18.01.2022 Festa Della Repubblica (Republican Day) is the Italian National Day which is celebrated on 2 June each year. The main celebration takes place in Rome. The Festa Della Repubblica is one of the national symbols of Italy. The day commemorates the institutional referendum held by universal suffrage in 1946, in which the Italian people were called to the polls to decide on the form of Government following the end of the Second World War and the fall of Fascism. By a majority of 12,...717,423 for republic and 10,789,284 for the monarchy Italy changed forever and became a constitutional republic. Normally the ceremonial event organized in Rome includes the deposition of a laurel wreath as a tribute to the unknown Soldier at the Altare Della Patria by the President of the Republic of Italy and a military parade along Via dei Fori Imperiali in Rome. This year because of the COVID-19 pandemic the President will host a concert behind closed doors at the Palazzo del Quirinale, the official residence of the President, as a tribute to the victims of the corona virus and address the Italian people. The event will be televised by RAI, the Italian television network. Viva la Repubblica, Viva Italia. See more

06.01.2022 Ferragosto is a public holiday celebrated on the 15th August in Italy. Its inception dates to the Roman Empire and celebrated fertility and honouring the gods. The name ‘Ferragosto’ comes from the original Latin name ‘Feriae Augusti’, which means the Festivals of Emperor Augustus. The day originally celebrated on the 1st August was a day of rest after days of hard work of the agriculture sector. It became a custom for workers to wish their employers buon ferragosto and they... would get a monetary bonus. During these celebrations horse races were organised across the Empire and beasts of burden were released from their work duties and decorated with flowers. The tradition continues today virtually unchanged during the ‘Palio dell’Assunta’ which takes place on the 16th August in Siena. This became law during the Renaissance throughout the Papal State. As the festivity was associated with political activity and its origin was pagan, the Catholic Church moved the festival to the 15th August which celebrated the Assumption of Mary. This festival was also used by Mussolini to give the lower classes the possibility to visit cultural cities or go to the seaside for one to three days by creating holiday trains with extremely low cost tickets for the duration of the holiday season. As lodging and food was not included this explains why the day is associated with packed lunches and barbecues. See more
