13.01.2022 The recent case of a Western Australian adult diagnosed with meningococcal B disease is a timely reminder for us all to remain up to date with our vaccines. Meningococcal disease is an uncommon, life-threatening illness caused by a bacterial infection of the blood and/or the membranes that line the spinal cord and brain. There are two types of meningococcal vaccines available: one protects against four serogroups of the meningococcal disease (serogroups A, C, W and Y) and the... other protects against serogroup B. The MenACWY vaccine is offered free to all children at 12 months of age and to all Year 10 students, with a free catch-up program for 15-19 year-olds. Due to a higher rate of meningococcal disease in Aboriginal children in WA, the MenACWY vaccine is offered free to Aboriginal children from age 6 weeks to 12 months of age and the menB vaccine is free for all Aboriginal children aged up to 2 years of age. Both these vaccines are also free for people of all ages with certain medical risk conditions. Those eligible to receive the free meningoccal ACWY and B vaccines can pop into one of our new Immunisation Clinics, held Mondays to Fridays 10am-3pm, to get up-to-date with their vaccines. 12.01.2022 HPV VACCINE SAFETY If you or your child is due for an HPV vaccine soon, here is the latest Australian safety data. For those who have any concerns about this va...ccine, this data shows us that it is safe and well-tolerated, with only minor side effects. Of the 63 000+ parents/carers who participated in providing data: 91.2% reported no adverse events after immunisation. Of those who did report an adverse event, the most common were: Injection site pain Injection site swelling / redness Tiredness Headache Fever Irritability Sleep pattern change These symptoms are generally mild and short-lived. Why is the HPV vaccine important? Having the HPV vaccine means you're far less likely to have genital warts, certain types of cancer or other illnesses caused by HPV in the future. The vaccine helps to protect against cervical cancer and some less common cancers, such as penile, vaginal, vulval and throat cancers caused by HPV. (This data was last updated 18/09/2020 and comes from AusVaxSafety, a world-leading national vaccine safety system, led by the National Centre for Immunisation Research and Surveillance (NCIRS) and funded by the Australian Government Department of Health).

10.01.2022 When making a decision about immunisation, it's good to look at the risks of the diseases vs the risks of the vaccine. This week, we're weighing up the effects ...of #mumps against the effects of the MMR vaccine.
