25.01.2022 NSW Health is urging people to take precautions with heatwave conditions forecast to continue for parts of the state this weekend. Simple ways to reduce the ris...k of heat-related illness include: Avoid the heat of the day by staying indoors and keeping cool by using air-conditioning, fans and drawing blinds and curtains closed Keep hydrated by drinking plenty of water Check on the welfare of vulnerable neighbours, friends and family Plan ahead for hot days. Signs of heat related illness include dizziness, tiredness, irritability, thirst, fainting, muscle pains or cramps, rapid pulse, shallow breathing, vomiting and confusion. People showing severe signs should seek urgent medical attention and, in an emergency situation, call Triple Zero (000). People should also continue to practise COVID-19 safe behaviour during the heatwave. If you are able to cool your home through a combination of fans, air-conditioning and closed blinds, please do so and stay at home. This is so physical distancing in other indoor spaces where people may seek relief from the heat, such as libraries or shopping centres, is not compromised. If you do leave your home to visit other indoor spaces, please physically distance and wear a face mask in places where you cannot maintain 1.5 metres distance from others. Keep in touch with relatives, neighbours and friends virtually through phone, social media or video call.

25.01.2022 The 2019-20 bush fire season was the most challenging NSW has ever faced - and took an enormous toll on communities across the state. After major events like th...is, we conduct community research to better understand how people prepared and responded to the fires. You may have been impacted by the fires, or you may have been travelling in an area that was impacted. Through the UOW: University of Wollongong, Australia and the Bushfire and Natural Hazards CRC, we are keen to hear from you. 25.01.2022 SEVERE TO EXTREME HEATWAVE - #NSW An intense November heatwave is expected to affect large parts of the state for the last week of the month and persist int...o early December as a slow moving and very hot air mass pools over the region. Temperatures are expected to be more typical of a mid-summer heatwave rather than late spring, with the temperature expected to soar into the mid to high 40s across some inland areas over consecutive days. Western parts of NSW are expected to scorch, with towns such as #Bourke, #Wilcannia, #Walgett and #WhiteCliffs likely to see at least 5-6 consecutive days of 40+ temperatures and some locations possibly longer. Bourke may reach up to 46 on Sunday and Tuesday. Whilst some may think these temperatures over inland areas are typical, for this time of year they are very unusual (generally occurring in January and February), with only November 2009 and 2014 seeing similar heat. The slopes, ranges and eastern plains (#Dubbo, #Moree, #Tamworth etc) will feel the worst of the heat a little later, with the hottest airmass affecting these regions from the weekend and into early December, with temperatures into the high 30s and low to mid 40s. Further east will be spared the worst heat, with weak southerly changes preventing heat from persisting over consecutive days. #Sydney will see it’s hottest days this weekend reaching the mid 30s in the city, and up to 42 in the west. The hot airmass is expected to break down over the east of the country within the first week of December due to a cold front and an increase of moisture, showers and storms. 25.01.2022 The Bureau of Meteorology has forecast heat wave conditions to affect much of NSW until at least next Tuesday. This will increase the fire risk across much of state with Very High and Severe fire danger likely on the weekend. Plan and prepare now.

24.01.2022 #LIVE: NSW RFS Commissioner Rob Rogers and FRNSW Commissioner Paul Baxter are providing an update and outlining what the public needs to be aware of going into the bush fire season.

24.01.2022 Kangaroo Ridge Fire Update Fire continues to burn east of the Princes Highway South of Heathcote, North of Waterfall. The fire remains at ADVICE and there a...re currently no threats. Abaroo Hazard Reduction burns to the West of the highway in this location. Significant smoke is likely to impact the highway. A wind change tonight is expect to push smoke to the north under the influence of southerly winds. This will likely cause significant smoke impact on the areas of Heathcote and Engadine. Remember Keep doors and windows closed to prevent smoke from entering your home. Remove washing from clotheslines. Ensure pets have a protected area. If you’re driving through a smoky area, slow down, keep your windows up and turn your headlights on. Don’t call Triple Zero just to report that it’s smoky. Save Triple Zero for emergencies. 23.01.2022 Happy International Men’s Day. Today we celebrate the positive role models we have not only in the RFS, but also the wider community and acknowledge their input... and the influence they play in keeping our society safe, happy and functioning. We also would like to draw a light onto some of the issues affecting our males and associated health issues. #internationalmensday

22.01.2022 Did you know that you don’t have to touch live powerlines to receive a deadly shock! It’s called ‘Step Potential’ and it’s a hidden death trap. If you approach... fallen live powerlines, you could receive a deadly shock within 8m or so of there contact with the ground or ‘earth’. It can be even deadlier if the ground is wet. This video shows the moment live high tension 33KV power lines fell from a burning pole in the early hours of this morning. Firefighters were already well clear, knowing the dangers of electrocution and had isolated the area pending the arrival of electricity workers. Once isolated our RFS crews could move in and safely extinguish the fire. WIN News Illawarra ABC Illawarra i98 FM Wave FM 96.5 9 News Illawarra Illawarra Mercury

20.01.2022 SWS | Please find below an article written about SWS in Helensburgh Water on! Firefighters need water to fight bush fires, and you can help by joining the Stati...c Water Supply programme. A Static Water Supply (SWS) sign on your property will let firefighters know you have an additional water source that could be used during a fire emergency. In an emergency situation the option to connect to a hydrant can sometimes be compromised, and fire trucks have a limited supply of water. The main truck used by the Helensburgh Volunteer Fire Brigade holds 3500 litres. In the event that hydrants fail, firefighters have to look for a static water supply. Examples of suitable water supplies include: A property dam, which can be used to refill fire tankers and firefighting aircraft such a helicopters. A backyard swimming pool, which provides an ideal static water supply for small portable pumps and hose lines to help protect your home. A tank, which with appropriate fittings can also be used to quickly supply water for firefighting. If you have a pool, tank or dam with 3000+ litre capacity, have a property near bushland and wish to be part of the SWS programme, please contact your local fire brigade to arrange an onsite inspection or visit www.rfs.nsw.gov.au. Cassie King from Helensburgh contacted the local brigade. She has lived in the area for twelve years and her house adjoins the bush. The first time I ever heard of it was through my mum’s neighbour, says Cassie. They rang me and asked if they could put a SWS sign on my mum’s letterbox. He explained to me what it was, so of course I said yes that’s fine. Cassie then took the initiative and volunteered her own large rainwater tank as an SWS. Volunteer firefighters visited Cassie’s property to check if the property is accessible, to make sure the tank was big enough, and that there was a fitting for a hose. Her tank passed the test and she now has the SWS sign displayed under her letterbox. Pictured: The SWS sign and firefighters from the Helensburgh Volunteer Rural Fire brigade using a portable pump to get water out of a swimming pool. 19.01.2022 Advice: Kangaroo Ridge, Princes Hwy Waterfall (Sutherland LGA). The fire is burning into the Royal National Park in a south easterly direction under north weste...rly winds, with an increase of activity on the southern edge of the fire today. A light south easterly wind change is forecast for late this afternoon. Water bombing aircraft, including the 737 Large Air Tanker, continue to assist crews working to control the fire, in areas that contain difficult terrain.
