21.01.2022 My 3 Day Experience without Technology and Camping with my Girls! Carting water, making fires, dealing with the sun and shade, Tick check on the family, then repeat. All sounds too hard, it wasn’t really, the kids had a ball with a community of other children to play with as a dozen likeminded families joined us.... Didn’t think about my mobile phone until I wanted to document a memory, that was interesting. We did bring our camera with tripod, very handy. Walking around barefoot for the whole day, cooling off in a watering hole and being put in a situation where you can’t hide behind your technology was so good for the soul. My phone which I do use as a kindle was replaced by a book!! Everyone was asked to contribute in some little way over the course of the weekend, mine was child minding and telling stories and acting like a clown which the kids enjoyed!! Making Damper had its challenges! Overall, the experience of life without technology for 3 days was awesome because it brought me back to what was important, food preparation, boiling enough water for drinking, shelter, contributing, laughter, listening and lots of patience and it was one of the best ways to RESET!! Carpe Diem!!

20.01.2022 The Technology Free Taster 1-hour digital detox Getting used to tech-free times, is very much like a muscle. The more you do it the easier and inherently the likely hood a new and beneficial habit will form from it. In this technological life it’s obvious that apart from deciding to venture off-line permanently, technology for most people will become more and more part of life, from having your ... milk ordered for your automatically by your smart fridge, too having Alexa (voice technology) for the home, which delivers instant answers, from the music you want to hear to a weather update, ordering take-out and Uber, to powering your smart phone. No phone calls required, no cables to search for. This is all coming, this will be the norm for our children. So little natural habits such as a 1-hour detox from technology will also be the norm. It’s so important we begin to instill practices such as these into our children. After 15 years of the internet fluffing around, it has finally matured into a juggernaut. Give yourself the gift of an hour a day every weekend and do something NATURAL. BTW: The Tech-Free Taster for those of you still reading (I love you), is as follows. Prep: Plan 1 hour unplugged, turn off your phone and place in the furthest cupboard or draw in your home. Method: Use your intention to do something different alone or together with another human!! I dare you!! Did you find this useful and have you any ideas on what you could do naturally for an hour?

20.01.2022 What is Nomophobia (No Mobile Phone Phobia) A Rising trend in Adolescents! Simply put, it’s the fear of being without your mobile phone, continuously checking your phone for missed calls, texts, Social and emails. Nomophobia is a modern phobia, originating from the increased reliance on technology and concern over what might happen if you suddenly couldn’t access needed information.... Recent studies in Switzerland have found people under the age of 18 are more at risk to addictive-type behaviours. Most likely due to poor impulse control related to their developing frontal lobe. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4712764/ Possible emotional symptoms include FOMO, anxiety if you briefly can’t locate your phone, irritation when you can’t check your phone. And physical symptoms include, rapid heart rate, shallow breathing, tightness in your chest and sweating. Finding Balance: Technology and the way we use it, is really an expression of ourselves and our emotional state. So, understanding that a widespread cultural change is occurring in our children and having empathy with that is key. Finally, looking at self-esteem and what it means to be bored and the gift in that too!

18.01.2022 It’s not about the mobile phone! From my experience working with Clients wanting to shift a belief/pain, most people think they know what they want until we dig deeper to reveal what they need. This got me thinking about excessive technology use in children and whether it was the technology that was the issue or is it something deeper?... Should the focus be on sexting, screen time, cyber bulling, violent computer games, the likes on social media and the dopamine hit received form the likes, children on average spending more than 3 hours on the devices per day, the list goes on and on, or something else? Or can we look at other avenues like practical guides for parents to help their children, looking at why they feel the need to fill a void and be on these handheld devises for extended periods of time. Seriously, how do we raise these issues with our children? What’s the right thing to say to get through to them? Do I say, be good and that cover’s it? What conversation can we have that won’t end in eyes being rolled and shoulders shrugging? If you are like me, I’m attempting to teach my children a balanced life with technology, having never been taught any of this by my parents because handheld devices weren’t invented back then. So, the question remains, where is this instruction book on all of these questions? I have made it my mission to find the answer’s and have begun conducting interviews with parents from all over Australia on this very topic. So now Sunny Coasters it’s your turn. I’m interviewing parents from all over the Sunshine to find answers to these questions. I’d love to interview parents that have concerns regarding excessive technology use in children.
