23.01.2022 The NSW Treasurer’s stubborn insistence on suppressing the wages of nurses, paramedics, teachers, cleaners, contact tracers and other public sector workers will weaken economic demand and slow the economic recovery. #cutshurteverybody #nswbudget

23.01.2022 This is excellent! A model worthy of being replicated Australia wide "Salary increases of up to 31 per cent for kindergarten teachers and 27 per cent for educators and activity group leaders will for the first time ensure parity between Victoria’s 7000 kindergarten workers and 46,500 public school teachers at every pay level. Early Childhood Minister Ingrid Stitt said the new agreement, which will cover more than 900 kindergartens, 44 long daycare centres and 22 local governm...ent areas, was part of a concerted effort to invest in early childhood educators and teachers." https://www.theage.com.au//best-paid-victorian-kinder-teac

22.01.2022 In a year that’s seen violence against women escalate dramatically due to the COVID-19 pandemic, observing International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women has never been more urgent. This year’s theme, ‘Orange the World: Fund, Prevent, Respond, Collect!’ is tied in with 16 Days of Activism, where groups across the world will demonstrate concrete action against gender-based violence. The IEU is committed to working to providing safe workplaces that can play a ...role in eradicating domestic violence. Only 1 in 3 workplaces have adopted paid domestic violence leave for their employees. A significant win in part of the IEU's latest Enterprise Agreement for members in Catholic Systemic schools was the new inclusion of 10 days paid domestic violence leave for all employees. That's 33,000 more people who now have this vital protection against domestic violence, which will allow those who need it the time and opportunity to find emergency housing, attend legal appointments and find stability when their lives have been shaken by domestic violence. We need all workplaces to adopt paid domestic violence leave.

20.01.2022 The IEU joined with unions from across all industries yesterday to condemn the unacceptable decision to cut the pay increases of the state's hundreds of thousands of public sector workers, essential workers who have kept the state running during this tumultuous time. As the state's largest employer, the downward pressure on wages from this disgraceful decision will ripple out into the broader community and see families and households across the state feeling the strain under ...inadequate salary increases for years to come. As the union continues to bargain for our members in independent schools, we are already seeing the negative effect of this policy of austerity. #cutshurteverybody #stopthefreeze Unions NSW

19.01.2022 Pay parity for early childhood teachers is not a revolutionary concept Early childhood teachers in NSW are impatiently awaiting a commitment from the NSW Premier, Gladys Berejiklian, and Minister for Education and Early Childhood Learning, Sarah Mitchell, to match the pay parity agreement announced today by the Victorian government. The Victorian announcement will see early childhood teachers finally paid the same rate as school teachers, the correct rate for their equivalent... and often identical teaching qualifications. Pay parity isn’t a revolutionary concept, said Independent Education Union of Australia NSW/ACT Branch Secretary, Mark Northam. Early childhood teachers and educators have been undervalued for too long. The IEU is calling on the NSW Premier to follow the Victorian government’s lead by ensuring improved funding leads directly to improved salaries for the sector. In particular, university degree qualified early childhood teachers should be paid the same as teachers in schools. Such a commitment would provide an investment in communities across the entire state that will pay dividends for generations to come. Teachers are teachers, regardless of whether their workplace is an early childhood centre, a preschool, primary school or high school, said Northam. Our members don’t teach for the income, they teach for the outcome. They know they could find work in a primary school and increase the size of their pay cheque overnight, but a love of the work and a commitment to preparing the minds of our nation’s youngest people is what has kept them coming back day after day. The pandemic has shown them to be essential workers in every sense. Quality early childhood education is fundamental to supporting and promoting early childhood development. Pay parity is essential to attracting and retaining a quality workforce, safeguarding into the future the world-standard early childhood education and care that Australian families have come to rely on. The IEU has been running a lengthy campaign in pursuit of improved pay for early childhood teachers, including complex proceedings before the Fair Work Commission. The union is awaiting the outcome of this landmark case. It’s time for governments to step up, acknowledge and address the chronic underpayment and underfunding that plagues this sector, said Northam. Time and again, in study after study, report after report, the social and economic case for a properly funded and professional early childhood education and care sector has been proven. Without action, NSW and Australia risk being left behind. https://bit.ly/33loag5

18.01.2022 We love to see IEU member and St Canice's Primary, Katoomba, Principal Miriam Meaney getting profiled in the Sydney Morning Herald, talking about her teaching career and the importance of lifelong learning This quote from her sums up beautifully the role of a teacher and education leader, and embodies the values of unionism and community solidarity perfectly. "My focus daily is on getting to know my community and building relationships with them.... Typically, I spend some time each day in the classrooms in my school, working alongside teachers, getting to know our students, how they learn and supporting them in being the best learners they can be." https://www.smh.com.au//willingness-to-learn-is-the-key-to

17.01.2022 Congratulations to the thousands of members in Catholic Systemic schools who voted in favour of a new Enterprise Agreement the other week! A fantastic 98% of votes went in favour of the union endorsed deal, that will secure 2.3% pay rises for next year as well as make meaningful impacts on your accreditation and entitlements! 2020 has been a turbulent year, even before the additional disruption of negotiations proceedings. But with your continued effort and engagement, we hav...e managed to secure signigificant victories that will stand you in good stead in the years to come! In addition to securing 2.5% for 2020, with backpay,a dn 2.3% for 2021, the union has also managed to establish a strong collaborative working party comprised of IEU Support Staff members as we continue to negotiate for a recalibration of salaries for support staff members to match those awarded to support staff working in state schools. Watch this space, because this campaign is just getting started! We're stronger together, congratulations to everyone involved! In solidarity, IEUA NSW/ACT Branch

13.01.2022 We Won't Wait: 16 Days of Action launch Unions NSW would like to invite you to the online launch of our 16 Days of Action for the Elimination of Violence against Women and the new workplace resource Working From Home Isn’t Safe When Home Isn’t Safe: How to respond to family & domestic violence in home-based workplaces. For many people experiencing family violence their workplace is the only safe place. It is a space where arrangements can be safely made to leave family viol...ence. Working from home has now made workplaces unsafe for many workers. Working From Home Isn’t Safe When Home Isn’t Safe: How to respond to family & domestic violence in home-based workplaces has been developed by the Rape and Domestic Violence Service in conjunction with the Australian Services Union, NSW and ACTU Branch to assist unions and employers address the health and safety issues associated with workers working from home and experiencing family and domestic violence. 10.01.2022 Congratulations to all of the year 12 students in NSW who sat their final HSC exams this week, a particular round of applause to the teachers and support staff who have helped guide them through this incredibly difficult year, and the 12 years of schooling that has led up to this moment. The dedication and professionalism on display, throughout the full spectrum of education, is nothing short of astounding and if teaching were treated like other professions you would all be c...ashing in bumper bonuses now in time for Christmas. But, as we well know, education and training is not awarded the financial and social status it is truly due. In this article for The New Daily, Michael Pascoe lays out the case of systematic undervaluation in Australian education policy, shrouded in a miasma of empty announcements and hollow words. "But in the way of so many government announceables, the boots on the ground are yet to leave an imprint. That’s not surprising, given the government’s overall attitude to education a distaste for liberal education, a hatred of education unions, a fondness of private providers never mind the numerous rorts that have resulted, and a desire for skills education to be a servant of unrealistic industry demands for job ready cheap labour."

07.01.2022 Known voting issue affecting support staff in Diocese of Wagga Wagga The union has been made aware that at least 109 support staff in the Catholic Education Diocese of Wagga Wagga have been incorrectly left off the list to vote on the new Catholic Systemic Schools Enterprise Agreement 2020. The union has identified the issue, and the issue has been raised with the diocesan leadership for rectification.... All affected staff should now be able to vote. If you have still not received your voting information and believe you are eligible to participate, or are having any difficulties participating in the vote, please contact the Returning Officer, Richard Kidd, at the Australian Election Company immediately on FreeCall 1800 224 420 or by email at [email protected]. If you are unable to resolve an issue after contacting the Australian Election Company, please contact the union. We will do everything within our power to help you and make sure your vote is cast and your voice is heard. The union is recommending to all our members in Catholic Systemic schools, teachers and support staff, to vote ‘YES’ for the proposed Enterprise Agreement. Please ensure you cast your vote in the ballot on the EA and encourage your colleagues to do the same. A high turnout in the ballot assists the approval process of the EA in the Fair Work Commission and secures these benefits. The ballot will close at 5pm this Friday.
