14.01.2022 Impact of Engineering Interfaces in Bridge Design and Major Infrastructure Projects by Dr. David Jefferson Part 2: Question and Answers... Bridge design is challenging, often involving multiple disciplines making decisions that influence the final structure as designs develop. The interface between engineering disciplines and the impact of their decisions on the final design is often not well understood, which presents a significant risk for both designers and contractors. The complexity of the interfaces may be vastly different depending on the scope of works, method of construction, the form of contract and the design program. In David’s presentation, he will talk about bridge behaviour, typical structural forms and the measures that can be adopted to achieve optimum structural performance that is compatible with the bridges’ function. He will then present several case histories where significant structural challenges have been overcome while also addressing the functional requirements. These case studies include a road viaduct over floodplains, a rail viaduct supporting directly fixed rail track and a cable stay bridge constructed over a busy road intersection. David’s presentation will demonstrate how a balanced approach to addressing engineering interfaces can be used to reach an optimum structural solution.

13.01.2022 Microwave wireless power transmission: Techniques and some future applications by Dr Ranjith Liyanapathirana, BScEng(Hons),MEng,PhD, SMIEEE, Senior MACS, Senior Lecturer, Western Sydney University At Engineers Australia (8 Thomas St, Chatswood NSW 2067), 6:30 pm onwards In this talk, an overview of the effective techniques for wireless power transmission (WPT) currently being utilised will be presented. Short-, medium- and long-range WPT technologies based on inductive cou...pling and radio-frequency (RF) principles will be outlined. With the recent release of wirelessly rechargeable mobile phones, it is expected that the use of Qi-standard rechargeable platforms in the consumer electronics market will rapidly expand. After describing the historical development of WPT technologies and techniques, Dr Ranjith will focus on some recent advances in microwave wireless power transmission for implantable devices and infrastructure health monitoring (IHM) applications. 10.01.2022 Cochlear Modelling: Future Directions" by Prof E. Ambikairajah The human cochlea is a critical part of the human auditory system, serving as the main sensory organ that transforms the acoustic signal to a mechanical movement and thereafter to a neural signal. The cochlea is unique and has some amazing characteristics, including very fine frequency resolution, wide dynamic range and rapid adaptability to different input sounds levels. Its importance as a spectrum analyser has... been recognised in the design of cochlea implants and speech and speaker recognition systems. In this presentation, cochlear modelling will be discussed from simple through to more advanced cochlear filter models. The application of these models to key speech processing systems, and the evolution of their design, will then be explained. Future approaches to cochlear models in a deep learning paradigm will be discussed, including building an active cochlear model. #IESL #IESLNSWChapter #UNSW #Cochlear #Engineering #ElectricalEngineering #PublicLecture
