19.01.2022 AMAC 2020 State Titles Today 4 of our athletes representing IKO competed in the AMAC (COVID Safe) State Titles tournament. Being the state titles, all tournament athletes were extremely competitive which made the event all that much more difficult for our athletes to secure top positions. Nevertheless, our representatives did very well despite the odds. We are very proud and would like to congratulate all of our 4 competitors who competed with heart and soul. Well done. A spe...cial congratulation goes to Jordan Xirodimas who secured the following top positions - 3rd Place in Kata - 2nd Place in Points Sparring - 2nd Place in Freestyle Sparring - 2nd Place in Points Contact Sparring and - 2nd Place in Full contact (IKOs debut in this event) Note: Jordans full contact event for his age group (i.e. 16-17 years) was cancelled and so he decided to go toe to toe with the adults division. Well Done A special congratulations also goes out to Mia Cattarin who secured the following top positions - 1st Place in Kata - 2nd Place in Points Sparring - 2nd Place in Freestyle Sparring IKO Goju Ryu Karate. 17.01.2022 5 MINUTE A DAY KARATE (FREE TUTORIALS) Greetings Parents and Students of IKO Goju Ryu Karate Firstly, I would like to thank all students who have trained with us thus far and would like to ensure the community that we are still active in karate on a daily basis within the confines of recent laws imposed by the government regarding COVID-19 With a complete lockdown imminent, we ask all community members to stay calm and try not to panic. Please, be kind and compassionate tow...ards each other and remember, after every storm theres always a rainbow. As karate practitioners, we understand the importance of staying physically and mentally fit and what better way than to undertake some lawful physical activity in the park. Some aspects of the Martial Art skills to a degree are perishable and so I ask that all martial art students practice karate for at least 5 minutes a day. I myself am physically active everyday even though the dojo halls have been closed to the public indefinitely. All I ask from students is to do a 5 minute a day session on karate not only to maintain their skills but to also help manage stress at home. And so, I have compiled a set of free video tutorials that students can access off me as a guide to what and how they should practice Goju Ryu Karate. For those that are interested in these free video tutorials, just SMS me your request, and I will upload these tutorials in a folder for you in dropbox These video tutorial compilations will include instructional videos on Kihon (basics), Kicks as well as katas Taikyoku Jodan, Chudan, Gedan, Gekisai - Itchi, Gekisai Ni, Sanchin, Saifa, and Seiyunchin Remember. Dont panic, dont give up and stay active. Hope to see you all soon. God Bless. See more

17.01.2022 WE ARE BACK Greetings Parents and Students We are now FREE and safe to resume karate training on Wednesday 1st July 2020.... Firstly, we wish to reassure all members that the safety and health of you and your families is our first concern. This being said, we would like to ensure the community that we will be adhering to the COVID19 guidelines when we reopen, such as but not limited to: - 1. The provision of hand sanitiser dispensers at the dojos where it will be mandatory for all students to use when entering the premises. 2. Only 20 students per class will be allowed until regulations are further relaxed. 3. All students will need to sign in, for tracking and tracing purposes. 4. No Sparring or Partner work will be allowed for the time being until regulations are further relaxed. 5. Floors will be mopped after class ready for our classes in the following session. 6. Surface spray disinfectants will be used to wipe down any surfaces we touch again ready for our next class session. Finally, we would like to take this opportunity to let you all know how much we appreciate you and hope to see you all back soon. Thank You. Regards James Ellis

15.01.2022 Naha City, Okinawa, (circa 1930s) Chojun Miyagi Sensei (pictured teaching students) was an Okinawan Martial Artist who founded and systemised the first Goju Ryu school by blending Okinawan and Chinese Martial Art influences. Previous to systemising the art, Goju Ryu was known as Naha Te which was a pre- World War II term for a type of martial art indigenous to the area around Naha City. Some of his students pictured here unfortunately perished in the war. One can only imagine what great martial artists they may have become.
