25.01.2022 To Underwood Members As you’ve no doubt heard the Queensland Government has advised that businesses in Greater Brisbane must (at this stage) close from today. This closure and membership hold will be in place from: Friday 8th January 2021 at 12pm Monday 11th January 2021 at 6pm. (unless advised differently from Queensland Health) While there have been no cases in the club we are responding to the Government instruction, and taking additional precautionary measures as we wan...t to do the very best for you, our Underwood community. 19.01.2022 QUESTION OF THE WEEK: "HOW DO I GET OVER MY FEAR OF TALKING TO PEOPLE AND MAKING FRIENDS AT THE GYM?" ------ Ahhhh... probably the question that is thought by the most gym-goers, but never actually asked! Well today folks, let's face that awkward, yucky feeling of attempting to be a social being!... Let's break it down to 5 easy things you can try to break the ice with other members! 1. Remember everyone is more focused on how they look and act than on you! I promise! Take a breathe and do you! Don't worry about what you are wearing, what you look like doing exercises, or what others think of you. If they look, it's of admiration :D 2. Befriend the gym staff. We are nice people. And like to talk. A LOT. We also know heaps of members, which means we might know a crew of awesome people you'd get along with! But honestly, everyone here is awesome 3. Go to the gym more often (then you'll get to know the regulars at the time you go!), and participate in our events (weekly challenges, group classes, nights out and social events!). We have heaps on for you to do, so ask a staff member if you're keen on more information on club events! 4. SMILE and SAY HI! From experience, it's the small gestures that make the difference. That smile may lead to a hello, then hello to a question about a workout or exercise, then a question to a conversation! Try giving someone a compliment? That is sure to break the ice! 5. Skip the headphones. Say goodbye to technology and hello to the real-world. Headphones are the gym-official saying of "I don't want you to talk to me"... like am I right? Try a session without them and immerse yourself in the atmosphere of the club! I promise our music is pumpin' Hope this helps! :)
18.01.2022 QUESTION OF THE WEEK! "What foods should I eat pre and post workout?" ---- Getting your nutrition plan right will help you optimise each training session and ultimately help you to reach your fitness goals. Knowing what to eat, and when to eat, before and after a workout can be a bit confusing - while workout nutrition will completely depend on the type of workout you are doing and the body composition goals you have in place, the basic principles remain the same.... PRE- WORKOUT - Fuel your body 1-3hrs before your workout - Food should contain both protein and carbs. Carbs are the fuel, while protein is what rebuilds and repairs Examples include: > Greek yoghurt and Banana > Piece of toast and boiled egg > Smoothie with oats > Apple with peanut butter > Rice cakes with almond butter > Pasta with tomato based sauce > Handful of nuts and raisins > Muesli bar POST WORKOUT - Post-workout nutrition should focus on refilling energy storages and provide enough protein to prevent muscle protein breakdown and stimulate muscle synthesis. - Essentially, a balanced main meal that contains protein, healthy fats and a portion of carbs will replenish your glycogen stores and aid muscle growth and repair. - Try to eat ideally 30-60 minutes after a workout. Examples include: > Chocolate milk > Grilled chicken with roasted veggies > Tuna salad sandwich on wholegrain bread > Spinach and egg whites omelette > Hummus and pita bread > Salmon with brown rice and sweet potato > Oatmeal, whey protein, banana and almonds > 2 hard boiled eggs on toast > Protein rich green smoothie

17.01.2022 Tip 1 for managing stress: Meditation . Meditation is a simple and effective way to relieve and manage stress. Even just a few minutes each day can help restore calm. Practicing meditation can also build a long lasting resilience to stress and transform the way you handle it in your day to day life.... Whenever you’re feeling overwhelmed, we recommend removing yourself from the situation that’s making you feel this way, finding a quiet place and practicing basic meditation. This includes sitting in a comfortable position with neutral spine and gently closing your eyes. Then all you need to do is clear your mind and focus on your breathing It’s as simple as that! Give it a go next time you’re under stress.

15.01.2022 Tip 3 for managing stress: Music Music has a connection to our emotions like no other and can be very effective in managing stress! It all comes down to what you're listening to. Classical music has been found to have a positive psychological affect by lowering our heart rate, blood pressure and decreasing levels of stress hormones in our body. ... On top of this, music can also act as a distraction which can aid in meditation and prevent the mind from wandering to more stressful things. Singing or shouting along to music can also be a great release of tension. 13.01.2022 Tip 4 for managing stress: Hobbies Hobbies have such a massive effect on your mind and body. It has been found that conducting enjoyable activities during leisure time is associated with lower blood pressure, lower levels of stress hormones and a more positive mental state. No matter your preference of hobbies whether it be cooking, arts, sport or something completely different, ... it all has a fantastic effect on your mind and body. Finding a hobby that suits you can be very hard but here's a great tip to find what's right for you. Try and transform what you already enjoy into a hobby. Do you enjoy spending time with your furry friend? Try volunteering with a rescue organisation. Love watching sport? Give it a go yourself! You'll be doing something you already enjoy, you just need to figure out how to build off those activities!
13.01.2022 QUESTION OF THE WEEK! "How do I stay motivated with training?!" ---- Let's face it, we all have those days where we are like... "uh... why am I even at the gym. This sucks. I'm bored. I'm not even motivated to stand up." Relatable/10 right?... It's okay to have those days! There's a variety of reasons why you can feel unmotivated - so here's 5 simple things you can do to try get back on track! 1. Find the source of your "unmotivation" - are you tired? Stressed? Had a massive workout the day before? Or doing the same workout routine you have for the last 4 weeks? Maybe its time to have a few days off, take a break, reset some goals/targets and let your body fully recover :) 2. Identify your "WHY?" Why are you training? Why do you wake up at 5am everyday? Why did you originally join? What are your goals and targets? Maybe its time to reflect and bring back thay spark in your fitness goals! --> Remember that not all goals have to be big! Set something simple, such as training for 30mins x 3 days a week. Don't set a big expectation - just move :) 3. Get a Personal Trainer! It these guys job to make you move and help you find your motivation to hit the gym! They have a range of ideas and tips to suit your interests :) 4. Find a gym buddy! There's nothing that keeps you more accountable than someone knocking at your door at 5:30am to hit the gym! This also makes working out more fun, and you will probably learn alot more too! Set a common goal and smash it! 5. Join a group class/6 week challenge! We have plenty coming up early next year so definitely keep an eye out! This gives you a set day, time and task to complete - and we keep you accountable to it! Also classes and challenges are so fun to do! :P #gymmotivation
