25.01.2022 Autumn Shiatsu Autumn can be a time when we feel a little depressed, lethargic, and indecisive. In Oriental medicine autumn relates to the lungs and large intestine. To encourage regulation of your intestines, toning of the lungs, cleansing of the blood, and to increase stamina during Autumn, the following foods are wonderful to incorporate into your diet. ... Miso Tempeh Greens & root vegetables Lentils Varied seaweeds Cooked seasonal fruits Ginger Onion Garlic When our lungs and large intestine are nourished, we notice our thinking become clearer, our bodies more energetic, our optimism return & we experience greater connectedness to the people around us & our life in general. Autumn Cooking Now is the time to move towards richer heartier dishes & to increase our sea salt and oil intake, which creates warmth in the body. We naturally begin to lessen our raw food intake, to where salads & vegetables are warmed & lightly steamed & vegetables are cut into larger pieces & cooked longer. Thinks stews, soups, & dishes that are sautéed longer. These foods & cooking methods along with seasonal Shiatsu, regular exercise, & stretching, will greatly support us in remaining optimistic, clear headed & energised this Autumn! 22.01.2022 Autumn cooking! Tumeric Ginger Dahl. I made this today! A super simple & wonderful immune boosting, fortifying, nurturing bowl of goodness. Packed with tumeric, garlic and ginger. Perfect for this change of season, to ensure you your family & loved ones stay lurgy free this season! Also fantastic to make as soon as you feel your coming down with a flu or cold. I tend to go strong if I feel my family are coming down with something, but if i make it as as a general tonic I ...go milder. I’m a vegetarian so Dahl is a staple for me. What’s not to love about lentils. Humble, inexpensive, nutritious, and oh so satisfying! #lentils #nutition #autumn #shiatsu #foodasmedicine Ingredients you’ll need. 1 tbsp olive oil 1 brown onion, diced 2 or 3 cloves of garlic or more! 1 cup red lentils 1 tsp fresh ginger, grated or more! I like my soups gingery & garlicky. 1 tsp or more of Fresh tumeric (I like lots, more like 4tps) 2/12 cups of stock of choice. I use vegetarian stock. tsp cayenne pepper or use paprika as a milder option. Salt and pepper, to your taste Greek yogurt to dollup on top! Method. In a pot heat extra virgin olive oil and saute onion for 2-3 minutes or until transparent in appearance. Add red lentils, stir for a about 1 minute. Add the rest of the ingredients, covering and cooking for 30 - 45 minutes. Or until lentils are nice & soft. You can add more stock or water for thinner soup. I like to add Greek yogurt on top a sprig of coriander & have some lightly toasted pita bread or gorgeous sourdough toast on the side for the crunch factor! sprinkled with extra cayenne pepper or even smoked paprika! Enjoy! & please if you make it let me know all about it in the comments below!

16.01.2022 Teen Shiatsu! Our teens are under enormous pressure to succeed at school & often struggle to find a balance between their school workload, after school activities, peer pressure & hormonal changes. Which can all contribute to a tired, grumpy, uncommunicative & often emotional or angry teen. Regular Shiatsu, early nights, nutritionally rich diet & quality time can destress & support your teen through this often turbulent time. Ethan our teenage son is enjoying his regular Shia...tsu treatment on our deck, as the weather has been so superb! TIPS FOR OUR TEENS Encourage screen free time after 8pm, on school nights. We have reading hour on weeknights after 8pm where we all gather in the lounge room with our books. Teach the importance of your child making a wholesome nourishing breakfast. One of our favourites is grated apple, grated ginger, walnuts, chia seeds, granola, topped with coconut yogurt & strawberries. Help your teen maintain organisation. Often with hormonal changes & growth spurts, keeping on top of organisation can prove to be a real challenge for teens. We achieve this by daily checking in on their work benches & encouraging them to have a specific place for all their belongings. We've created a zone by the front door where they can unload all their books & school belongings into allocated shelves. Ask your teens how their day was, observe & listen, gently prompting them to talk freely about what's happening in their world. The more you do this, the more you'll be amazed at how much they share. This not only helps your child feel heard & cared for, but also gives you a gauge on where your child is emotionally. (We often go down to the beach with the dogs & talk while we throw the ball. ) Teenagers naturally want more freedom & independence, it's all too easy & common for parents & teens to disconnect from one another. Teens need us now as much as ever, to help guide & nurture them in achieving their full potential.

13.01.2022 How to make Home Made Oat Milk Easy, Cheap, Fast! Personally I love the sweet creamy taste of Almond milk, but at $32kg for raw organic almonds it's become a special treat in our household! ... Steel cut oats in comparison are $9kg. Known as Irish oats the inner part of the oat kernels have only been cut 2 to 3 times with steel, instead of rolled. As a result they are more nutritious taste nuttier are chewier and feel incredibly satisfying! Ingredients : cup steel cut oats 3 cups filtered water (4 if you like your milk thinner) Pitted majool dates to taste or 1-2 tbs maple syrup. 1/4 tsp cinnamon or any of your favourite spices. pinch of sea salt. Have handy : A blender. Any blender will do, because you only have to blend oats a little. A large Bowl A small bowl Fine sieve Measuring spoons & cups Method : 1) Rinse and drain 1 cup steel cut oats. Cover and soak over night. Soaking not only helps soften the oats but also increases digestibility. 2) After soaking, rinse and drain oats well. The oats become slimy, rinse until slime free! 3) Place oats in a blender with 3 cups of water or 4 if you like your milk thinner. If using dates as a sweetener, add them now. 4) Start on low increase speed gradually. High speed for 10 seconds only. 5) Place sieve over large bowl and pour mixture in slowly. 6) Scoop oat pulp out of sieve and place in small bowl. Use this pulp later in oat biscuits, oat banana bread, or muffins. 7) Place sieve over blender and pour milk in to strain again. 8) Repeat methods 5,6,7 until desired milk texture is achieved. I strain 2 or 3 times. 9) Now whisk in your maple syrup, salt & cinnamon. 10) Pour into airtight glass jars. The milk will seperate, this is completely normal! Just give the jars a shake before you drink the milk. Will last in the fridge up to 4 days. If you make this oat milk, let me know how you go in the comments below! Enjoy!

11.01.2022 Bliss Balls! A friend asked me yesterday for my recipe, thanks Karen for the inspiration and motivation to get the recipe out of my head and into print! Ingredients : ... 1 cup of Majool dates or regular dates are also fine. Good to soak overnight (not crucial) 1/3 cup coconut oil Chia seed gel ( To make chia gel, take 2 tablespoon of Chia seeds & soak in 4 tablespoons of water let sit till it forms into a gel. Ten seconds! Add more water if required. You want it to be a gel consistency, not a watery consistency. 1 cup of Almonds. ( Good to soak overnight but not crucial) or you can do half cashews half almonds or whatever nut you prefer!) 1/3 cup cocoa powder 1/3 cup shredded coconut Generous pinch of Himalayan salt. * Shredded coconut, nuts or cocao powder for rolling Bliss Balls in when finished. Method: Place in order the above ingredients into a Viatamixer or high speed blender. Pulse initially about 5 or 6 times for 2 or 3 seconds each time. Blend on low then increase to highest speed using the tamper ( which is the long stirrer that fits into the lid) push down all ingredients into the blade to help them blend. Blend for approx 40 50 seconds. I like to have crunch & texture in my bliss balls. . But if you want your bliss balls to be smooth, blend longer. Take a dessert spoon (or teaspoon, if you want smaller bliss balls) of the mixture & roll between your hands to form balls. Roll Balls in shredded coconut, crushed nuts or cocoa powder. Place on a tray lined with baking paper. Place in fridge or freezer till firm. Will keep in air tight container in fridge for up to one week. But they never make it that long! Too yummy! To make your Bliss Balls more nutritious try adding the following ingredients. Tbsp of Macca powder Tbsp of Slippery Elm Tbsp Spiralina or any green powder. You can also use sultanas, apricots, or any other dried fruit instead of dates. Get creative with your Bliss Balls, think of your favourite flavours & experiment. Personally I love chilli, Macca and cocao bliss balls! * Handy Tips! *The thing to remember with making Bliss Balls is your dry ingredients & wet ingredients. You want balance between the two. After a while you develop a feeling for how much of each to use. I made them today for the first time measuring my ingredients for this post! They turned out well, not too dry or too moist! phew! * Add Cocao butter in replacement or in addition to coconut oil in warmer weather. Cocoa butter is hard at room temperature. It keeps the bliss balls firm out of the fridge. Better for kids lunch boxes. * Coconut oil on its own in bliss balls in warm weather will become soft. In warm weather they need to be kept in the fridge to maintain their firmness. Enjoy! & give me a comment with your feedback when you make them! Or any other questions you may have. Katrina

07.01.2022 Cultivating Optimal Health in Summer! Summer is a time of heightened activity, creativity, fullness, expansion & joy. The sun is shining & there are so many parties festivals & concerts to attend!!! It's the time to be out & about, sharing our warmth, our fun & our energy with others. Summer marks the time of the fire element which in Oriental Medicine correlates to the heart. The heart is all about love, connectedness, warmth, & joy. It not only governs our ability to... cultivate & nurture our relationship to self & others, but also our ability to share our love warmth & joy with our friends, colleagues, partners, strangers & indeed all inhabitants of earth! When the Fire element is in balance we can effortlessly share our love, & joy. Our heart is open to new possibilities & experiences. We are warm, trusting, communicative, playful, friendly, open, content, calm & radiant. People are naturally drawn to us. Think Joy, sharing, fun, laughter, play & love this summer! If however our fire element becomes depleted, the spark low. We can feel flat, lifeless, isolated, depressed & anxious. Another heart imbalance is when the fire element blazes out of control where feelings of overwhelm are the norm & we may feel like we are constantly seeking attention & approval, & finding ourselves laughing out loud inappropriately & at times taking on a scary manic demeanour. Pushing away the very people we so sorely want connectedness with! Common complaints of a fire imbalance are anxiety depression, loss of spark, insomnia, apathy, wanting to control others, feeling flat & dull, feeling isolated & alone, inability to trust, unable to feel vulnerable. Foods to stay cool! Watermelon, cucumbers, coconut water. Think fresh juicy foods. Salads, lightly steamed vegetables, foods that keep you feeling light & energised. Avoid or limit fried salty & heavy foods. To help keep our family hydrated throughout the summertime we make a big jug of water with pieces of cucumber & mint in the bottom & then top up throughout the day. So refreshing! Shiatsu can greatly alleviate the symptoms often associated with summer to facilitate a calmer cooler more joyful you! Seasonal Shiatsu is a great way of keeping us in balance and in harmony with the seasons. Book in today for your seasonal tune up! Katrina http://ikiru.com.au/contact/

07.01.2022 It takes mindfulness to know your truth & courage to speak it in a clear, grounded, powerful & inspired way. In oriental medicine if the earth element is out of balance this can prove to not only be a challenge but a real struggle for some. When we feel nurtured grounded & nourished it's more likely we will have the clarity to articulate our needs & feel heard by others. Incorporating autumnal orange foods into the diet, such as sweet potato, carrots, pumpkin, oranges mandarins etc, & spending time grounding oneself gardening, or simply doing something nurturing for yourself, a long bath, walk on the beach, reading a book or booking in for a seasonal Shiatsu session. All these simple yet effective elements will greatly facilitate a more grounded harmonious balanced & happier you!

06.01.2022 Spring Shiatsu Spring is upon us and it represents a time of renewal, growth, new beginnings, and cleansing. Spring is the perfect time to start that new project you’ve been putting off, a herb garden, an art project, or that business idea you’ve been wanting to get off the ground.... In Spring we start to naturally wake up earlier and perhaps feel the need to go for a brisk walk in the mornings. We start wanting to eating lighter and less salty foods. Stir fries, lightly steamed vegetables and fresh juices are a great choice. Incorporating fresh young greens into the diet is wonderful, as green is the colour that correlates with spring and is gently cleansing to the Liver. Spring is the time for the Liver and Gallbladder, which both relate to decision making in Oriental Medicine. If you're going around and around with decision making over an issue, perhaps it’s time to book in for a seasonal shiatsu tune up. The Liver and gallbladder also have a direct relationship with the flow of energy and blood through the body. If there is an imbalance in this element, symptoms of frustration, anger, migraines depression and stiffness may be a dominant presence. A seasonal Shiatsu, some gentle meridian stretches, brisk walking and eating lighter will get you back on track in no time. Book in for your Seasonal Shiatsu today! Katrina 0414830177

06.01.2022 Winter is almost upon us, and in Oriental Medicine winter represents the time when yang energy retreats and we get an increase in the deep, the dark, the yin. I know i can feel it, particularly these past few days. It’s getting colder it’s getting darker, everything is slowing down and becoming quieter. During winter in the body, our energies go deeper into the organs and bones. (Yin) Through rest we cultivate warmth and regeneration. Winter is the ultimate time for contempl...ation and introspection. An opportunity to connect with our inner selves. In winter we tend to need more sleep, and can often find ourselves seeking out peace and quiet. The organs associated with winter are the kidney and bladder. These meridians, which are the water element, run along the back of the body. Symptoms of deficiency will be fear and anxiety, feeling too cold, experiencing insomnia or disrupted sleep, feeling lethargic, and suffering back pain. When the Kidney /bladder meridians are healthy we will feel refreshed, rested, nourished, strong and supported, accompanied by that wonderful feeling of moving forward in our lives. During winter we will naturally crave warmer foods, hot baths and generally we will need more minerals to feed the yin and the bones; think slow cooked stews broths & hearty casseroles. By increasing sea salt and seaweed into the diet during winter, this will supplement the kidney and bladders' energetic and physical needs. Daily doses of deep leafy greens and also whole grains can also support our mineral needs during this time. Adding lightly roasted sea salted sesame seeds and dulse flakes to foods is a good way to get added daily minerals. During winter it's helpful to increase our fats helping keep our bodies warm and nourished. Good quality butter, coconut oil, sesame oil or fish oils are all highly beneficial. With the Lack of sun that often accompanies winter ( Not so much here on the sunny coast! Lucky us!) I like to see winter as an opportunity to cultivate and nurture our deep fires within. By using our internal time of contemplation and introspection, in a way our internal time acts as the sun, keeping us warm, nourished and hopeful. Seasonal Shiatsu will keep you feeling in sink with the seasons and allow you to be in optimal health and balance. 0414830177 http://ikiru.com.au/contact/

06.01.2022 Digestive Healing with Slippery Elm It's 3pm and we've hit our low energy point in the day. Many of us are unable to take a nap to recharge, so instead we reach for coffee, sugary treats, juice or tea to provide us with a boost to see us through. I see our low energy points as an opportunity to nourish ourselves, indeed every time we eat or drink we have an opportunity to increase our nutrition our vitality our energy levels. ... Slippery Elm is a nutrient rich powder from the bark of the slippery Elm tree and is traditionally used for various ailments including coughs, stomach upsets, colds, urinary tract infections etc. Slippery Elm when mixed with liquid becomes mucilaginous (a soothing gel) which accounts for the majority of its medicinal properties. Slippery Elm is a demulcent which provides a lovely gentle soothing action on all mucous membranes including the digestive tract, urinary and respiratory tract, and will also soothe the skin on contact. Wonderful as a poultice for wounds, burns, boils, ulcers and skin inflammation. Three of my Favourite ways to add Slippery Elm to our diet. 1) Coconut, Cocao, Almond, Date, Bliss Balls. 2) Almond milk, cinnamon hot chocolate. 3) Banana cinnamon oat porridge. I add 2 teaspoons of slippery Elm per person. In the bliss balls I average 1/4 tsp per ball. We make Almond milk, but you can use any milk you prefer. Learning to make your own seed or nut milk is fun easy & nutritious ! Would love to know how you have your slippery Elm!? Let me know in the comments!

04.01.2022 What is Shiatsu? Shiatsu is a Japanese word that quite literally translates as finger pressure. Shiatsu in the west is often referred to as acupressure. Application of pressure to the body surface is the primary principle of shiatsu. Although the therapist will often use more than finger pressure, using, elbows, palms, feet and even their knees. Shiatsu is a gentle yet deep therapy that puts both the mind and body into a deep state of relaxation and balance. Shiatsu is conside...red a preventative therapy in that it’s primarily used to maintain good health, yet will also improve poor health and give the receiver a renewed and heightened sense of well being. Regular treatments encourage and facilitate ongoing optimal health and will restore balance and harmony to a compromised system. It is recommended at an absolute minimum, a treatment every change of season. The therapist will move slowly along lines in the body called meridians and will apply comfortable stationary holding pressure to the body on acupressure points along the meridian. No oils are used and the receiver is fully clothed, lying on a futon on the floor, or chair if required. The whole body system benefits from Shiatsu, a relaxing, yet deep and effective therapy for pain, headaches, stress, and many other common complaints. Below are but a few of the many conditions and concerns Shiatsu can help with. Back, neck & shoulder pain. Insomnia Anxiety Strengthen body, mind and spirit. General aches and pains.
