Avoidable causes include: ... - Diabetic eye disease - Glaucoma - Macular Degeneration Reversible causes include: - Cataracts - Refractive error (needing glasses) Diabetes is the world’s leading cause of preventable blindness - if you or a loved one are affected by diabetes, your single best course of action to prevent blindness is to keep your blood sugar under strict control. Talk to your GP and a diabetes educator about strategies including medication, diet and exercise. Glaucoma has been linked to gut health. If you’re at risk (risk factors include family history, short sight, diabetes and sleep apnoea) why not take a positive step by looking after your gut health? Strategies include more dietary fibre, getting outside more, probiotics, taking charge of stress levels and getting more regular sleep. Annual eye examinations are crucial. Macular degeneration - the further away our 50th birthdays become, the more of our peers have this devastating disease. If you’d like to hit your 80s and NOT be one of the 28% of your peers with MD, take these steps now: adopt a Mediterranean diet, go for a walk for 30 minutes per day, keep the sun out of your eyes and don’t smoke. Cataracts - almost everybody will get a cataract. These days they’re almost good news, because the surgery is elegant, quick and effective, and if you wear specs, you won’t need to rely on them anywhere near as much after the surgery. If you have cataracts, have them checked every 12 months, and double-check that your private health insurance policy still covers you for their eventual removal. Refractive error - billions of people worldwide wear specs or contact lenses. If you’ve been putting up with sub-par vision, it’s time to embrace the freedom that great eyesight can give you. Make sure you have your eyes checked every 2 years if you’re under 65, and every 12 months after your 65th birthday. 03.01.2022 A fortuitous discoverywhen I burned my fingertips by picking up a pan that was fresh out of the oven, my better half went to grab some Aloe Vera from the garden. Instant. Relief. I was so impressed I started checking to see whether anyone had looked into it for eyes. They had, the drops are called Oculocin Propo, and I’ve been trialling them on hard-to-help eyes ever since.... Some patients find them no more helpful than other drops, while for some they’ve been life-changing. One patient, an elderly gentleman with a mysterious eye ulcer that hadn’t healed for two years no matter what anybody did, was over the moon - he no longer had to pad one eye closed to watch the sports on TV.
