23.01.2022 Health Care Hero | I love meeting new people every day. In the Emergency Department (ED) no two days are the same. I know that when I walk out the doors at the end of a 12 hour shift, no matter how challenging my day was, the next time I come to work there will be a whole new lot of patients and new challenges. As an ED Nurse the most rewarding thing is seeing people improve. We have people come into the ED who are really unwell. When we're able to treat the problem and see ...them improve, it makes it all worth it. I love the enthusiasm and dedication of the staff I work with and the appreciation we receive from our patients. Everyone works so hard and it really is all about providing the best care for our patients. A workmate, Amanda and I run a bushwalking group for the department. It’s a great way to relax and good for both our physical and mental health, which is so important when you work in a high stress job. I like to remind people to be active, get out and go for a walk every day when you can or just sit and watch the sunrise/sunset or go birdwatching. We are lucky to have so many beautiful places close by in the Illawarra and it’s amazing the positive effect just being outside can have on your health. Aimee, Emergency Department Nurse, Shellharbour Hospital
10.01.2022 The COVID-19 vaccines are very good at protecting you against severe COVID-19, but even if you are vaccinated you can still get a mild infection that you can pass on to others. That’s why it’s important to continue to practice COVID safe behaviours even after you’ve had your vaccine. > Stay 1.5m apart > Practice good hand hygiene > Wear a mask when you can’t physically distance... > Get tested if you experience any respiratory symptoms, even if mild Professor Kristine Macartney, Director of the National Centre for Immunisation Research and Surveillance explains. 02.01.2022 Staff and patients at Shoalhaven dialysis unit came together to have some fun wearing red to raise the awareness of Kidney disease - a silent disease! Most people don’t know they have it until they have less than 90% kidney function. These patients are on hemodialysis 3 times a week, and they understand all to well the importance of early detection and effective treatment to slow the disease progression down. Raising awareness about the risk factors for kidney disease encourages people to speak to their GP and get tested. What is your risk? Take the risk factor test at KidneyHealth: www.kidney.org.au/kidneyrisktest
01.01.2022 In 2019 Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health District completed 2167 pediatric surgeries across three hospitals. The majority of these surgeries were for dental procedures and the removal of appendices, tonsils and adenoids. We know there can be a lot of fear and anxiety around the ‘unknown’ of surgery and being put under anesthetic so we created a suite of videos that show the surgery journey and what to expect, aiming to help families through this process. The videos were produced in partnership with the community and are based on feedback from prior surgical experiences. For more videos about surgery in our District, visit our YouTube playlist: https://www.youtube.com/playlist
