24.01.2022 Quick trip tonight to my go-to fox spot landed me a nice vixen who did her best to give me the run around. After a few blasts on the T2 whistle, I spotted her moving across the paddock directly behind the farmer's pig pen and I quickly made a beeline straight across the farm to get within shooting range. With the long grass, "pigloos" and various other obstacles providing just enough cover, I patiently waited for the fox to walk out into the clear while I watched her appear a...nd disappear through my thermal scope...except she never did. Scratching my head trying to figure out if she had winded me (nope), heard me (nope) or seen me (nope) I took a few moments to gather my thoughts and scan the surrounding area whilst developing a plan. I knew the fox was within an 80m radius at most and was either obscured by an old shed infront of me, or in a small gully with long grass to my left. Playing it safe, I backtracked around the shed and to the opposite side and scanned the paddock before opening the gate, seeing nothing. I walked about 15m into the paddock before deciding on another plan of attack. I headed back towards where I last saw the fox, making sure to noisily close the gate to hopefully draw the attention of the fox, before heading back around the shed and popping out the other side to find myself within 10m of the vixen who was hiding in the long grass, very intently looking towards the gate I had just rattled 30 seconds earlier. Realising that something was amiss, she changed her viewpoint just as I eased the safety off and delivered 32 grains of hornady's finest copper projectile to her at 4200 feet per second. Fair to say she was throughly #outfoxed ! Sometimes it's just as satisfying to come home with a small number that you really had to work for, instead of a big tally.

23.01.2022 A big Thankyou to all those members of our Armed Forces, past and present, for the sacrifices they have made to make our wonderful country what it is today. Lest we forget

20.01.2022 Always good to see a familiar face ( Looked better seeing it behind bars) ! This particular feline made the mistake of letting it's nose lead it astray and went straight into a trap. I had identified it 2 weeks earlier during my initial survey of a new job which had a number of feral cats which were causing issues. Utilising a detached ATN X-SIGHT 4K Pro rifle scope gave me the ability to identify individual cats and gave me a good gauge of how many remained as the program w...ent along. After 2 visits, 3 of the 8 cats initially identified were captured and confirmed as being present during the initial survey visit, along with 1 surprise cat which was not initially spotted. Although thermal technology is generally seen as being the rolls royce of night time operations, Infra-red night vision well and truly has its place as positive identification is a must for certain jobs such as those in urban or industrial areas.

16.01.2022 When your mate makes you a nice goat curry... "Is it spicy ?" "Nah"

15.01.2022 The guys at Red Fox vermin control down in Victoria had an absolute blinder on the foxes last night nailing 19 Foxes in one session. Phenomenal work ! Be sure to go and check out their page.

11.01.2022 Are you ready for Spring ? I was very excited to receive a parcel today from Paul Crabtree from www.foxcalls.com containing a few essential fox hunting goodies for the upcoming season. With vixens starting to pop their heads up again after a few weeks down the burrow and the pups sure to not be far behind, this delivery couldn't have come at a better time ! To say I am keen to get out in the field and test these out is an understatement. The chest harness is going to be part...icularly useful to contain either my thermal monocular for night time operations or binoculars for daytime expeditions (not to mention the plethora of whistles as well). As for the whistles, well...where does one start ? A whistle for just about every occasion to simulate a multitude of prey animals. These are sure to prove irresistable and get foxes coming from all over the place. And for those windy nights, a foxcalls beanie as well ! You ripper ! For anyone wanting to get some good quality foxing gear, head on over to www.foxcalls.com and take a look.

11.01.2022 Guess the length. I was scrolling through some of my old trail camera photos and this big boy just dominated everything. It is from a few years ago now and sadly I missed catching this bloke by less than half an hour These photos were taken on April 23rd a few years back so he was getting close to being ready to rock and roll for the upcoming rut. I was unable to find him again and have not seen him in the last few years. Hopefully he is hanging on the wall of some lucky hu...nter's trophy room. If anyone has seen this stag, or better yet, managed to knock him over, I'd love to know your story. Anyhow... throw some guesses out..how big do you think this guy grew ?

08.01.2022 Well...with the rain bucketting down and no hope of getting out for a fox, I was left stuck to the couch and was motivated enough to put a few hours aside to throw a bit of a compilation together of a few highlights (some old, some new + some cameos from mates) from expeditions over the last year and a bit. I hope you all get some enjoyment out of it. A big thanks to www.foxcalls.com for taking me under their wings and making part of the foxcalls prostaff team and also Sash from www.drifteddesigns.com.au for the great business card design !

07.01.2022 Bit cold outside lately...be sure to do the right thing and bring your deer inside and warm them up.

04.01.2022 I managed to make a quick trip to my ever reliable favourite fox property tonight and I was lucky enough to be able to test out the Pulsar xm30 monocular. With patchy rain on and off for most of the visit, it wasn't ideal conditions for the little thermal and I did find it challenging picking up my quarry using the xm30. Luckily I had my Pulsar Trail xq50 scope on my .204 ruger to do the heavy lifting and I was able to target and remove a trio of foxes before the rain well an...d truly set in. After thorough review of my activities over the last 21 months (Since diving into the NV/Thermal scope world), the 3 last night took the overall tally to 21 foxes in 21 months off just under 120 acres on that particular property. Most of those were shot as a southerly weather was fast approaching. Just goes to show that when most people are thinking about a night in on the couch, instead of a wet arse out in the paddock, sometimes it can really pay off to get out and give it a red hot crack. My overall impressions of the xm30 were that although it does a lot for the price point, it does struggle to pick out the "low to the ground" foxes at a distance and might not be ideal for its intended application for the night. For medium- larger sized game, it would be a great option if you are on a budget, but if you can save your pennies, I would strongly encourage any potential thermal buyers to pay once and cry once - get the best you can afford!
