17.01.2022 As I reflect on the year that was, I realise I have a profound sense of gratitude . While the world may have turned upside down, I’m thankful that those I care most about are safe, loved and healthy . I know for many families, the same cannot be said. This past year has taught my family and I to slow down and re-focus our priorities. Thank-you to all my wonderful clients, it has been truly inspiring to hear your stories and watch you persevere on sometimes very diffic...ult journeys. Thank-you to my family and friends who have supported me as I started my private practice in the middle of a global pandemic! As we move into a new year and new possibilities, I think the thing we can all practice most is kindness. Be kind to others and be kind to yourself. May 2021 be happy and bright. Happy New Year! 15.01.2022 While I am absolutely thrilled that companies are dumping Pete Evans like the proverbial hot potato, it grinds my gears that it has taken him posting Nazi iconography to make it happen. Paleo Pete positioned himself firmly in the alternative lifestyle space with his love of all things paleo. He churned out numerous paleo books and offered paleo meal plans and programs, for a fee of course. He quickly drew criticism from medical professionals and dietitians for his promotion... of a paleo bone broth as an alternative to baby formula. Of particular concern was the quantity of Vitamin A in the broth at 4.5 times the upper recommended limit of Vitamin A for babies, there were concerns about long term consequences like liver issues and osteoporosis. Other concerns were raised about the broth meeting micronutrient needs and overloading the intestinal and renal systems of infants. Despite these valid concerns raised by qualified experts, Evans was adamant that the recipe would be published. Evans quickly went on to draw more criticism through comments like suggesting the paleo diet could prevent autism, that sunscreen was poisonous, fluoride a neurotoxin and that dairy removes calcium from bones. While Evans has been a vocal critic of organisations like Dietitians Australia and The Heart Foundation, he will not tolerate any criticism himself and quickly bans anyone with dissenting opinions. He revels in presenting himself as anti-establishment and has fallen further and further down the rabbit hole with wilder and wilder conspiracy theories. What started with a loyal tribe of paleo-followers has now attracted a dangerous cult-like following of more and more right-wing antagonists. While many have wondered about the state of Evans sanity, I see him as less kooky and more calculating. I mean, this is a man who could simultaneously promote a $15,000 lamp to eradicate Wuhan coronavirus while also denying the existence of Covid-19. While the decision of several companies to distance themselves from Pete Evans following his posting of the sonnenrad is absolutely the right one, I’m disappointed that he was able to progress this far. He has been posting dangerous and misleading advice for years now and as far as I am concerned, he ceased to be relevant the moment he ignored health advice and published his bone broth recipe. Sadly, many companies have continued to support Evans despite ongoing controversy. Will he fade from view now? I suspect given the support base he has amassed; not immediately. Time will only tell.
