14.01.2022 Reading paper. Most students find paragraph matching and matching information questions quite tricky. Try and do these questions last, they are not in chronological order and are much easier to do once you have some understanding of the text.

09.01.2022 In the writing exam, Coherence and Cohesion is worth 25% of the mark on one task. Most students (and teachers) believe this only involves learning lists of linking expressions like: furthermore, moreover, thus, consequently etc. These are often over-used by students or used inaccurately. In fact, they are used infrequently by native speakers. Examiners are looking for far more than these in a band 7.0+ essay. Cohesion involves: the use of pronouns, avoiding repetition by usin...g synonyms and the appropriate repetition of technical phrases. Coherence is the linking of ideas in a logical way. Try these tips: 1) use phrases instead of individual linking words to link sentences. (This has come about because...., This is due to..., In connection with this, This can be exemplified by....etc). Notice all of these phrases contain a pronoun which links back to an idea already mentioned. This is good referencing. 2) Read the sentence you have just written and then focus on the opening of your next sentence. 3) Think of synonyms of key vocabulary in a question. If this is tricky, then think of different word forms to use. Instead of using the noun 'production' (which might be in the question), be flexible and use the verb 'produced', the adjective 'productive', the adverb 'productively' etc. This will not only help your cohesion and coherence score but also your vocabulary score too. 4) Include clear topic sentences which relate directly back to the question. More examples of natural structural language coming soon.
