21.01.2022 NEED A CAR? NATIONAL CAR SHORTAGE SPARKS SPIKE IN FAKE CAR SALES ADVERTISEMENTS We know finding a new or used car for sale is particularly tough in this market, but please be careful as many of our clients are being caught out in fake car scams. Our National Case Management Centre has dealt with multiple complaints in one day from people lured into buying a car from sites like Facebook Marketplace.... Not only are the clients losing money putting down deposits on cars that don’t exist, they’re also required to provide scanned copies of identity documents to complete the purchase. These documents, which can include driver licence, passports and utility bills, are often used to open an account on various cryptocurrency trading platforms in the client’s name. Here’s an easy guide to spot a fake car advertisement from the real deal: The car is offered for sale below market value. The person selling the car is often listed as being in the military. The seller asks to communicate with the client directly via email or WhatsApp, instead of through Facebook messaging. Often the scammer will place their preferred contact email over one of the advertisement photographs. They’re in a hurry to sell and will pressure you for a quick transaction. You can always do a reverse image check on the photos listed with advertisements to determine whether they’ve been used elsewhere. Remember, do your research first and ask to speak to the seller in person.

19.01.2022 Blackmailed for "cheating": Some University students have more to worry about than their exam results. Thousands of students across the country are waiting anxiously for their final exam results. Others have bigger worries on their hands. They’re being blackmailed by scammers they paid to help with their studies. IDCARE’s National Case Management Centre has being chatting to students who thought they were buying help for their assignments, but ended up being threatened b...y the scammers that a lawyer will contact their university and spill the beans. In at least one case, the client is adamant he never asked the site to cheat for him, but simply help. However, the scammers are threatening the worst, unless the client pays up. The scammers also have the student’s important identity documents which can be further compromised. Our tip: Do your own exam and write your own assignments. Look for tutoring from recognised providers (they’re normally offered at your uni!).

18.01.2022 INTRODUCING IDCARE AUDIO SEGMENTS, WHERE OUR CLIENTS SHARE THEIR STORIES It's one thing to read about how a person gets caught out in a scam, it's another altogether to listen to the emotion in their voice as they explain how it unfolded. This is why IDCARE is introducing audio segments and podcasts, where you can hear our clients explain in their own words what happened.... They're real, raw and unscripted. Take a listen as a client we will call Luke explains how the 'warrant for your arrest' phishing scam works. It includes the automated message from the scammer.

13.01.2022 Lost your wallet (or purse)? There is a lot more to worry about than the money that may have been inside. In October, 82% of people to report a loss or theft of their wallet to IDCARE also experienced crimes in their name. Read what you can do to stay safe in the latest edition of our newsletter, the Cyber Sushi.

12.01.2022 BLACK FRIDAY SALES AND THE AMAZON PRIME SCAM IDCARE analysts have noticed a spike in the number of people contacting our National Case Management Centre after being caught out in a scam involving streaming services, particularly Amazon Prime. The scammers methodology seems to work like this:... * Clients receive an automated telephone message from "Amazon Prime" claiming their Amazon Prime trial period has expired. * Clients are instructed to "dial 1" to cancel the trail period and be reimbursed for the first month's payment. * Clients are then transferred to a operator who offers to help with the refund and the clients are instructed to allow remote access to their computer to help facilitate this. This kind of scam methodology isn't new, but scammers are taking advantage of the fact many have signed up to streaming services during the pandemic. A similar version of the scam has been noted in the United Kingdom and is being linked to one of the biggest shopping days of the year, the Black Friday sales. Here's our tip for the weekend: Never allow someone remote access unless you know EXACTLY who they are. And if they've called you claiming to be a legitimate organisation or business, put the phone down and phone the listed number for the organisation or business back.

04.01.2022 A sophisticated overseas scam network is stealing thousands from eager Australian travellers looking to get on the road with a caravan. In the last two months, IDCARE has liaised with at least 10 clients who have lost thousands thinking they are buying a caravan from website called acecaravancamper(dot)com The website lists a Brisbane phone number and a Victorian address. It even has photos of its 'team'. However, a reverse image search of the team member photos (you can do ...this at tineye.com/) shows the salespeople aren't even based in Australia. The person listed in "accounting" is actually an Associate Professor in Houston, Texas. The Northern Territory Consumer Affairs has seen three other similar scam networks since January and Acting Deputy Commissioner, Ann Holland, believes the same group is behind them. When one website is shut down, another opens. Take a listen as IDCARE's founder and managing director, Professor David Lacey, chats to ABC Melbourne's Libbi Gorr about the scam.

03.01.2022 Thank you ABC News for sharing this important story about the caravan scam.
