19.01.2022 The Indigenous Lawyers Association of Queensland Inc. stands in support of the Black Lives Matter movement. We stand in solidarity with our brothers and sisters in the United States, Indigenous people and People of Colour around the world, but we are also grieving for the suffering of our own people from the impact of racism on our lives as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. We call on the Queensland Legal Profession and Universities who educate future generation...s of legal practitioners, to stand in solidarity with us to create the necessary change that is needed to remove entrenched racism and inequity for First Nations people in the legal system. The work of the Lowitja Institute, the national institute for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Research shows that there are very few Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples who wouldnt have suffered racism. The research found that there is a growing body of evidence showing that racism is detrimental to the mental health of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and causes life-long harm. As leaders, the legal profession needs to create effective change mechanisms beyond its current framework. We acknowledge the Queensland Law Society and the Bar Association of Queensland work towards reconciliation, however ILAQ believes that more could be done to ensure the long lasting change that is needed to create equity as well as equality for First Nations practitioners. ILAQ calls on the Queensland Law Society and the Bar Association of Queensland to implement compulsory cultural competency training and assessment in order to satisfy eligibility requirements for obtaining practising certificates, as a baseline standard. ILAQ also calls on the Queensland Government to implement the recommendations of the Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody.

05.01.2022 Yesterday we said goodbye to past ILAQ Secretary and Torres Strait Islander Barrister, Susan Anne Hamilton. Susan effected change, through advocacy and the acquisition of knowledge, for the betterment of Australias first peoples. Most significant was her appearance in the High Court in the Akiba v Commonwealth, which saw commercial fishing rights recognised for the first time under the Native Title framework. Susan was also the first Torres Strait Islander to appear before ...the High Court as a Lawyer. This accomplishment is showcased at the National Museum of Australia. In 2005 Susan graduated from Griffith University with a Bachelor of Laws, Bachelor of Commerce, Accounting and Finance and a Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice. From 2005-2007 she was Associate to Justice DA Mullins of the Supreme Court of Queensland. Susans legal career flourished over the years with her most recent role being the CEO of the Aboriginal Family Legal Service Southern Queensland which is based at Roma. She also dedicated her time to a number of community organisations. Susan will be dearly missed by all who knew her. Susan Anne Hamilton 8/7/1958 - 30/12/2018
