23.01.2022 Coming up in Echoes of Laocoön, the Chicago-based artist Tony Lewis (b. 1987). Known for his use of graphite across a variety of techniques and his interest in appropriating language, Lewis’ work has already been collected by some of the world’s most prestigious museums (including the MoMA in New York), despite his young age. The exhibition will include his take on Calvin & Hobbes comic books, which were shown at his solo exhibition at the Hirschhorn Museum in Washington. #tonylewis #chicago #calvinandhobbes #graphite #drawing #ileana #gallery #laocoon #exhibition #brisbane #moma #hirschhorn
17.01.2022 Echoes of Laocoön will include work by the Japanese artist Takesada Matsutani. He was part of the highly influential and experimental Gutai group, and his early works were made by blowing air into puddles of glue, which would then create strange-looking compositions with drip-like shapes. Matsutani moved to Paris in 1966, where he worked for the famous printmaker Stanley William Hayter, who had worked on prints for artists like Mark Rothko, Jackson Pollock and Pablo Picasso. ...There the artist became obsessed with the work of Ellsworth Kelly, and with no space to paint began a series of hard-edge silkscreens which featured the abstracted shapes of drips, which he later executed as large paintings. #takesadamatsutani #matsutani #gutai #japan #japaneseart #paris #stanleyhayter #atelier17 #printmaker #markrothko #jacksonpollock #picasso #ellsworthkelly #drips #laocoon #ileana #gallery #brisbane #australia @ Brisbane, Queensland, Australia
14.01.2022 The upcoming exhibition will also feature a work by Christopher Wool, one of the most important artists working since the 1980s. As far as I can tell, his work has only been exhibited in Australia once before, and none of the museums have his work in their collections. The silkscreen I’ll be showing is based on one of his Drawings of Beer on the Wall series (2004), and has been recycled / re-appropriated by the artist many times, including for his suite of 8 paintings at the... Venice Biennale in 2011. I’ve been a huge fan of his work in silkscreen, which is a very postmodern take on the fallacy of expression in gestural painting. 1. The artist working with silkscreen 2. 12.01.2022 Very excited to announce that there will be two works by Tim Maguire in ‘Echoes of Laocoön’. Born in the UK, based in between Sydney and France, and having studied at the Kunstakademie in Dusseldorf, he is best known for his impressive large-scale paintings after 17th century Dutch still lifes found in art-history books. The exhibition will include two paintings from a body of work that is lesser known in Australia, and inspired by the Italian artist Lucio Fontana. More detai...ls will be announced soon. @tim_maguire_art 1. Portrait of Tim Maguire 2. Installation view of Tim Maguire’s exhibition ‘Canal’ at the @chisenhalegallery in London, 1992 3.
