23.01.2022 In a recent case Mitch and Caitlin saw Sunny for a castration who presented with a cryptorchid, or a ‘rig’, meaning one testicle had not descended. This can be quite common, and requires a more invasive type of surgery. In most cases they need to be removed as can pose a risk later in life if left. Sunny underwent surgery at the Illawarra Equine Centre clinic, where he was anaesthetised during the procedure. He was put on his back and supported on either side of his body. ...Through a small incision the testicle was found within the abdomen and pulled to the outside where the normal castration procedure could be performed. Ligatures were tied around the cord to cut off the blood supply and the testicle was removed. As the second testicle was in the normal position, removal of that one was done through the scrotum itself. Both incision sites, were closed and cleaned and Sunny was recovered. As this was a slightly more invasive procedure than a routine castration he was put on a course of antibiotics for 5 days and was kept at the clinic so his medication could be given and his wound could be monitored. He went home well a few days after surgery and is now doing well. 20.01.2022 Did you know horses have three eyelids? The ‘third eyelid’ is located within the inside corner of the horse's eye. It lifts as the eye retracts and helps to protect the eye from trauma. They can be susceptible to squamous cell carcinomas, the second most common tumour in horses, and the most common tumour in the equine eye. #horses #pony #equestrian #veterinarian #equinehealth #horsecare #illawarraequinevet

20.01.2022 In our latest case study Dr Nikita treated Murphy, a 31 year old thoroughbred with acute sinusitis. Following head x-rays, she removed two of his teeth at the clinic and drilled a small hole in his skull in order to flush the sinus cavity with sterile saline daily until the wound had healed. Now, several weeks post op, Murphy is fully recovered and enjoying life without the pain or discomfort. 19.01.2022 Congratulations to Carlee Mottley who's mare Folly had her beautiful foal on Saturday night, a cute little filly. The mare went through AI reproduction at Illawarra Equine Centre clinic facilitated by Mitch; the pregnancy was later confirmed by Nikita; and the foal and mare were both checked and given a clean bill of health by Caitlin this week, and what a great outcome! #foal2020 #illawarrahorses #shoalhavenhorses #horsevets #illawarraequinecentre

16.01.2022 Nikita shows how to safely check your horse's back to identify any stiffness along its spine, in its gluteal muscles. We want to see them flexible along both sides and not reacting to any pressure along the spine. A reaction from the horse could indicate discomfort caused by the saddle. #illawarraequinecentre #horses #pony #illawarrahorses #lovemyhorse #horsevet #horsefeed #stockhorse #horsehealth

Things to look out for are -... raised hair signs of scratching in the area swelling discharge If you are are concerned about a lump on your horse, it’s always best to call us at Illawarra Equine Centre and make an appointment for our Vets to have a look. #horses #pony #equine #horsevet #illawarra #veterinarian #horsehealth #stockhorsesofinstagram #stockhorse #ponyclubnsw #illawarraequinecentre

09.01.2022 A horse's temperature is a vital indicator of its state of health. If you suspect your horse or pony may be unwell, it can be very helpful to tell the vet its temperature when booking an appointment. Here is a quick guide on how to take a temperature safely. As Mitch explains, a healthy range is between 37.5 and 38.5 degrees.
