19.01.2022 For 54-year-old Ipswich local Belinda Mace, receiving not just one but two cancer diagnoses in early 2020 came as a shock. Belinda, who was born deaf, went on to have a full hysterectomy and breast lumpectomy in the space of two weeks and was then referred to the nearby Icon Cancer Centre Springfield for 20 sessions of radiation therapy treatment, which she completed in September of this year. Throughout Belinda’s treatment, the team at Icon Springfield were committed to ensu...ring she could still access the latest in radiation therapy as a deaf patient, including the Deep Inspiration Breath Hold (DIBH) technique. Instead of using verbal communication through the intercom, the team developed a screen and light system as visual signals when to breathe in and out. For many deaf people, accessing healthcare services can be particularly challenging. Belinda attributes difficulties in communication for her delay in diagnosis, and was thankful to have her sister Karen with her at every appointment and treatment session to support her alongside interpreter services and her Icon care team. The Icon team heard that Rob was planning on wearing tropical Friday to his treatment to brighten up the day of fellow patients, so they all wore matching tropical outfits to surprise him. The little toy Rob is holding is a monkey named Hugs. He was a gift chosen by his niece who lives in NSW and has been unable to visit Rob during treatment. 03.01.2022 After being diagnosed with early stage prostate cancer, Icon Freemasons patient Andrew Dalton was told he was a good candidate for a new treatment known as focal brachytherapy. I had no worries at all, it just makes sense to treat the tumour itself and preserve the function of the prostate as much as possible. For Andrew, avoiding side effects and recovery periods from traditional treatments to the whole prostate was very important. Click below to read more:

03.01.2022 73-year-old Toodyay local Robert Thompson was first diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2019 after heading to the GP for his annual influenza vaccination. In a lucky turn of events, Robert saw a new doctor who ran a routine blood test and found his PSA levels were high at 7.5. As Robert’s cancer was very small and localised in his prostate, he was able to receive stereotactic radiation therapy treatment at Icon Cancer Centre Midland. Stereotactic radiation therapy delivers high... doses of radiation precisely to the prostate ensuring safe and effective treatment directly to the tumour, while minimising radiation dose to surrounding healthy organs and tissue. It also reduces the overall treatment time to one and a half weeks, which can be a great benefit for many rural cancer patients, where accessing treatment can be emotionally and physically draining. By receiving five sessions of this shorter course radiation therapy treatment on his prostate, Robert was also able to save more than 40 hours and 2,900km in travel and had the choice of staying in the comfort of his own home with his family, rather than in other accommodation options.
