25.01.2022 19th August 5-6pm I am giving a one hour online talk via ZOOM on this fascinating subject of proprioception and the fascia's role as a sensory organ. I will be looking at what prorioception is; the relationship between the mechanoreceptors in our muscles and fascia that inform our proprioception - and how that influences our movement and the ways we respond; some of the new information emerging about fascia; and discussing the implications for us as therapists and how we unde...rstand what is happening as we are working with our clients. If you register I will also provide a CPE certificate that is accepted by the massage associations. You can register by emailing [email protected] To avoid being 'ZOOM bombed' I will send out details closer to the date with registration It will be taped and the link will be shared on Facebook if you would like to watch it later. I'll look forward to seeing you there. Hugh www.hughchurchward.com.au
20.01.2022 Here is the second video of Self Care exercises - this one for the PSOAS. If you have lower back stiffness or pain or you are feeling the effects of stress - and who isn't at the moment - this is the exercise for you. It also has a very brief introduction to Ortho-Bionomy as a way of explaining the rationale for doing these exercises the way we do. Enjoy.
20.01.2022 Only 1 week to go before I run the Fundamentals/Phase 4 in Ortho-Bionomy class in Cronulla (21-22 March). Don’t miss out. Go to my Facebook page and join the Event. If you’d like to talk to me drop me a message or call me on 0430 436 605. Hugh
16.01.2022 This is the latest self care video to assist with movement in the sacro-iliac joint (SIJ). Restriction in the SIJ can manifest as pain and stiffness in the lower back, pelvis, hips, buttocks, hamstrings and groin. For those who are spending a lot more time sitting as you work from home combine this with self care for the PSOAS which you will also find on YouTube or scroll down to an earlier post. Enjoy.
14.01.2022 Fundamentals/Phase 4 Ortho-Bionomy Training and Workshop
13.01.2022 Fundamentals/Phase 4 Ortho-Bionomy Training and Workshop Ortho-Bionomy works directly through the nervous system (the body's control system) to bring changes to the muscles, fascia, fluids and joints. It's also very calming for the nervous system itself. While it is the start of a full training you will learn techniques you can walk away with and start using in your practice straight away. It's ideal for massage and manual therapists, yoga teachers and practitioners, psychotherapists or anyone interested in wellbeing and the body. Click on the link above to get more information about this event.
12.01.2022 I love this quote from one of my teachers - Julie Henderson. When we have been in a state of shock or had a fright and gotten stuck in an over-aroused or 'frozen' state (or "scared out of our wits") we can't be forced or scared back into a state of equilibrium. When we feel safe, when we have nothing to fight, our ventral vagus* effortlessly re-asserts itself and brings us back to a restorative calmness from which we are able to engage with others and our circumstances. By en...gaging with and facilitating the body's inherent movement towards self-regulation Ortho-Bionomy creates the safety that allows us 'back into our bodies'. From here there are many possibilities. From a frozen or over-aroused state - which is hooked into survival - there are few. This is one of the reasons Ortho-Bionomy is so effective for assisting with PTSD, trauma, anxiety/nervousness and chronic pain. I am also qualified as a Somatic Psychotherapist so bring the understanding that comes with 20+ years of experience into my work with the body. For more information call me, Hugh on 0430 436 605 *The ventral vagus (VV) is the 'mammalian' part of the parasympathetic nervous system (itself a part of the autonomic nervous system - along with the sympathetic NS). When the VV is well toned we have a natural response towards social engagement (which is true for all mammals). As the tone is reduced that tendency to move towards others is gradually (or quickly) withdrawn and we eventually enter into a survival mode through fight/flight - or freeze if this fails. Helping calm brings the VV 'back online' from which we naturally start seeking out good company. This moving towards social engagement and being part of a community itself stimulates the VV even more and helps us to further self-regulate. It's actually more complex than that but in a nutshell...... Such elegance.
11.01.2022 Fundamentals/Phase 4 Ortho-Bionomy Training and Workshop This Ortho-Bionomy training/workshop is for yoga teachers/practitioners, massage and manual therapists, psychologists/psychotherapists and anyone interested in wellbeing and the body. This is what a colleague and yoga teacher told me about how Ortho-Bionomy contributed to her yoga practice - ... "It’s deepened my understanding of yoga and increased my interoceptive awareness The principles align with yoga in that you don’t impose anything on the body and follow the impulse that is there As a teacher it has deepened how I am able to notice more of what’s happening in the student’s body The training has increased my touch skills and brought my attention to what is safe touch - and safety in general. I thought I knew what that was but this has taken it to a different level It’s deepened my understanding of anatomy through my own felt experience but also through those touch skills It’s given me a different perspective of the body and deepened my understanding of it. I thought the fact that it enhanced and deepened what she already knew was pretty cool. For more information click on the link above. I hope to see you there.
11.01.2022 Due to the current situation with CoVID-19 I am making and uploading some self care clips onto YouTube so that anyone who can't get to a practitioner for pain or tension can still do something at home. This first one is for the lower back, pelvis and hips - don't be fooled by the simplicity of it. Also, while doing it resist the urge to look at your mobile phone or television but simply take the time to observe and notice what's happening. I will make and post more bit by bit... over the next few of weeks. I hope they'll become a useful resource later for those who need them too. I also hope the production of them will become more consistent - the past 2 days has almost driven me mad. Call me if you have any queries or questions - happy to do what I can over the phone on 0430 436 605. Cheers. Enjoy it. PS, this is also the last time I will mention CoVID -19 See more
11.01.2022 Somatic wellbeing is one of those things that is often a side effect of an Ortho-Bionomy session. It's not something one can strive for but emerges as we get to know ourselves in our body again. It's not an absence of pain or discomfort but a sense that things are right with the world - no matter what else may be going on. And there is plenty going on right now. For anyone interested in wellbeing, what it is and how Ortho-Bionomy can open the door to it - this study group by my friend and colleague Bruce is worth checking out. And there are CPE points available too.
11.01.2022 It must be quadratus lumborum (QL) day today. A friend in the UK just did a live post on this very thing. I’ll share it here as another option or adjunct to my self care exercise I posted earlier today. I’ll be playing around with this for the next couple of days.
10.01.2022 here is the next installment in the series of self care videos. They have all been for the lower back, pelvis and hips so far - I will be moving up the body soon so keep looking if you have neck and rib issues. For more videos you can visit my YouTube channel - Hugh Churchward. Call me if you'd like more online instruction or would like a session on 0430 436 605
09.01.2022 As gyms start to open again after shutdown we need to think about how to ensure we don't leap straight back in and end up with an injury. Technique and cohesive movement in our body is essential for this. Now is the time to start ironing out those shutdown niggles and thinking about how we move so that when the doors open we are ready to go. I'll look forward to joining you in that preparation. Call me on 0430 436 605 or book in at either the Thirroul Natural Healing Centre if you're in the Illawarra or Phoenix Holistic Centre in Bondi Junction. Hugh #Movement is Medicine
07.01.2022 19th August at 5-6pm Here is the link for the talk I am giving next Wednesday on proprioception and fascia as a sense organ. It's such a fascinating subject. If you would like to get a certificate for CPE points then register by dropping me an email at [email protected]. ... Thanks to those who have already registered. I look forward to seeing you there. https://us02web.zoom.us/j/6015371067
07.01.2022 FREE TRAINING VIDEO If you're interested in finding out more about Ortho-Bionomy - as a massage or manual therapist, as someone with pain/injury or as a curious bystander- this is for you. My friend and colleague Bruce Stark has kindly made this video and is offering it during this time when we are unable to run face to face trainings. It goes through all the basic (Phase 4) release positions for the spine. If you have any questions about anything in the video, would like t...o ask about future training or would like to try it for yourself then give me a call on 0430 436 605 https://vimeo.com/421419019
06.01.2022 I am presenting at the STARTTS Clinical Evening next week presenting a case study alongside Dr Tony Richardson where we are discussing Chronic Pain in Torture and Trauma Survivors. If you register CPD points are available. It would be great to 'see' you there. For more info click on the link below. https://www.startts.org.au/training/clinical-master-classes/
06.01.2022 This is one aspect of Ortho-Bionomy that I think really needs highlighting. So much happens quietly in the background and influences how we move, how we feel, how we respond to our environment moment by moment. Through exaggerating the distortion (slightly - which is generally also very, very comfortable) we are showing the body what it is doing, what the habitual patterns are and giving it the opportunity to respond in a way that allows something different to occur. When e...ngaging with the muscles and fascia through the proprioceptive 'system' It doesn't need to feel rough and it doesn't need to be painful. But it IS deeply satisfying. As different movements are then introduced the tissues are in a better position to change and develop a different set of movement patterns. This is essential to address pain and avoid injury in sport (whatever that may be), for dance and essential for those struggling with chronic or persistent pain. # Movement is medicine
05.01.2022 This says it all really - we know that for change to occur it has to make sense to us. When we feel as though someone is listening to us and gets us then that change is able to occur - sometimes quite effortlessly, other times with a great deal of intent. But it's the clarity from knowing how to listen that drives the intent. Movement and Change is Medicine!
03.01.2022 Here is the belated posting of the talk I did a couple of weeks ago. Thanks to all of those who helped me sort out the technical issues. https://vimeo.com/451851129
01.01.2022 I have been thinking lately about the changes I've noticed since CoVID-19 started. The time and space to study and reflect, spending more time with the family, actually having the opportunity to relax, walk the dog on the beach (he loved that everyone was around) and have my energy levels restored. As grateful as I am that life is returning more to 'normal' - albeit in a slightly restricted way - I am mindful of not forgetting the benefits of everything having slowed down. Es...pecially remembering the feeling of being 'in myself' instead of running around outside of myself. If you're starting to lose that feeling and want reminding then Ortho-Bionomy is an ideal way of being reminded to come back to yourself as you engage in life or work or....whatever. For an appointment or more information give me a call on 0430 436 605 or phone me at either the Thirroul Natural Healing Centre in Thirroul or Phoenix Holistic Centre in Bondi Junction.
01.01.2022 Here's another self care exercise for the lower back and pelvis - with a variation for the mid back or lower thoracics. It's quite a long series of clips with explanations so feel free to flick through to the second half if it is mid back exercise you are after. It is worth listening to both the introduction and the conclusion for tips on what we are doing and integration following the exercise. Apologies for the sound - it is still a work in progress
