25.01.2022 We can soon begin training together in class again! As from June 15th our classes will start again, with some restrictions in place. Please click through to this post on our site for all the details. https://www.illawarrakungfu.com.au//classes-return-with-r/

21.01.2022 Each time we come to and leave the school's training hall, we bow in respect to our founder, Chan Heung Gung and his direct bloodline descendants and the grandm...asters, Chan Koon Bak, Chan Yiu Chi and Chan Wan Hon. But have you noticed the framed Chinese calligraphy hanging on the wall underneath the photos and wondered of their origin and meaning? The story of the center piece: Chan Heung Gung, while training under the Shaolin monk Choy Fook Sim Si for 12 years was schooled in all the treasures of Shaolin. These included practicing Chan Buddhism, Traditional Chinese medicine and herbs, astrology and divination, Chinese Buddhist philosophy, Lohan Qigong and the famous Shaolin Kung Fu practice. While living in the Mountains of Law Fo Sarn, Chan Heung was also further exposed to great Taoist philosophy as Law Fo Shan mountain ranges hold many ancient Taoist temples and is a part of the holy Taoist sites in China. When Chan Heung returned to his village he was determined to improve his fellow clan villagers' lifes through education and good health. Chan Heung Gung set up the Wing Sing Tong", , translating to Successful Association" in his clan's village ancestral hall. Here he treated all local and surrounding villagers' ailments and sicknesses. At the same time he began teaching all the Chen clan his Shaolin Buddhist Kung Fu knowledge to build their health and stregnth of mind, body and soul. Within the clan ancestoral hall he hung the banner: - Hung Sing Gwoon", meaning "Training Hall of Great Sage". These are the writings on the middle panel hanging at the school. This was to remind all that stood before it that wise teachings are revered, both Buddhist and Taoist. The banner being in the centre is significant because this represents the central thoughts that we should hold in our hearts and minds. The two couplets on either side are the inspiring words of the great sages of the past to lift ourselves and our community out of ignorance with education and use our intuition to balance our life. Remember, in those days it was a daily practice. The couplets read: Greatness and power can only be achieved with both academic studies and experience. True understanding of martial arts requires both intuition and practice. Next time you are paying respect to our founder and ancestors, remember the meaning behind the couplets and know that although everyone's martial arts journey is different, hard work and dedication to the style will help you progress towards your goal, whatever it may be.

16.01.2022 We talk about this a lot in class. Worth thinking on.

16.01.2022 Firstly, I'm REALLY sorry about the late notice on this one. At the end last year - in pre-Covid times - we booked a family holiday with cousins and aunts and uncles and grandparents, to Queensland. When everything got turned upside down, we assumed we weren't going to be able to go. Now they've opened the borders, so we can go. More importantly, as we CAN go it means we HAVE to go, or we'll lose all the flights and accommodation and so on that's been booked. Of course, we'll... enjoy a holiday, but it does mean a lot of last minute re-organising. It also means that we'll have to close classes for the week that we're away, which is the week after next. So please note, there will be no classes between Monday November 16th and Friday November 20th. The last class will be Friday November 13th and then we're all back to normal on Monday November 23rd. Again, huge apologies for the late notice. Any queries send me a text or give me a call.

12.01.2022 This Bruce Lee quote seems very relevant to now. Something to consider.

11.01.2022 Online classes are going along okay. Certainly no substitute for a regular class, but better than nothing. Hopefully we'll start to see a slight easing of restrictions over the next few weeks and we can go back to training in person before too long. Meanwhile, we're going to take a week off from the online classes next week. So all normal classes this week as we've been doing, with the last class being on Friday May 1st. Then we'll have one week off and get back to the same online class timetable and format from Monday 11th May. Obviously, things are changing week to week with this virus, so if anything comes along that affects that schedule, I'll update everyone again. Any questions, reply here or give me a call or text.

11.01.2022 For most of its history, Kung Fu was practiced often out of necessity, especially during the more tumultuous periods of Chinese history. As such, the use of wea...pons was often more influential to its daily application than fighting unarmed. Choy Lee Fut, being a traditional style of Chinese Kung Fu, has an extensive range of weapons in our curriculum. Within the three syllabus levels, the Primary, Secondary and Tertiary, our system contains over 90 solo weapon forms. One of the Secondary level forms is the Gao Wan Dai Do, the Nine Ring Big Knife. It is a two handed long range weapon, characterised by whirlwind movements created by the momentum of the heavily weighted blade. See more

09.01.2022 Huge congratulations to Shanti, Shane, Dav, Mark, and Steve, who all passed their grading last night! Why didn't we take a photo? Let's get that photo in the New Year.

08.01.2022 Remembering our Founder, Chan Heung. If we don't remember and honour our ancestors, we are a tree with no roots.

07.01.2022 The really eagle-eyed might spot me in one of these photos! :)

07.01.2022 The Gim () is a double edged sword. Just like the other Yin energy weapons, internal power is found in soft external movement. Internal gates move external gates and redirect opponent's attack then strike. The energy is wind and lightning.

06.01.2022 Master Chen pays his respects to his Great Great Grandfather in the Ancestral school in King Mui. Honour the ancestors. Always remember those who came before and gave us the knowledge to enrich our lives, and for us pass on. Let each each generation keep the Shaolin tradition alive. (Photo by Sifu Paul Nomchong)

05.01.2022 There are over 90 solo weapon forms in the Choy Lee Fut System. Our students get exposure to various weapons through the standard curriculum as well as specialt...y seminars. After spending a bit of time learning the Yang energy weapons, our intermediate students are now focusing on learning the Yin energy weapons. One of such weapons is the Spear ("Cheung" ). It is a long range weapon. Internal power is found in soft external movement, using softness to overcome hard power, characterised by the elements of wind and lightning. See more

05.01.2022 Each and every one of us are on our own unique journey, yet we are joined by one passion - the passion for our Martial Art. The Choy Lee Fut system is limitless.... It is rooted deep in tradition, but is forever evolving. The more we learn, the more we realise how much more there is to learn. See more

01.01.2022 We're continuing with our classes following the various social distancing and sanitising guidelines we've been following since the start of July. As long as NSW numbers don't spike, we'll try to continue on like that. But we are making a couple of small time changes to classes. Monday morning Qi Gong will be from 9.30 to 10.30 am until further notice. The 9.00 to 9.30 am session won't be happening.... Thursday and Friday Qi Gong will remain as they are. Kids Kung Fu class will remain as normal. Adults Kung Fu classes on Monday and Wednesday will run from 6.00 to 7.30 pm until further notice. As we're not able to do partner or padwork at the moment, it makes sense to reduce the overall class duration for the time being and concentrate on weapons and forms. Any questions, as ever, give us a call or email.

01.01.2022 First of all, I'm so sorry about all the disruptions to classes recently. Obviously, a lot of it is entirely out of our control. It's infuriating that as soon as classes started back, I got sick and had to cancel again, but the safety of everyone is our primary concern. In reference to that, I went to have a COVID-19 test (a singularly unpleasant experience!) and the test came back NEGATIVE. So the good news is that I have a simple cold. I'm already feeling a bit better. We w...ill be taking a two week break over the school holidays, due to some family commitments, but the start of term 3 will hopefully see everything back on an even keel. Here are all the relevant class dates: ALL CLASSES will proceed as normal next week (Monday June 29th until Friday July 3rd) and then: Adult Kung Fu Classes Last class for Term 2 Wednesday 1st July First class back in Term 3 Monday 20th July Kids Kung Fu Classes Last class for Term 2 Monday 29th June First class back in Term 3 Monday 20th July Qi Gong/Tai Chi Classes Last class for Term 2 Friday 3rd July First class back in Term 3 Monday 20th July

01.01.2022 Fan (sin ) is the third Yin weapon our intermediate level students are learning at the moment. This is a close range weapon used to strike pressure points to stun and disrupt the chi flow. Characterised by the elements of wind, rain and lightning.

So please check these dates carefully: Adult Kung Fu Classes Last class for term 3 Wednesday 23rd September First class back for term 4 Wednesday 7th October...
