14.01.2022 Native American girl stroking a cougar is a work that looks at the depth of a relationship that was developed over the ages between the native tribes of the Americas and the various creatures that shared its lands. The cougar was observed by the natives and had been attributed to many different powers and virtues. The solitary feline represented many virtues including stealth, focus and a determination which can all be observed while it's hunting. Gentleness was also among the attributes assigned to this magnificent creature seen as a caring and patient parent to its cubs. Visit my profile to see more @iggypero_design
12.01.2022 The great wave and the waka is a painting based on the world-renowned woodblock print created by the great Japanese artist and printmaker Hokusai. There are a few cultural aspects that tie the Japanese culture with that of the Aotearoa like the fearless martial code of both the Japanese Samurai and the Maori warriors as well as the mighty volcanoes that overlook and dominate the landscapes around them. Both nations are accustomed to frequent earthquakes that occur regularly w...hich are of an integral part of their existence in their lands. They are both island nations which are unique in the fact that they are the first two places to witness the rising sun in the world. Like Hokusai’s print which depicts the majestic Mt Fuji in the background, this painting depicts the mighty Mt Taranaki situated on the west coast of New Zealand’s north island. The image captures the great Maori war waka making its way through the treacherous waves guarded by the mythical taniwha in the form of a great white shark. In Maori tradition, the shark was seen as the guardian of the sea and was likened to the spirit of a warrior. # # # # # # #

08.01.2022 Two girls with a Tiki is a painting which was a part of my Aotearoa series, the media used in these paintings are a mix of ink and acrylic paint on linen canvas. This is another piece inspired by a beautiful Gauguin painting completed during his long stay in Tahiti. On his voyage en route to Tahiti Gauguin had stopped for ten days in Auckland, New Zealand and had done some sketches while observing Maori artifacts found in the Auckland Art Gallery at the time. Had he stayed in ...New Zealand longer would have his works resembled those painted in Tahiti? He would have definitely found plenty of inspiration to draw from by observing the rich Maori tradition and culture. As somebody who has spent a large part of my life in New Zealand, there is no doubt that the complexity of their culture and the beauty of their various arts and designs has left a strong impression on my art as it has provided me with endless appreciation and inspiration. The Hei-tiki guarded by one of the girls in her arms represents the continuation and flourishing of Maori art and culture in Aotearoa which has had a strong resurgence in recent times. . . 03.01.2022 The Moa rider was a work inspired by my curiosity and intrigue with the now extinct Moa, one of the largest flightless bird species that inhibited the world and that roamed the islands of New Zealand not too long ago. Upon the first European arrival in Aotearoa the Moa were already extinct and we would never truly know what it would have been like to walk and live amongst these mighty giant birds. One can only contemplate and imagine what the European explorers would have encountered had they came a few centuries earlier when the Moas were still around. . . Prints available - shipping worldwide
