18.01.2022 ILO means "joy" in Finnish and at ILO Norlane, we believe that joy is the fundamental element of learning. Our Centre fuses the best of both worlds; combining the Australian Early Years Learning Framework with the HEI Schools Curriculum, a world-renowned Finnish early education program co-founded by the University of Helsinki. We are now accepting enrolments for 2021. Call or visit us to find out more!

15.01.2022 Seeing our children flourishing proves that ILO, "joy" in Finnish, is the key for effective and meaningful learning. Every child at ILO Norlane is provided with a joyful and safe learning environment that recognises their strengths and interests. With our daily activities, supporting educators and inspiring learning spaces, we promote children's holistic well-being and encourage children to develop confidence and positive self-esteem.
14.01.2022 We are so excited to welcome amazing educator Brooke into our ILO Norlane team! Hi guys, my name is Brooke! I have been working as an Early Childhood educator for 2 years, and I hold my Certificate III in Early Childhood Education. I love working with all ages and believe that Early Childhood education is highly important to all children. What I love most about my job is helping the children learn and I find it very rewarding to watch them grow into special little people. ... When I am not working, I like spending time travelling overseas, going on road trips, shopping, and watching lots of Netflix! I am so excited to meet you all!
13.01.2022 Learning happens everywhere. Actively exploring the world around us develops our understanding of nature and its organisms. We learn how and why to be respectful, gentle and kind to them all. Even as young explorers, the children at ILO Norlane are provided with the opportunity to connect with nature. This way, we encourage them to practise a sustainable and healthy way of living.
11.01.2022 We would like to introduce you our Finnish mentor teacher Roosa. We are very excited to welcome Roosa into our team to replace Niina, who will be starting maternity leave soon. Come and say hello (or as we say in Finnish "Hei") to Roosa! "Hi there! My name is Roosa Kuusisto and, as you can probably guess from my name, I'm a teacher from Finland. I came to Australia at the end of February this year. Before that, I worked as a Finnish education specialist in the Middle East and... Sweden. As ILO Norlane's new mentor teacher, I will be working together with the educators and bringing the inspiration from the Finnish way of learning into the daily activities. I love learning and exploring the world with others. By promoting each other's strengths and working together as a team, we develop good self-awareness and essential thinking skills. My passion as a teacher is to work towards equal education where every student can feel appreciated as they are. I look forward to meeting you all and sharing ideas about early childhood education!"
11.01.2022 Engaging in self-help skills. Taking care of both personal and common hygiene, and helping with cleaning up after a meal or play, are essential self-help skills for children to learn in early years. At ILO, we recognise opportunities to develop these important skills through play. This way, engaging in learning becomes more meaningful and fun for the little learners. By taking care of the common environment and helping each other, we also promote our own well-being, social skills, and responsibility. As the theme of January at ILO Norlane is Precious water, we encourage our children to explore water responsibly in daily activities. By observing everyday situations where water is used and discussing ways how to save water, children develop their critical thinking skills and environmental awareness.
09.01.2022 At ILO Norlane we provide many opportunities for outdoor play, vigorous play on outdoor climbing equipment, water play and more. ' Free play' on this sort of equipment naturally inspires children to be active. Rather than standing in line waiting a turn, children can use their bodies in self-directed play. Climbing gives children opportunities to develop a variety of skills and to exercise various systems of their bodies: As well as being a challenge climbing can be fun.
09.01.2022 Dad, I made you a song about my day at ILO! By singing various songs related to our daily life and experiences at ILO Norlane, we encourage our children to develop their musical and linguistic expression. Children enjoy discovering new rhymes, rhythms, melodies, and instruments as that is a natural and fun way for them to learn about the world around them. Singing and playing music also enhances the feeling of togetherness and cultural identity.
08.01.2022 At ILO we encourage children to explore creativity and critical thinking through art. Here, for example, we discovered that there are many ways to use a paintbrush in order to paint different shapes and textures. By singing together "There's a spot over here and a spot over there" we learnt to paint dots, lines, and even letters. It was a spotty kind of day!
07.01.2022 We would love to invite you to our kinder room to join this lovely story time with our Centre Manager Lisa. Enjoy!
05.01.2022 Today we get to meet our educator Michelle. Welcome to ILO Norlane Michelle, we are very lucky to have you onboard! "It is much excitement that I join the ILO Norlane team. I have been an Early Childhood educator for over 20 years and am thrilled to be taking the next step in my career with ILO. I am undertaking the Hei teaching certificate from the University of Helsinki and embracing the opportunity of learning their school curriculum and Implementing it at ILO Norlane. I am passionate about supporting children’s emotional development and positive self-image as I believe this is the window to all areas of their Early Education and development. When a child feels supported, safe and secure they can achieve anything and I look forward to being on their journey with them, a partnership in self learning and self-discovery."
05.01.2022 Today’s HEI Schools Home activity is floating and sinking experiment. This activity supports your child in practicing to distinguish between a hypothesis and a conclusion and it offers your child possibilities to explore floating and sinking. For this activity you will need two sheets of A4 paper of different colors, 5 items that float, 5 items that do not float, camera, water tray or large bowl and some water. Select five items that float and five items that do not. Find two... sheets of A 4 paper of different colours. Write ‘FLOAT‘ on one and ‘SINK‘ on the other. Set up these and other required materials in an area where the experiment can be executed. Explain to your child that you are making an experiment. Observe the two sheets of paper with your child. Ask them to explain what floating and sinking means. Guide them to the conclusion that some items stay on the surface of a liquid, that is they float, whereas others submerge in the water, and descend, that is, they sink. Retrieve and name one of the items that you chose for the experiment. Ask your child to think, whether the item will float, or sink. Place the item either on the ‘FLOAT’ piece of paper, or on the ‘SINK‘ piece of paper, according to your child's guess. Repeat this process with the other nine items. Instruct your child to take a picture of the sheets of paper gathering the items that have been hypothesized to either float or sink. Ask your child to choose an item and bring it to the water tray or large bowl. Instruct your child to place their item in the water. Guide them to observe whether it floats or sinks. Once the outcome is clear, instruct your child to place it on the correct FLOAT or SINK sheet of paper. Repeat these steps with the remaining items. Once you have found out which items sink and which of them float and have placed them on the correct sheets of paper, gather around the sheets of paper. Compare the results of the experiment to the original hypotheses. Discuss the results. Why did some of the items float, even though your child expected them to sink? https://youtu.be/3F2CsEMQh4U

04.01.2022 At ILO Nolane we have been learning about colours. Today we created a rainbow fruit platter for morning tea. Teaching children about colors and shapes is a great way to give them some vocabulary for describing the world around them. This opens up new and exciting avenues for verbal communication.

02.01.2022 Happy World Children's Day 2020!
02.01.2022 At ILO Norlane we follow HEI curriculum. HEI means Hello in Finnish and HEI Curriculum brings the Finnish early education model to our everyday practices. University of Helsinki has strong impact on the HEI Curriculum and this allows us to have access to the latest research on children’s cognitive development and the future needs of education. These insights are constantly used to improve the curriculum so that we have access to the deep pedagogy that makes schools followin...g HEI Curriculum unique. The pedagogical team also uses the feedback they receive from all schools to continuously learn and update the curriculum to best serve the schools’ needs. HEI Curriculum is based on project-based learning strategy and follows specific themes. The curriculum allows our educators to follow children’s interest related to the theme and supports practices that are encouraging our children to explore, be active and creative. We are happy to discuss more about the HEI curriculum and how it looks at ILO Norlane!
02.01.2022 Are you ready for an adventure across the sea? Continuing with water-related topics, our pedagogical theme for February at ILO Norlane is Life on the Ocean Wave.
