25.01.2022 TMJ 2: I would really love to know what conditions you have that youd like more information on. Maybe you dont have a condition but youve got pain and you dont know what it is thats causing it. Obviously your GP is your first point of call but sometimes we are told oh you have XYZ and youre told you need to see a Physio or Chiro or specialist or even your dentist or an orthodontist, and before you know it you are spending lots of money and still in pain. Sometimes you ...Continue reading
24.01.2022 This past week I had two patients with the same limitations in their shoulder. It was rather unique in the way the restriction presented and it was something new I personally had not seen. I had noticed a similar pain starting to develop in my own left arm that I was concerned would develop into a full frozen shoulder if I didnt get onto finding a solution. Thankfully with great instruction from my Applied Myoskeletal Therapy Instructor and training Im feeling very excite...d to see these two new patients next week #AppliedMyoskeletalTherapy #AMT #AMTRocks #GetTrained The long head of the biceps is at risk of injury and degenerative changes due to its proximity to the rotator cuff and the acromium. Since the long head of the biceps can act as a secondary stabilizer of the shoulder, it is also subject to injury during high speed overhead movements; repetitive overhead movements; or forceful shoulder activities when the elbow is straight. Specific injuries may include inflammation and irritation of the bicep tendon itself; a problem with the bicep tendon in conjunction with one of the rotator cuff tendons; or detachment of part of the tendon from the attachment point (SLAP tear).1 Bicep tendon degeneration and/or tearing can cause significant shoulder discomfort and dysfunction. https://www.uwhealth.org//sportsmed/SM_biceps_tenodesis.pdf
23.01.2022 TMJ 48: The difference between OPG X-rays, CT Scans, CBCT Scans, EOS Scans and MRIs I’ve had each one of these (not necessarily for the jaw) and in another post I’ll share the photos. 1. An OPG (Orthopantomogram) is a panoramic or wide view x-ray of the lower face, which displays all the teeth of the upper and lower jaw on a single film. It demonstrates the number, position and growth of all the teeth including those that have not yet surfaced or erupted. A dentist will nor...Continue reading
23.01.2022 TMJ 64: A video showing what micro moves to do over your Auricular Nerves that correlate with certain Acupressure Points that lie over or very near to the Great Auricular and Posterior Auricular Nerves (see TMJ 63). These moves are being done in the hope of diminishing or healing my tinnitus. https://youtu.be/1oJrOS1Dops I show how I do the moves at 7:30 onwards. Regarding pressure, I choose to work firm. Others may disagree, but it is what I have found works when it comes... to TMJ. Obviously if it causes you too much pain, please stop or lessen the degree to which you are applying pressure. If you find it irritates or causes you more harm, take at least a days break before doing the moves again or stop completely. Listen to your body, as it will talk to you. If you are not getting a positive result, or feel nothing, ie, no improvement at all, then it's probably not for you. I feel improvement with a lessening degree to the intensity of sound and / or it goes away completely. Sadly it does come back, but for me this tells me it's working and I'm onto something. I shall keep going till its gone, just like I did with the clicking. Also, these points were tender to touch for me and I heard a sound like bubble wrap or Rice Krispies when applying pressure in the front of my left ear where my tinnitus is, which I do not have in my right ear. The degree of tenderness has lessened the more frequently I have done these moves and as time passes. Ron Phelan my instructor in Cranial Considerations - TMJ says this regarding pressure: "...the pressure is relative to the structure that you are going to effect by the move. As such, the depth of the pressure will be altered accordingly. This will vary from light to firmer during the correction process. If inadequate or too much pressure is used at the relative points, the outcome of the correction will not be right. As such the most positive benefit possible will not be achieved." - Ron Phelan www.pascseminars.com. Please do let me know if this helps you or if you have found ways in which to resolve your tinnitus. Sharing is caring
23.01.2022 TMJ 39: Importance of posture - How to fix rounded shoulders. As per yesterday’s post, having a misaligned TMJ can have far reaching affects throughout the whole body. You just have to ask anyone with a TMJ Disorder. When your TMJ is displaced that directly affects your muscles of your face and head. When your muscles are unbalanced, your entire kinetic chain is disrupted and this affects all movement patterns and can lead to pain and injury anywhere else within the body. ... In my opinion, the two most important things as a TMJD sufferer that you need to do first is: 1. Get the whole of your skeletal structure into symmetry via the muscles, spondylogenic reflex and nerves. (Bones without muscles are a pile on the floor - that’s why cracking bones alone won’t get your body into symmetry). This is easy for a trained Therapist such as myself. Neuromuscular re-education is an important factor for you to learn to keep your body symmetrical. 2. Get your TMJ into its optimal functional position of centric relation. Requires specialised training. If you can’t get to a TMJ Specialist who is also trained in Myoskeletal Therapy, then here is an exercise program that I recommend for correcting rounded shoulders. As I mentioned, I had forward head position, rounded shoulders and was a chest breather. The rounded shoulders took the longest to correct. Even though my posture is good now, when I tried out these exercises it felt incredibly good. 21.01.2022 Ive been seeing a lot of different posts with this woman and I love her. Shes done a lot of posts on how racism was created. Very educational if you can search her out. I have seen her experiment in the classroom segregating the children by their eye colour to teach them what it feels like to be treated differently based on something within them that they cannot control. Here she is doing the same thing with adults on Oprah. Check it out. So interesting. Im currently lear...ning a new psychotherapy to work on the things we can control like anxiety and fear. Ill share more details once I have completed it and passed. https://youtu.be/5NHeFgaVWs8 Edit: Heres the original experiment if you havent seen it in its entirety. https://youtu.be/oGvoXeXCoUY
21.01.2022 TMJ 20: The importance of deep sleep and a possible help/cure for bruxism. You can not have deep quality sleep if you are mouth breathing. This just isnt taught and should be. The tongue has two places to be when you sleep. One is on the roof of your mouth and the other is falling into the back of your throat (any snorers out there?) If the tongue is falling into the back of your throat its impairing and reducing your airways and this is going to increase the risk of havi...ng a restriction when breathing during sleep which can cause hypopnea (a reduction of breathing) or you can completely stop breathing during sleep (sleep apnea). Thats why training in tongue position is important. Be conscious about it. Learning to breathe through your diaphragm as per my previous posts is really important to increase your lung capacity (any asthmatics here?) The nose is connected to the diaphragm so get these two things working together so your throat doesnt collapse. Carbon dioxide in the blood plays a role in the functioning of the muscles in the throat. Nitric Oxide which we breathe in only through the nose also plays a role in this. Are you beginning to see how important all these basic functions are? So when it comes to sleep, breathing through the nose is king. Harnessing nitric oxide, more stable breathing, the connection to the diaphragm, better likely to have correct tongue resting position, sleep is deeper, less snoring, less obstructive sleep apnea, waking up more alert. - Patrick McKeown Who wants all of that? Me. What about you? You need to be consciously aware and catch yourself out breathing through your mouth during the day and stop that. Find yourself breathing through the mouth, close your mouth immediately and start breathing through the nose. Please watch this video by Patrick McKeown. https://youtu.be/MLjVIAtgKvo Dr Frank Seaman created Sleep easy tape and he found it relieved his patients with bruxism which is a major contributor to TMJD. I dont have bruxism but I know many who do. I purchased some to test it out and Ill let you know what I think. Ill know its helping because there wont be wet dribble marks on my pillow, I wont wake with dry mouth requiring water through the night and Ill wake more alert. Oh how Im looking forward to all of that. https://www.simplybreathe.com/
21.01.2022 TMJ 12: Is your click really your jaw? Maybe not. It could be Eustachian Tube Dysfunction and not TMJD. I had a newish patient recently tell me that she only had a click on chewing. I had not heard of that before. I felt her TMJ on opening and closing and felt no click. I treated her as I would normally to get her jaw into its optimal functional position of centric relation and she then drove the four and a half hours back home. She told me the treatment held for a week w...here she had no clicking which was a lot longer than any other therapy she had tried. I then went to a friends dinner party and discovered she too had clicking only when chewing. My patient then came and saw me again and we had two more treatments. This time though I researched causes. I discovered Eustachian Tube Dysfunction can cause this. I sent her a number of videos and told her I thought it could be this. I asked her to start doing these exercises. https://youtu.be/1-SZ1r1dnho That was on the 1st of August. Last night (19 days later) she told me she is having the best results so far and feels shes getting there as her jaw is feeling a bit better. Just like with my click, you just have to keep going with the exercises to watch and feel the improvements come. As always consistency is everything when it comes to healing. So do it daily as instructed. Here are some other relevant videos: How to tell if the click is really your jaw https://youtu.be/USmIL7OfoSc (ignore the beginning when he says is the click your teeth - I think anyone with TMJD or not knows if its its their teeth or not making the click). Let me know below if you feel clicking only when chewing.
20.01.2022 TMJ 4: Are you aware that your tongue has a correct position? Id be interested to know where your tongue sits. Please comment below or PM me. Does the tip of your tongue rest on your hard palate? Or Does it touch your front teeth? Or... Does it touch the point/opening between both upper and lower teeth? Or Does it touch just your bottom teeth? Does the rest of your tongue touch the full roof of your mouth? Or Does it sit on the floor of your mouth? Tongue position affects your TMJ, your breathing (nose or mouth breather particularly when sleeping), affects your nervous system and the actual shape of your face. Its actually really important and if its not in the right place then you need to exercise your tongue muscles to teach it to go back into its rightful position. Did you know? ..... The soft patty of flesh we call the tongue is not just one muscle, its a conglomeration of eight separate muscles. Unlike other muscles, such as the bicep, tongue muscles dont develop around a supporting bone. Rather, they intertwine to create a flexible matrix, forming what is called a muscular hydrostat; this structure is similar to an octopuses tentacles or an elephants trunk. Four muscles in the matrix, called the extrinsic muscles, anchor the tongue to structures in the head and neck. One muscle holds on to the base of the skull, another connects to a bone in the throat, there is a muscle that grabs on to the lower jaw and another wrapped around the palate. These propel the tongue from side to side, front to back and up and down. https://www.scientificamerican.com//fact-or-fiction-the-t/. If you want to know how to get your tongue into its rightful place comment below or PM me.
20.01.2022 TMJ 19: Children and mouth breathing - it causes TMJD issues later in life. Observe whats happening with your children and their breathing. Do you see them sleeping with their mouths open? Do they have dribble stains on their pillow cases? Do they snore? Do they wake up tired and irritable? Are they lacking concentration? Do they have chapped lips? Do they sigh a lot? Do they take deep breaths between sentences? Do they have bad breath? Do they have dark circles under their... eyes? Are their teeth overcrowded? Do they have enlarged tonsils? Do they have a deviated septum? Are their lips always open? Do they suck on their cheeks? Are their noses always blocked on one side or both? When they talk do they stop to breathe through their nose or do they continue to talk and breathe through their mouth? Do you see their tongue push through their teeth at rest or when talking? Is their tongue tied? Teach them how to unblock their nose using the Buteyko Method. https://youtu.be/vKKO8DC3cgo Teaching young children to breathe through their mouths may require taping. https://youtu.be/abvmiBP3xnI Teaching a child to breathe through their belly with a book lying on their belly. https://youtu.be/AByFE1E7bks As healthcare professionals, we are afforded the perfect opportunity to observe whether patients habitually breathe through their mouths, and to offer practical and effective life-changing recommendations. And as parents you can too.
20.01.2022 With anxiety amongst young people on the rise, many are choosing to start smoking marijuana, as a supposed coping mechanism, as young as whilst still at school. There is no doubt that it is more stressful today in homes and at school, especially with Covid19. I highly encourage everyone to have a starter conversation on the damage to their young brains caused by early marijuana usage. This article by psychiatrist Dr Daniel Amen encourages all parents and carers to show this... photo to their young tweens and teens. https://www.amenclinics.com/spect-gallery/addictions/ By sharing the images in this blog, you may be able to help them break their belief that pot is harmless. When teens see what substances can do to their brain function, it helps them develop brain envy. When young people realize that with a better brain comes a better life, they are more likely to want to take care of their brain with healthy habits. As someone who has a stepson who chose this path, I know only too well the damage to him and those around him. And please note, I do believe in the benefits of medicinal marijuana without THC. This post is not about that. This is about the damaging effects of children smoking pot. There is a very significant difference. If you or your children are suffering with stress, Bowen Therapy is an amazing first step to relaxing yours and their autonomic nervous system. Please call a Bowen Therapist today. It has to be experienced to be understood. If you havent already, please watch this intro to a documentary that is being made about Bowen Therapy. https://youtu.be/7dYsK3yMrnE

20.01.2022 TMJ 10: Do you usually chew on a favoured side? My preference was to chew on the left. And guess what? My TMJ click is on the right. What side do you normally chew and what side is your TMJD? Post comments below. After reading the following articles, each time we eat from now on, we should chew one mouthful on the right and then the next mouthful on the left and continue alternating as such till finished. ... If you touch your cheeks while keeping the jaws clamped, and notice that there is a definite difference between left and right, you can be pretty sure that you have an imbalance of the masseter muscles. https://www.sdispinecenter.com//tmj-facial-asymmetry-and-p When food is placed in the mouth the tongue usually places it on either the left or right side for chewing. The right and left temporomandibular joints (TMJ) both guide and support the mandible when chewing. Studies have found that the TMJ on the opposite side from where the food is placed receives the majority of the stress. So when food is chewed on the right the TMJ on the left is under the most stress and vice versa. http://www2.readingeagle.com/article.aspx?id=329950 Chewing side preference has a detrimental effect on the TMJ of the corresponding side and is also related to lateral facial asymmetry, which suggests that examination and recording of chewing side preference merit consideration in routine dental examination and treatment planning. http://www.jofs.in/article.asp
18.01.2022 TMJ 63: In the Search of a Tinnitus Cure - Explore the Auricular Nerves, Muscles and Acupressure Points in this area in the hope of improving or eliminating Tinnitus sounds. Further to my posts TMJ 59 - 62, putting together Muscles, Auricular Nerves and Accupressure Points from Traditional Chinese Medicine, check out the image below. Hopefully this helps you to explore your own head and face to find points that hurt on you, that relate to Tinnitus, that you can manipulate, ...hold and/or stretch daily until it no longer hurts and hopefully an improvement in your tinntius is felt. I’m certainly feeling some improvements, so I’ll keep going. For help with location of points, I viewed this site: www.acupuncture.com. The list of conditions these acupressure points help are: Common Cold, Deafness, Dizziness, Dysfunction of the Maxillary Joint, Epilepsy, Epistaxis (Nose Bleed), Headaches, Hemiplegia (paralysis on one side of the body), Infantile Convulsions, Limitation of the Shoulder, Manic Psychosis, Migraines, Nasal Congestion, Otitis Media (ear infection), Otorrhea (ear drainage), Redness, Rigidity and Pain of the Neck, Rhinorrhea (Nasal Drip), Scrofula (Inflamed and Irritated Lymph Nodes in the Neck), Swelling of the Cheek, Swelling and Pain of the Eye, Tinnitus, Toothache, Trismus (Lock Jaw), Vertigo, Wry Face, Wry Mouth. To get an accurate location and more details about each point start here then do your own Google searches: http://www.acupuncture.com/educat//smallintestine/si19.htm Credit also goes to Visible Body, Human Anatomy Atlas for the main image.
18.01.2022 TMJ 5: Before I begin sharing neuromuscular re-education to help you teach your tongue to sit in its correct position, here is the correct position. The correct position of your tongue is the tip of your tongue should be on your hard palate, not touching your teeth at all, and the full tongue should touch the roof of your mouth. Lips should be lightly closed. The teeth should be slightly apart at all times for the muscles of the jaw to be relaxed. So they shouldnt be even ...slightly touching. Slightly touching teeth is still considered as clenching and as such your jaw muscles will tighten over time. Your front upper teeth should be slightly forward to your lower teeth. We tongue thrusters (those of us whose tongue touch our teeth) and especially those of us who suffer with TMJD need to consistently and regularly work on getting our tongue into its rightful position. Ill do a separate post on symptoms associated with an incorrectly positioned TMJ (our temporomandibular joint). To locate the correct place, 1. Say Nah, nah, nah, nah, nah. Thats the starting position for the tip of our tongue on the hard palate. 2. Say the sound for N continuously Nnnnnnnnnnnnnn whilst gently pushing your full tongue to the roof of your mouth (use a sucking motion). Do that often until it feels more comfortable and natural. Stay tuned for more tips coming. All aspects of our body need to be in its correct position and our tongue is often not considered and is a forgotten part of our anatomy. We also need to learn how to get the root of our tongue back, and how to swallow correctly. Then we can learn how to stop jaw clicking, the correct head position, how to self correct our neck vertebrae, loosening our traps, weight loss tips that dont involve heavy exercise because when we are in pain we cant, and seeking out Therapists who can correctly assess your body. Comment below any thoughts or questions.

17.01.2022 Some angels come in the human form. This is such a feel good story I wanted to share it. I treated a returning patient today who I had only previously treated once back in 2018. She had been suffering with pins and needles in her hand on and off for 11 years and persistently for the previous three weeks. I hadnt heard from her till I saw her today. She had been healed with just that one treatment. Today she came with pain in between her shoulder blades and she could feel ...her pins and needles coming back. I treated her jaw only today as it was not in its optimal functional position of centric relation. Her jaw was hypermobile and was clicking. From previous experience I knew this would help her upper back pain and I was confident that her pins and needles would resolve since her neck at C1/2 was involved in her having a longer leg. At the end of the treatment she felt so good she wanted to pay it forward and pay for my next patient. I couldnt believe it. Her heart was so full and she was so generous and yet she is not at all rich. She said she had tried to convince her friends to come but they were stuck in their ways so she wanted to pay for someone else. My next patient is a very sick lady who has had to give up working due to her condition and her pain. She was eternally grateful and wants me to pass on her thanks to this beautiful angel.
17.01.2022 TMJ 38: TMJ and the whole body connection My Applied Myoskeletal Therapy Instructor, John Garfield wrote this article (photos below) and kindly allowed us to share it with others openly. It helps to explain how the whole body is connected and why you need a skilled therapist to be able to locate the cause of your symptoms and not just treat where your pain is. How often have you had a treatment where they treated your sore muscle only to have short term relief and for the p...ain to return requiring multiple treatments? John explains this why, well: Why? Because the muscle was only a symptom, no more than just a messenger, and is way down in the pecking order of causal hierarchy, behind for example, peripheral nerves, nerve roots, spondylogenic (within the spine) reflexes, dura, TMJ, cranial sutures and associated fascia, ligaments and joint receptors. In fact, we can be tricked at times into thinking the origin of an injury is straight forward, and I give the example of a rotator cuff injury while playing tennis. What may appear to be a direct soft tissue injury resulting from being put under load on the court can often be traced back to a primary structural dysfunction elsewhere in the body. These primary structural dysfunctions leave the person susceptible to injury, be it originating from a single event or a gradual buildup of minor dysfunctions over time that the body cleverly adapts and compensates for, that is until it runs out of adaption and breaks down, often while performing the simplest of actions. My lower back just seized up on me as I bent forward to rinse my mouth, I had no prior signs! How can that happen?. I like to refer to the saying - ‘The straw that broke the camel’s back’. The respected and inspirational Dr. John Upledger D.O. was once asked by a student how long a ‘sacral generated’ cranial lesion he was demonstrating in class could be expected to hold. He responded by saying that if you only addressed the compensation, in this case the cranial dysfunction, without correcting the origin of the dysfunction in the pelvis it would probably only hold about ten days to 14 days at most! Be sure to check out the fourth image showing The Lovett Brother Relationship Chart. * Lovett Brother Relationship: Developed by Orthopedic Surgeon Dr. Robert W. Lovett. He discovered the reciprocal relationship between certain vertebrae and pelvic and cranial bones. When one of the ‘brothers’ or reciprocal ‘partners’ is misaligned so will be its partner, with or without pain. This is a two-way street and either one can be the instigator that takes its partner along for the ride. Examples are Coccyx & Sphenoid, Sacrum & Occiput, L5 & C1. Pain is not a good indicator of which osseous segment is the primary cause. I am looking forward to doing John’s upcoming Body Reading Course. www.appliedmyoskeletal.com.au. AMT rocks
17.01.2022 Sometimes I want to post about other things not related to TMJD that I feel are of interest or just as important. I also want to index them. So in future as an example the next post might be ITEM 62, ITEM 63 then TMJ 64 and so on.
16.01.2022 TMJ 50: How Applied Myoskeletal Therapy works to straighten out your body Attached is a photo of a man from the US who has given me permission to publish his photograph and testimonial. The correction in his body as you can see from the before and after photo was done using Applied Myoskeletal Therapy Neuromuscular Re-education; all done purely via text. ... I’m in Brisbane Australia and he is in the US. Doing 1-2 hour online Skype sessions were taking up valuable time so I’ve had to find less time consuming ways to help people. As you can see his head still needs correcting but the rest of his body is now in symmetry giving him a far better chance at recovery. In fact, due to the correction made he no longer has the severe back pain he complained of and his Meralgia Paresthetica (tingling, burning, numbness pain in his outer thigh) which he felt in his left outer quad is much improved and he feels it will go. Doing this correction via text is not easily done or noticed for everyone. But in this man’s case his PSIS is easily seen through his dimples in his sacrum, and his pelvis was easily seen by him being in good shape. But even without, improvements can be done and you can be taught how to keep your body in symmetry so the benefits are great as you are given a lifetime skill which will always be at your disposal. And if you are dedicated to your own well-being, your body will thank you. If you are a Therapist and have not yet done John Garfield’s lumbar and pelvis workshop through the College of Applied Myoskeletal Therapy I highly recommend that you do. If you are a patient, I recommend you seek one out. You can only start to heal once your body is in symmetry. When your body is in symmetry you give the team of people that you work with the best chance of healing you fully. Please also do take a look at my post TMJ 46 where other AMT Practitioners, TMJ Specialists and Bowen Therapists are adding their contact details for you to see if there is someone near you. https://appliedmyoskeletal.com.au/ Applied Myoskeletal addresses many conditions including: * Pelvic Tilt * Unilateral & bilateral pelvic rotations * Symphysis pubis dysfunction * Functional leg length discrepancy * Vertebral rotations * Sacral lateral deviation All these corrections, in turn, will help your TMJ. Now that I’ve reached 50 posts I will be posting an index for your ease and will pin it to the top. If you have any questions please feel free to post them below in the comments section.
15.01.2022 I am an Advanced Dorn Method Practitioner and was an Assistant Teacher to the first Dorn Method Classes held in Brisbane. This is a spontaneous video I did in June 2019 when my identical twin Great-Nieces Sophie and Aria came for a visit with their Mum, my Niece Melinda. It shows how to do a leg length check on babies, although I could have done it better had I thought to adjust their booties, so you could see better the discrepancy in the left leg being longer. ... Although the discrepancy was on the left, we show parents to do the correction on both sides as you are not always very competent in doing the leg length correction. In fact, you can go straight to doing the correction on both sides without checking, as you can do no harm. Here are written instructions www.dornmethod.com/about_dorn_children.html Since the root problem appears to be the traumatic events at, before and after birth it is easy to understand that the treatment of children is not only possible with this gentle therapy but indeed necessary. Children often lack the feeling for their body, different long legs or other imbalances in their structural system and they do not necessarily express these problems with pain because they are still more flexible and relaxed than adults and their energy flows more freely. However problems are often noticeable in their behaviour like frequent crying, restlessness or the opposite and sleeping problems. Symptoms like Skin diseases and Inflammations, Breathing problems, Hyperactivity or frequent colds may be due to Misalignments and Blockages in the Spinal Column. ....... When Kids do not like to walk, prefer to sit or want to be carried around, get tired easily or appear to have a limited range of movement and flexibility then this could be signs of misalignments in the pelvis and spine. Especially after a complicated birth, the often caused subluxations in the cervical spine and the pelvis and hips, must be corrected as soon as possible. Luckily we often do not need to correct the whole spine in very young children up to school age because they are still very self-adjustable and flexible at that age but the hips, cervical spine and sacrum need attention also in these kids. ...... The causes are as mentioned often at birth and directly after due to a difficult and traumatic birth experience, unfavourable lifting of the baby at the legs, carrying and moving the baby, one-sided movements, falls and others. This video is posted with consent of the twins Mum who is my Niece.
15.01.2022 TMJ 40: Pain had a message song. Happy Friday. I consider pain to be simply a call to action. As this song says Pain has a message for me. If you are ignoring your pain, then I can assure you, even if the pain has left you for now, the brain has simply found a way for the body to compensate and cope for now. ... Eventually all those internal coping mechanisms build up and one day out of nowhere you are hit with massive pain and you are scratching your head trying to associate this seemingly new pain with something you’ve done now. How is it possible you’ve gone from no pain to intense pain? As John said in a recent post of mine, the saying goes It’s the last straw that broke the camel’s back. With TMJD there’s so many complex layers to work through. But work through them we must. There is light at the end of the tunnel. No one needs to suffer in pain. But it will require action from you and sometimes it’s daily action for months. How dedicated are you to your own healing and well-being? Are you going to reach out or suffer until you bury this first symptom (straw)? And this relates to you even if you don’t have TMJD. Don’t ignore your first symptom. There is a cause and it needs to be found. There is always a solution you just need to find it. I went from a body of pain to a body free of pain and that’s thanks to the journey I took with Bowen Therapy. I shall be forever grateful
15.01.2022 TMJ 6: As promised, here is the first neuromuscular re-education exercise to retrain your tongue to hold its correct position (see previous post). Tongue clucking to retrain your tongue. Clucking restores the resting position of the mandible and repositions your tongue into its correct position. When your tongue is in its correct position on the roof of your mouth you have a harder time clenching your teeth together and thats what we want. We want you to have an awareness... of clenching so that you can stop it. Cluck so often that you become irritating to everyone around you. Clucking will retrain your tongue to be in its rightful position. This will not happen over night. Regular daily practice for as long as it takes will be required. Persistence and consistency is key. More helpful tips coming tomorrow. Let me know what you notice overnight. https://youtu.be/ntoOV54DTQc The reason we want our tongues in the right position: 1. Correct tongue position positions our teeth into their correct place. Incorrect tongue placement can negatively affect the space in which our teeth grow. 2. Keeps our palate wide. The tongue flat forces the teeth out giving room for the tongue to rest comfortably. Pushing onto our teeth can narrow our palate. A narrow palate can affect our airway and breathing and lesson the room for our tongue. 3. Correct tongue placement affects our facial symmetry and design. A narrow palate can reduce the amount of support for your jaw and cheekbones. As a result, your chin and cheekbones may become less prominent over time. 4. Pushing onto the front of your teeth can cause an open bite. This is caused by constant pressure on the back of your front teeth by your tongue. 5. Poor tongue posture can also lead to problems including speech impediments, snoring and sleep apnea, tooth grinding, tongue thrusting, and mouth breathing. (Ill post about these in other posts). https://www.healthline.com/health/tongue-posture#summary
15.01.2022 I often talk to my female patients about their handbags and how they should consider changing to a backpack like I do or carry it across your body if you can. And for my male patients I talk about not driving or sitting anywhere with their wallets in their back pockets (as it misaligns their pelvis causing all sorts of related pain). Heres a good article for women or men with man bags.

13.01.2022 TMJ 58: Snapping Scapula Syndrome I am currently treating two TMJD patients atm who have Snapping Scapula Syndrome. It can be with or without pain. I’ve found sometimes this can be resolved with what I do and other times it does not. I always tell my patients I’ll do my part but you need to do your part. Every one of my patients gets an at home exercise of some kind to do from the very first treatment. That’s what helps them heal quickly. ... So for those of you with Snapping Scapula Syndrome try this and let me know if you feel any improvement. He explains all about it and shows the exercise at 2:42. https://youtu.be/zsmeXwHu6W0 For those wondering what it is check here https://youtu.be/wTMUqCj5ETg For those wanting to assess for it (although I’ve never had to - either the patient will tell me about it and show me or I’ll be moving their arm and it will pop). It also shows an extreme version of the pop. https://youtu.be/BM1EchyDXuU Please let me know below if you have this condition and if you try the Athlean-X exercise does it help you?
13.01.2022 TMJ 42: Posture Continued ....How are your traps affecting your jaw? You need to learn how to relax these and level them out. Please comment below if you feel any of this. A sword piercing through the eye. Massive headaches. Aching jaw. Tingling fingers. Shooting pain down the arm. Uneven shoulders. Weak grip. All of these issues and more are caused by probably the most common compensation of all, the upper trapezius muscle. Overuse of the upper trap muscle results in incre...asing muscle tightness, even at rest. You know you’re just sitting there at rest and you just touch it and it feels tight, hard, concrete like. You don’t have to be a therapist to feel the knots under your fingers. As a result, subtle symptoms will start to occur- neck stiffness, limited range of movement, headaches, or shooting pain down the arm are all signs of an overused upper trap. When the upper trap is excessively tight, it affects so much more. A case study was done to test whether pain in the trapezius causes TMJD Pain by injecting saline into the trapezius which was published in The Journal of Orofacial Pain through Nihon University. The result of this study showed The zones of pain most often mentioned were the posterolateral part of the neck (n = 10), infra-auricular zone (n = 6), retro-auricular zone (n = 5), submandibular zone (n = 4), occipital zone (n = 3), and anterior temple (n = 3). Three of the subjects felt pain in 5 or more zones, and 2 felt no pain at all in the orofacial region. Consequently, pain appeared to spread frequently into the region of the temporomandibular joint. https://www.researchgate.net//7845370_Pain_patterns_and_ma From my experience and knowledge of other TMJD sufferers, I know these pain points are often felt. And so I believe treating the traps is an important element when treating TMJD sufferers. I’ve created a way to treat and self treat the traps which immediately brings relief especially to a limited range of motion of the neck. If you are a patient of mine I will have shown you this. For your information, there are two types of trigger points: active and latent. Active trigger points hurt when you move. Latent trigger points only hurt when someone applies pressure along the raised part of the muscle. When I do this work and teach you how to do it to yourself, you are going to feel these latent trigger points (they hurt but must be released).
13.01.2022 TMJ 18: Buteyko Breathing - The Relationship Between Breathing and Anxiety. Many people with TMJD will have anxiety. This condition can be really painful and stressful on its own as so few people truly understand the complexity of this joint and how to treat it and its many referred symptoms. Robert Litman in this video says Use your mouth for breathing as often as you use your nose for eating As funny as that sounds, its seriously important. We need to keep our mout...hs shut when not speaking or eating or being intimate. In other videos of his he says we should never yawn with our mouths open. So start practising that. In these times with Covid19 if you are walking past or are around sick people keep your mouth closed. Its open mouths that take in germs not noses. Interesting The first breathing exercise starts at 8:00 for unblocking your nose, then at 16:00 watch for how you breathe; chest or belly, and at 18:30 he talks about anxiety and breath. At 19:50 he shows how to best facilitate easier breathing. At 26:26 he shows an 81 second breathing exercise for any time you have anxiety or panic attacks. https://youtu.be/WhEEtWNbLJ4 Tomorrow Ill share how best to teach a child. Oftentimes TMJD issues start in childhood but we dont find out about it until we are in a bad state of pain in adulthood. If we learn what to look out for and how to remedy it, then we can protect our children and the adults of the future. Teach them young.
13.01.2022 TMJ 43: Posture Correction using the Dorn Method - How to Get Your Pelvis into Symmetry (I’m resharing this video from June 2020 to bring this into this series for easy finding). Is one hip higher than the other? Are the dimples in your sacrum (PSIS) level? ... If you can’t get to see an Applied Myoskeletal Therapist, then the Dorn Method is a great tool for realigning the pelvis and taking away SIJ or bulging disc pain. Prior to learning Applied Myoskeletal Therapy (AMT), I would do this whenever I felt that twinge where I thought oh no, my back is going to go. I would also do this when my back had gone and I was in excruciating pain. That doesn’t happen to me any more (the back going into spasm) since I trained in AMT and taught myself to self assess and correct keeping my body in symmetry (perfect alignment). I self assess daily. This Dorn Method self help correction is an amazing tool / life skill free for you. Please let me know below if you try this and it helps. I’m not a lover of doing videos of myself and it will take a lot of encouragement from you for me to want to do any more. Just saying ...

12.01.2022 TMJ 47: The jaw muscles are a core part of the Deep Front Line. This is why you can feel pain elsewhere in the body. Your tongue is connected to your feet! Thanks goes to my colleague Grace Billing from Bowen Therapy with Grace who shared a post from the Bowen Association of Australia who shared this video showing an actual cadaver showing our deep front line. 12.01.2022 Im noticing a lot of poor posture related problems with people, largely caused from working from home with poor ergonomics. Wanted to share this video of exercises I like to share with my patients for correcting forward head position. It is so important to get those ears back in alignment with your shoulders. Please check it out and do those chin ticks as often as possible. https://youtu.be/6C-wfV27bzI
12.01.2022 Dorn Method Self Help Exercise for the Sacrum. This exercise helps realign and correct the pelvis. In the Dorn Method we use resistance against movement as a distraction method. Rather than forcefully trying to move vertebras or joints back into place, the Dorn technique is used to cleverly distract muscles whilst a correction is being made. Distraction simply means shifting or moving your attention away. It does not mean that the pain is no longer there. Although this i...s very good for reducing pain. It just means that you use your brain to focus your attention onto something else. So the brain will put your pain in the background and focus instead on the movement of your leg swinging. During this distraction movement your muscles are in a more relaxed state, and it is then easier to realign vertebras or joints without having to overcome too much muscle resistance. The dynamic movement of your leg swinging, and the resistance made by your fist enables the mechanical principles of counter pressure and levering forces to come into play. I tell my patients, the hand they hold is the leg they swing. Then we place our fist on the other side of the stable sacrum and we push in on the backward swing. We use our flat fist when working across and down the sacrum but we use our first index knuckle when working on the glutes against your sacrum edge. Also please walk a little after doing the exercise as you should feel some improvement in the way you feel. These can be done several times a day. The Dorn Method is a wholistic manual therapy used to correct misalignments in the spinal column and other joints. It can be applied for sciatica, back pain, scoliosis etc. It is a prevention and maintenance self help therapy. It is a true healing method as we freely provide our patients with a safe, effective therapy that they can do on themselves as patient after care in the form of these kinds of self help exercises. Information can be freely found on the internet. Remember that the human body was made to move and whenever we stop moving for any length of time, it can play havoc on many of the bodys basic functions such as circulation, sleep, metabolism, digestion, elimination and of course, joint mobility. So it is important that we get you out of pain as quickly as possible so you can keep moving. In my opinion, any movement is better than no movement. As an Advanced Dorn Method Practitioner I teach all my patients how to effectively treat themselves at home. At any time, please call or text me. If this causes you more pain, please stop immediately and contact me. As always, please call a Bowen Therapist, an Applied Myoskeletal Therapist or a Dorn Method Practitioner. http://www.dorn-method.com/dornmethod_international_practit https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wgficBISD9Q&t=325s
12.01.2022 TMJ 21: TMJD Symptoms - What symptoms do you have? TMJ Dysfunction or TMJ Disorder is a multifactorial condition making it very complex for Therapists and Dental Clinicians to treat as the symptoms are many and can affect the whole body. I, however, am trained to assess the whole body to determine what is actually causing your symptoms. I can assess, correct and educate you. And in regards to your TMJ I can assess and place your jaw into its optimal functional position of ...Continue reading
10.01.2022 TMJ 7: Do you have clicking in your jaw? You may be surprised to learn the position of your tongue has some role to play in this problem of your TMJD. Heres another neuromuscular re-education to help with tongue position and eventually clicking in the jaw. Stay with me because this alone wont do it. I would like for you to take note of the position of your tongue when you say the sounds Ng as in sing and Ah as in car. ... The correct position is for the tip of your tongue to be touching the bottom of your front teeth. Is yours? Or is it free flowing not touching anything? So for this exercise you are to continually say ng followed by ah continually for a minute or so once or twice a day. So when repeating "ng- ah" over and over again, for a minute or so, make sure your jaw stays relaxed, the tip of your tongue is glued to your lower front teeth, and that the back of your tongue moves with each syllable. You can also take note that when you make the Ng sound you will exhale through your nose. Place your hand in front of your nose and feel the air escape. As TMJD sufferers we need to encourage and teach ourselves to be nasal breathers. Now for those of you who have clicking in the jaw, before you begin, place both hands on your TMJ and open and close your mouth noting what you feel and/or hear on opening, mid opening and full opening, then closing. Then do the same thing whilst just holding your left TMJ and notice what you feel and/or hear. Then do the same thing again whilst just holding your right TMJ and notice what you feel and/or hear. Take note of which side of the jaw you can actually feel and/or hear the clicking when holding just one hand. Ill be speaking more about clicking in later posts. Now position the tip of your tongue at the base of your lower teeth, and say the Ng-Ah sounds over and over making sure you are moving your jaw in a relaxed state and the tongue moves where its meant to be whilst keeping the tip at the base. Now place your hand on the side of your face where you felt the clicking before. If doing it correctly you will not feel that click anymore. Let me know in the comments below what you discovered. More posts to come. 09.01.2022 Full Disclosure: I hurt my back training with my PT. I did a reverse plank one arm pull up which is the equivalent of putting 60kgs of pressure on my degenerative spine. Not smart I know. No amount of symmetry checking and core holding was going to prevent this injury. Hindsight is a beautiful thing. Hence why you have not seen many posts from me. I've been getting treatment and resting as much as possible referring all my patients on. Posts will start up again next week. Will I go back to my PT? Yes. Will I do that exercise again any time in the future? No. I am learning a lot through this experience. See you on the other side.
09.01.2022 TMJ 1: How OldPain2Go got rid of my TMJ ear ache. I got no sleep last night. Fortunately, I had today scheduled off as I have a major exam tonight. I wasnt able to sleep and I havent been able to study because Ive been in extreme pain with my TMJ Disorder. Ive had an intense continual earache; so bad it has brought me to tears. I knew this was emotional. I had done nothing physical to cause me this pain or to put my jaw out. I treated myself anyway both yesterday ...and again today. I couldnt afford to wait the day or two it takes normally to resolve. I need to be pain free so I can do this oral exam tonight. But it wasnt lifting. Every minute another sharp pain stabbed me. I rang three therapists including a maxillofacial physiotherapist but couldnt get in with a time that was suitable today. I was even downing strong drugs which werent even touching it. Im talking intense level 10 pain causing real tears. I even purchased an online product with TMJ exercises thinking maybe learning some new jaw exercises would help. This is not money wasted IMO. But these require daily usage over weeks. This wasnt going to get me pain free anytime soon. So, I sat down and did an OldPain2Go session on myself. I didnt think I could do it and I certainly wasnt sure if it was going to work, but I so wanted it to work. My clarity of intent was high. I sat still with my eyes closed for a good long while as I allowed all of that pain, inflammation and tension to leave my body. I did this at 1pm. Its now been over an hour and I havent had one shot of pain since. I am so grateful to Steven Blake mba for teaching me this psychotherapy. This has encouraged me so much to use this more on patients now as I seem to be getting a lot of complex conditions coming into my clinic at the moment. We wont need for them to suffer so long having to keep continually coming back. Such sweet blessings. The power of the mind. I hope people will be very open to this. Edit: I wrote above that I had done nothing physical to put my TMJ out and that I thought it was emotional but I didnt put two and two together at the time and I forgot when I wrote this that I had been to the dentist on the 25th of June for two fillings (one a replacement) and had my mouth pulled open and shut for an hour. So this pain was definitely physical and my stress just brought light to it.
08.01.2022 TMJ 13: The digastric muscles involvement in clicking when chewing. The posterior belly of the digastric muscle attaches to the temporal bone at the mastoid process. If when chewing and you have this clicking, hold this point, right under the ear, next to your mandible and watch the clicking stop. If this works for you, then you may benefit from releasing this muscle. Watch this video and try and adapt it so you can do it to yourself. https://youtu.be/lID9tbptEic

05.01.2022 TMJ 14: Take 3. Geez. I clearly do not like videos of myself! I only just realised that I posted a photo only and not my video. I really wish someone would have woken me up and told me Here goes for my third attempt. Please refer to my previous post with all the writing about the digastric muscle and how I came about creating this release for the posterior digastric muscle to alleviate clicking when chewing. Please let me know if you try this and it helps you by commen...ting below. Your comments and likes help this post be seen. There are too many people in the world suffering with TMJD and forking out thousands of dollars trying to get others to help them without success. 05.01.2022 Solution for allergies using acupressure: Ive been wanting to share this for a little while and today I received a message through this page asking if Bowen Therapy can help with allergies, so it was my grateful reminder. When I did the thorough clean up of my clinic for the return of patients after our Covid19 lockdown, it was great going through my bookcase and filing cabinet finding valuable old information like this, it was like finding gold. ... I used to be a terrible allergy sufferer from 20-27yo, so bad that I felt like I was sick every day. That is, until I went through the desensitisation process of having injections. That changed my life. Now I have a daughter who suffers with the same debilitating allergies, but who has a needle phobia so cannot at this stage do the needle desensitisation. Recently, with the change in cold weather and strong winds my nose began to drip and wouldnt stop. Allergy sufferers know what I mean. Its horrible and is what my daughter suffers with most days. I have found our Bowen moves work well for sinus pain caused by allergies but has not, for me, stopped the dripping or when it blocks. These acupressure points though worked to stop the dripping in its tracks each time. I held each point with my index and middle fingers starting on the left at BL-4 and held it firmly for 15 seconds. So I held all 5 points firmly for 15 seconds on the left and then repeated on the right. For Yintang I held both index and middle finger in between the eyebrows at the third eye point both times (for left and right). Here are the 5 acupressure points: BL-4 Bladder 4 is on the top of the front of the head, half a thumb width inside the hairline, and one and a half thumb widths lateral to the midline. Yintang is midway between the medial (inner) ends of the two eyebrows. Bitong is an extra point located on the side of the nose at the bottom of the nasal cartlage. LI-20 Large Intestine 20 is level with the bottom corner of the nose, in the naso-labial groove (the crease in the face from above the corner of the nose towards the corner of the mouth). LI-19 Large Intestine 19 is under the bottom corner of the nose, one third of the way down the upper lip. Please let me know here in the comments if it works for you. I expect it will. #Allergies #Allergyrelief #rhinitis #rhinitisrelief #acupressure #stopnosedripping #nosedripping

04.01.2022 TMJ 8: Another exercise to stop clicking. This definitely helps me. It doesnt keep it at bay immediately or long term yet. Ive been doing it as prescribed since the 27th of June, 2020 and several times daily since the second week. But I have definitely noticed a significant improvement. This exercise I found through a TMJ/TMD Discussion group shared by Linda Patterson. Be sure to click on the photo to see all the details of this exercise. Credit goes to https://www.ouh.n...hs.uk/patient-gui/leaflets//12128Ptmj.pdf On the 25th of June, 2020 I had two fillings done. I had my mouth opening and closing for an hour. It was very uncomfortable and quite distressing as I could feel the extreme stress being placed on my TMJ and facial muscles. Although my dentist was very understanding and he too felt stressed by the experience, when it was done, I could not open my mouth wider than 10mm. Eating dinner was very difficult. Fortunately, the next day I had a treatment booked for my TMJ work with a colleague. The treatment hurt a lot but it freed me. But sadly this dental work weakened my TMJ and surrounding muscles. As you know 4 weeks later I suffered extreme ear pain that stabbed me every minute for hours. Once I healed myself of the ear pain, I then was left with a residual light head ache that just would not go away. It lasted weeks. I could normally get this resolved myself but it wasnt lifting. Thats when I delved into what is really going on here. What I am missing? What do I still need to learn? The symptoms of every TMJD sufferer can be quite different. A really detailed and individual assessment of each case needs to be taken into consideration. I could write about TMJD all year and maybe still not cover every aspect required for every person. I hope this one helps you and would be keen to know if anyone tries it and you feel the improvement as I have.

03.01.2022 TMJ 9: Another one for clicking. Remember when at rest our teeth should not be touching ever. A lot of people tend to bite their jaw / teeth together tight (clenching) either consciously or unconsciously. This is not me. Is it you? For this exercise, again first take your hand/s and place them onto your problem side of your TMJ. Both for both sides or one hand only for left or right. Feel for that click. This is to bring conscious awareness to your click. Open and close your ...mouth as you would normally and feel that click. This exercise will loosen up tightened muscles from clenching and help with your click. Put your upper and lower molars together, very lightly. Do they touch at the same time? Now open your mouth very slowly as wide as you can without stretching! When you do this, focus on your molars. Visualise them coming apart and then closing and coming down again together slowly and perfectly in alignment to touch again. Think of your mouth opening perfectly like a hinge on a door. All while having your hand on your TMJ so that you can feel how the click improves or stops. If it continues clicking, do it in front of a mirror to try and make sure your mouth is not deviating. Go slowly and purposefully while concentrating on those back molars. If done correctly you will not feel the click when you are doing it. Do this 10-20 times twice daily. Do not overdo it. From then on be mindful of how you open your mouth. Until we relax and retrain our muscle memory we need to take things slowly and cautiously. But with time and persistence improvements will come. 02.01.2022 TMJ 57: Ron Phelan’s 2021 Cranial Considerations - TMJ Course, Gold Coast To all my followers who are Therapists or Dentists here, my Bowen Therapy Instructor Ron Phelan will be running two of his courses on the Gold Coast, Qld over a four day weekend most likely on the 1st to the 4th of October 2021. The first two days will be his Cranial Considerations - TMJ course which dentists can also attend. I highly recommend you attend this as there are so many sufferers, and align...ing the jaw can correct the whole body and resolve issues relating to the eyes, C1/2 and other long standing neck and back issues. The last two days will be his Hormonal Bowen Therapy Course. I had wanted to do this in May last year but Covid canceled it. I also highly recommend this course having been on the receiving end of a treatment that resolved my hot flushes I was suffering with daily for three months in 4 x 5 minute weekly treatments. It is absolutely amazing. I believe every peri-menopausal woman and girl suffering with period problems should be on the receiving end of this treatment. There are many other issues we are taught in this course that helps with infertility and erectile issues. Please let me know if you will be interested in attending one or both of these courses so I can help get the information to you. I look forward to seeing your name in the comments section.
02.01.2022 Just wanted to share a comment from a follower Yara who has been freed from TMJD pain by using the exercises in the videos in my post TMJ 44. If you haven’t tried them yet or are getting lost in the index, this is a good place to start.
01.01.2022 TMJ 41: Importance of Posture - How to fix forward head position. I’ve shared these exercises before back in June but I wanted to share it here in this TMJ series to make it easier to find. This is how I resolved my forward head position. The position of your head should be so that your ears are in alignment with the middle of your shoulders / traps. If they are not, you need to work at re-educating yourself to bring your head back. ... One rule of thumb is that for every inch that the head is held forward in poor posture, an additional 10 pounds or 4.536kgs of weight is felt on the cervical spine. So if the average head weighs between 10 and 12 pounds (or 4.536kgs and 5.4431kgs), just 1 or 2 inches of forward head posture can double or triple the load on the cervical spine. Some muscles in the neck and upper back must continually overwork to counterbalance the pull of gravity on the forward head. As a result, muscles become more susceptible to painful strains and spasms. Forward head posture is often accompanied by forward shoulders and a rounded upper back, which can lead to more pain in the neck, upper back, and/or shoulders. (Search out my posts to resolve these other issues). Some muscles in the neck, upper back, shoulders, and chest can become shortened and tight, whereas others can become elongated and weak. Extra stress on the cervical spine’s discs, facet joints, and vertebrae may increase the risk for or worsen degenerative spine issues, such as cervical degenerative disc disease and cervical osteoarthritis. As someone who has cervical degenerative disc disease, I fortunately no longer have any pain, (and when it does come back due to sleeping poorly or something, I know what to do) thanks to the benefits of correcting my posture and keeping myself in symmetry and the self help skills I created. But, when I turn my head left and right I hear what my sister describes as popping candy. This sound is crepitus. Crepitus or crepitation is the noise that may be heard during joint movements, such as a cracking, popping, snapping, or grinding. Some of you will have this in your TMJ itself. These sounds and sensations can occur in the neck as well. Please note, while treatments may help to control pain and swelling remember that crepitus may not go away. And in my case has never gone away (but it does not disturb me). Solution: I did these exercises to correct my forward head posture and successfully position my head in its correct place. Watch this YouTube video and create a daily practise. As I always say, Consistency is key when it comes to healing. https://youtu.be/6C-wfV27bzI https://www.spine-health.com//how-poor-posture-causes-neck
