17.01.2022 Are you a nurse, midwife or carer? Time for a check-up on the deductions you can claim this tax time! As long as it relates to your employment, you can clai...m a deduction for the work-related portion of expenses like professional association fees, annual practising certificate fees, and subscriptions to technical or professional publications. You can claim a deduction for self-education expenses if your course relates directly to your current job (eg wound care course). You can’t claim a deduction for self-education if your course is designed to help you get a new job (eg so you can move from a role as a carer to a registered nurse). You can claim a deduction when you drive to and from a different workplace for the same employer on the same day (eg between clinics). You generally can’t claim the cost of trips between home and work, even if you have to work outside ‘normal’ business hours. You can claim the cost of buying, mending or cleaning certain uniforms that are unique and distinctive or protective clothing (eg non-slip shoes) your boss requires you to wear. You can’t claim the cost of buying or cleaning plain clothing (eg white shirt), even if you’re required to wear it or you only wear it for work. Still unsure about what you can claim?
