25.01.2022 COVID Update - Greenslopes Private Hospital We are following the advice of Queensland Health and increasing the use of PPE (personal protective equipment) in ...our hospital due to the COVID-19 cluster impacting the Greater Brisbane area. All patients, staff and approved visitors will now be required to wear a mask entering the hospital and must wear it when in public areas of the hospital. Everyone who enters the hospital must undergo temperature screening and complete electronic screening via the QR code scanning system on entry. Our staff are available in all entry areas to assist you. In addition, visitors are currently not permitted at the hospital, with some exceptions for maternity patients, end-of-life visits or on a case-by-case basis. Thank you for your support as we work through this time together to keep everyone safe in our care.

24.01.2022 Queensland will reopen to Greater Sydney at 1am on December 1. It’s been 28 days since New South Wales has had an unlinked case. Note: Victoria passes the 28-day mark tomorrow, if all goes well, it should also be open at 1am on December 1.

23.01.2022 #BREAKING: Brisbane City Council plans to permanently change its local fire pit laws and temporarily extend a trial to allow residents to use them with fewer re...strictions. Previously backyard fires were only allowed with a permit or unless they were lit under specific guidelines - including being used to cook food. Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner says rules will still remain to ensure fire pits are used responsibly and safely. "This Includes restrictions on the size of the fire pits that you can have, distance from boundary of the property, keeping it away from overhanging trees and vegetation and also the type of material that is burnt as well," he said.

22.01.2022 The pioneer families of Rocky Water Holes and surrounding areas had their challenges and rewards as did most new Australians. One man who caught my attention wa...s William Coote. He was born in London c1822, studied and qualified as both an architect and a civil engineer, married Louisa Duesbury Ford in 1849, then in 1852 they and their children moved to Tasmania. Within 2 years William became insolvent and was imprisoned for 12 months, as was the punishment at the time. He recovered from this, worked in Hobart and Ballarat, then he and his wife and 3 children made their way to Brisbane, where he was responsible for the design of the Brisbane Town Hall in Queen Street. Many more of his accomplishments can be found in his biography in the link below http://adb.anu.edu.au/biography/coote-william-3257 The Coote family purchased a property where the Rocklea Show Grounds is now, and lived there for a number of years. The farm was given the name Salisbury, and it is from this that the neighbouring railway station and later suburb of Salisbury acquired its name. William was convinced that the area showed great potential for the silk industry and planted mulberry trees all over his property. Sadly his wife died in 1870 and was buried on the farm, with a headstone. Many years later it was discovered that her headstone had been removed and was being used as a cover for a drain. Once this vandalism was made public, the headstone was placed at Gods Acre, Archerfield, where it is today. Louisas remains have not been located, but are likely still buried in the area of the Show Grounds. By 1874 the silk venture was flourishing, however shortly before William was to receive a government grant, a consignment of diseased silkworms from Italy decimated his entire mulberry crop, and probably any others in surrounding areas. William then tried to pursue a legal career, but was refused admission to the bar, possibly because of his time in jail in Tasmania, or perhaps because he was a known agitator and very outspoken. He became editor of The Observer and when it was taken over by the Courier Mail he moved to Townsville to work as a journalist. Over the years William wrote The History of the Colony of Queensland. Volume 1 (1770-1859) was published but unfortunately volume 2 didnt survive past manuscript status. Volume 1 is very interesting and often quite amusing, William was known for not holding back, and this is apparent in some of his comments. In one section he describes Captain Logan as alternately exploring and botanising, and flogging, in the Moreton Bay District. Its available to read online as one of the Project Gutenberg of Australia ebooks. William Coote died after surgery in Townsville in 1889.

18.01.2022 Are you having problems with your glasses fogging up when you wear a mask? A Melbourne surgeon has given her top tip to stop it happening. Dr Julie Miller pos...ted this wisdom from "generations of surgeons" on her Twitter account. She uses micropore tape, which you can find for about $2 at any chemist. Tape the mask along the bridge of your nose and cheeks and put your glasses on top. "Cant operate with fogged lenses," she said. Another way is to put a folded tissue across the bridge of your nose under the mask. Dr Miller added that you should wash your hands before masking up and after removing your mask. Then put it straight into the bin if its disposable, or a plastic bag if reusable. "Pretend the front is covered in paint - dont touch," she said. Its not mandatory to wear a mask in Queensland, but our Chief Health Officer said its appropriate to wear one in situations where maintaining social distancing is not possible, like on public transport or in a busy shopping centre.
