
